Actually, I think the sex of a person accused of a crime is perfectly relevant in a news report. Transsexual isn't male or female; it is something else. Sure many people will have negative feelings about minorities like this, but it is a relevant fact in the news sorry. For any people that don't know, a transsexual can be gay, straight, bi or whatever, the term is about gender identity rather than orientation.

Just wonder if such person will be segregated as a male or female, would be interesting if they were "Banged Up" in a male cell, that would be doing "Hard Time". :)

Fair question. Totally off topic really, but the accounts I have read of Thai prison life (though they are hellholes for the most part of course) rape isn't mentioned much as part of it. In these reports consensual sex is mentioned, but not much about rape.

Yes sexual orientation is one thing, but a transsexual is a man who has either naturally or artificially female characteristics so the sex of the person is male. There is not a third gender and so the fact that the criminal has, for whatever reason, declared himself a transexual is irrelevant.

You don't even have the definition of transsexual correct. Try again maybe?

It's descriptive. You could leave it out but you know more about the story if you leave it in. Frankly, I think it is terminally PC to be offended by the mere mention of an important part of this person's identity.

I agree with Jingthing.

In my former country, the journalists were under pressure not to reveal details about the criminals' identities, systematically taking out any reference to origins or race out of the news, and even names when they were a giveaway.

Quite disgusting practice, which is designed to hide from the public that in my former country 50% of crimes are committed by (north-)African immigrants and their children.

I didn't find it offensive, just irrelevant.
