Chile, Three Days Later

Sad pictures, indeed.

It does beg the question why the Chilean President said they needed no help from outside sources.

Dont know? Leary? I guess depends on their history with outside forces/sources

I know I was once in a 7 pointer that lasted almost a whole minute....50 some odd seconds.

We were glad for the help given.

Earthquakes...big ones...with duration are something I would not wish on anyone.

But having ridden it & seen it I must say it is an incredible display of power. Things go liquid looking.

Also very odd to see a hump roll across the landscape like a wave. Sometimes asphalt cracks & sometimes it does not.

Very odd/incredible/humbling experience.

She was wrong, no doubt, but to be fair, at first she didn't say they "didn't need help". She said, "lets assess the situation first", and first accounts were that the death toll and destruction was less than what in reality there is.

That is awful, we can only hope that life can begin to return to some degree of normality for them as soon as possible. I was in Phuket for the tsunami and saw first hand how powerful and destructive these things can be, it really is quite awe inspiring and of course terrifying.

The main difference being though that on the first opportunity I was on a plane heading back yo my intact home and life in elsewhere whereas the same cannot be said for these people.

"Four hours after the earthquake, when the death count was still low, Chilean president Michelle Bachelet provided a press conference in which she informed the population of the situation and stated that Chile did not yet need international aid.[48] "

"yet"

Her representative, her foreigin minister, then specifically announced, "Despite officials saying up to 1.5 million homes could be affected, Chile's Foreign Minister Mariano Fernandez asked countries that offered aid to hold off until authorities could assess the emergency needs....."

Old news, I'm not going to search for major network releases from a week ago. I posted what I remembered seeing on tv.

As did I!

My post was made based on what SHE said, not her Foreign Minister.
