Up And Down Load Speeds.

Featured Replies

I saw the Speed Test thingie and gave it a bash.

Is this good?

Tis genuine, no fixing.

What is "Latency"?

Download Speed: 1514 kbps (189.3 KB/sec transfer rate)

Upload Speed: 327 kbps (40.9 KB/sec transfer rate)

Latency: 541 ms

It's good Pete. I'm on a 1500kbps ADSL connection and the best I can do (with both Singapore and Bangkok) is only equivalent to a poor 512k connection:

Download Speed: 329 kbps (41.1 KB/sec transfer rate)

Upload Speed: 176 kbps (22 KB/sec transfer rate)

Latency: 494 ms

I have to say, though, that I generally get speeds closer to yours (and get far better results with a local speed test)- so I put my results down to traffic at the time. Are you using ADSL2? What are your local (NZ) speed test reults like?

This is my ISP. XTRA at Telecom.

Results

Below is the data used to calculate your download speed:

  • Download time: 1.217 seconds
  • Size of file: 520 Kilobytes
  • Estimated line speed: 3486.6 (kilobits/second)
  • Estimated line speed: 427.3 (kilobytes/second)

Whateva that means.

Yes, more than twice the speed of mine on a good day (mine's supposed to be 1500 kbps). Good stuff!

Download Speed: 1751 kbps (218.9 KB/sec transfer rate)

Upload Speed: 345 kbps (43.1 KB/sec transfer rate)

Latency: 307 ms

The speed test is not accurate. The best way to check you download speed is to download something that you know the size of and measure how long it takes, it tells you as it downlaods and finally at the end. You can then delete the item so no harm done.

Yeah, that is what my test was, a specific file size.

Time of the day, and the day of the week could make a difference.

I am happy, pages come up almost instantly.

Test done by my ISP more or less confirmed the TV test.

Yes, it seems I may be having line problems. D/L speeds currently limping along at around 40kps as against a normal speed of c165. Last time this happened, I notified my ISP, to which I was advised, 'Oh yes, we'll look into it, but if it turns out that the problem is at your end, we'll be billing you $120'. Fortunately, the problem was not at my end. (Perhaps I should have billed them $120 for the inconvenience of a problem that had nothing to do with my end?) Still, it will make the tyre kickers think twice about opportunistic service calls, I suppose.

Read this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Latency_(engineering)

Then this one: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of...y_and_bandwidth

If you eyes have not glazed over there are many more links to follow to understand why FTL data connections are a few years away as yet.

Bear in mind that the 3.5 inch 'floppy' discs of yester-year were designed to fit in a man's shirt pocket and that was the best data transmission available at the time.

Today:

Download Speed: 1310 kbps (163.8 KB/sec transfer rate)

Upload Speed: 172 kbps (21.5 KB/sec transfer rate)

Latency: 509 ms

So my line's improved - and what a difference it makes.
