Buri Ram hit by summer storm

By The Nation

BURI RAM: -- A storm yesterday swept through Satuek district in Buri Ram, damaging 140 homes and flattening more than 10 rai of rubber trees, but causing no casualties.

Provincial authorities are considering calling it a disaster in order to qualify for relief funds from the central government.

Ten houses were completely blown away when the storm swept through six villages in tambon Nikhom. Property damage was put at Bt1 million and relief is being given to the occupants of the destroyed houses.

Local administrative officials have provided initial relief to those affected, and more aid is being sought from the central government as funds currently available were not sufficient, local officials said.

More than 400 homes had been damaged by seasonal storms since the hot season began in mid-March. Further damage was also reported in Laharn Sai, Nang Rong and Muang districts in the northeastern province.

Amazing how localised the weather can be here, I'm around 20km from Lahan Sai as the crow flies and we haven't had a drop of rain for over a week, and the wind hasn't been strong enough to bend grass, perhaps it's our turn next.

I suppose the cost is a typo.

Glad everyone survived the storm.

Yes, I would think the cost would be much more then 1million.

Quite amazing. I live on the 218 road, main drag from Buriram to Nang Rong. Not too far from the 226 going to lamplaimat. Bearing in mind that Satuek is north and Nang Rong/Lahansai are south I live right in the middle. We too have had no rain.

However did have a bit of a breeze the other day. I and my wife watched a tornado pass within 100 meters of our house. It was strong enough that it was pulling branched off coconut trees. Just as it went passed looking like it was coming back it blew itself out.

A bit cloose for comfort.

Never in the 12 years I have been here have I seen weather patterns like we've had recently here in Issan.

Fingers crossed it keeps missing us.
