Seminar on reviving tourism in Phuket

BANGKOK: -- Thailand’s provincial authorities across the country plan to hold a seminar in the country's southern resort island of Phuket to discuss ways to boost tourist business on the island resort.

More than 800 provincial officials from all over the country are expected to attend the three-day seminar scheduled to be held in August, the chairman of the Phuket administrative authority, Anchalee Vanich Thepabutr, told TNA on Saturday.

The seminar is being arranged after hotel room bookings in Phuket between June and July dwindled to less than 10 percent, as tourists opted to travel elsewhere after the island resort was devastated by the last December tsunami, she said.

The tourist industry in Phuket is now in crisis and it is necessary to find ways to revive business.

The forthcoming seminar is expected to help improve business on the island, Mrs. Anchalee said.
