Taliban Demand End To Censorship

During their time in power, they banned music, kite-flying and rights for women. Now they want freedom of speech...

They outlawed music, television and education for girls during their rule of Afghanistan, but the Taliban are now backing freedom of speech - condemning a government ban on live broadcasts of their attacks.

The Western-backed government has banned live coverage of militant assaults in a bid to prevent the Taliban exploiting television news to send messages to their operatives.

As the measure - which applies to domestic and international media - was criticised by journalists and rights groups, the Taliban joined the fray, calling it an attack on free speech.

“This totally undermines freedom of the press and expression and cannot be justified by any means,” Taliban spokesman Yousuf Ahmadi said.

As with groups in countries like the UK, they are trying to take advantage of liberty in order to fight liberty.

Putting their own agenda aside, do they have a point? I'm not sure, if such censorship is genuinely intended for the good of the people then is it justified?

The Mumbai controller watched the attacks on live television, directing his terrorists by phone from Pakistan.

India finally got wind of this and shut off live television.

I would certainly believe that general security was enough reason to exercise censorship of news accounts going live.

Sorry.

I missed that it is live broadcasts that are banned, which puts it into a whole different light of course.

They are <deleted> hypocrites. Surprise, surprise. :)

If we ban their right to free speech & live broadcasts then the terrorists have already won!!! :)

Sarcasm of course.

I agree with chuckd, "....I would certainly believe that general security was enough reason to exercise censorship of news accounts going live."

It's nothing new. Loose lips sink ships. Freeedoms are curtailed in every conflict.

It is hypocritical, but it's nothing to do with hypocrisy, per se, it's all about trying to get a stategic advantage....anyone would do the same.
