June 6, 201015 yr A week or two ago I sent a link via PM to another forum member who I’ve known since I joined ThaiVisa and have an enormous amount of respect for. It was a fairly innocuous thing unrelated to this topic about his country of origin and a sporting event and last night I got a reply thanking me for it. He said he had been tardy in replying because he had got married. This shook me up a bit; not because he had got married but as a very popular member of our local sub-forum he never informed us of the upcoming nuptials so we could have congratulated him and offered helpful advice for his wedding night. He went on to clarify this by saying that he was thinking of giving the forum away because he was sick of the rude replies he was getting to his lengthy, but interesting and well illustrated, posts on local events and history. Horrified, I fired off a reply begging him to reconsider, then, after some thought, sent a message to the forum moderator letting him know of the situation. I’ve just read his reply, and have been informed that I’m in no position to complain as I’m the leading transgressor in the matter. Well, I was the only one he mentioned. This is the second rap on the knuckles I’ve received in a matter of days, a seemingly harmless series of posts about my ex wife’s virtue, or lack thereof, offended another moderator that I have a lot of time for. Now I make no excuses here, the deeds are done, carved in stone so as to speak, but I seem to be finding it easier to be offensive with trying to do so. On the rare occasions I do try to be rude I consider I leave no doubt in the matter, the gunfighter avatar isn’t just for show, but I get into more trouble for the off the cuff one or two liners. So how carefully should we read each thread before we reply? Should every remote possibility of offending someone… anyone? … be considered carefully? Obviously offending some people should be avoided more than others, common sense dictates that. Maybe I should consider retiring my avatar. And another thing. I called into see a long established member and prolific poster the other day, I see him a couple of times a year when I’m in his home city, and he was sitting behind his keyboard. The first thing he said to me was… “Have you noticed the report button doesn’t work on ThaiVisa unless you’re logged on?” He was asking the wrong guy, on the very rare occasions I use it it’s usually to suggest a topic be moved to a more appropriate forum. Like a visa inquiry that was getting no response in a local sub-forum. I was curious how many members would consider the report button to be a vital part of the day’s posting. Are we a forum of “reporters”?
June 6, 201015 yr I've only once seen you be blatantly rude, and that was to someone that I think even the mods would have sworn at if they could have. I like your subtle and not so subtle jibes that are generally quite witty and deserved. I am sure that, with your wise outlook on life, you can forgive the occassional unwarranted wrist slap from a mod....the mods are only human too. PS....I have used the report button a few times; when a post has given me concern that the website may be in danger of official umbrage from the Thai authorities....lesse majeste matters.

June 6, 201015 yr Oi Cowboy, It says more about the intellect and sense of humour ( or lack of ) of the people with have caused this ire, than it does about you mate. Ignore them............ ( edited to add offensive smiley )
June 6, 201015 yr What's this 'Report' button? Does it mean that if some post upsets you, you run crying to some moderator with a "Mummy, Mummy, that nasty boy threw my cap in a puddle" thingy? Bah! This is only an Internet forum - no one is looking for you with a gun. Keep to your style of posting - if some timid souls or PC-nazis don't like it, they can use the 'Ignore' button. I seldom do that even - I have two people on 'Ignore', neither being a prolific poster, but just waste my time when they do post. (Although Internet forums waste my time anyway) (Have to do that so as not to offend those who would otherwise think I'm serious.)(I bloody am!!)
June 6, 201015 yr It says a lot more about the (odd) reader than the author when people take offence at relatively minor things that do not involve themselves. I was just reading a phuket online news site where the editor had addressed several people as Ms, and a serial pest came on to complain bitterly about this, rather than discuss the rather serious subject matter. (this person referred to themselves as Horse Doctor)
June 6, 201015 yr just to clarify my views on that thread you refer to is views expressed by me as a person. has nothing to do with my moderator status. and as said there, I AM quite the prude. which means at least in my book, what happens between 2 people on an intimate /personal level should be kept that way. but thats just my view. I know lots of people who would discuss those details with others.
June 6, 201015 yr It seems that some people lack any sense of humour except when it suits them. Anyway scead it would be a pity for you to hang up the avatar just because (in the words of another poster here) someone chose to be offended.
June 6, 201015 yr I'd like to see a table of who uses the report button. This would weed out the worst perpetrators. Myself I reckon I've probably used it 3 or 4 times to report . The idea of running to the mods every time someone insults you is ridiculous. Just throw one back at 'em or ignore it. Its up to the mods whether they have crossed the line or whatever. I've only been warned once and for what i thought was an inocuous one liner and by a gooner to boot.... Just to add I think all TEFL teachers are wonderful etc....
June 6, 201015 yr Horse Doctor is now known as Christy Sweet on other forums and is as vindictive and bitchy as ever. So beware!! Now that is one person I would put on life long ignore. Or just blow up into a little piece of dust. The malicious ramblings she comes out with are unbelievable. We can all have off days - but that one seems to have an off life!!

June 6, 201015 yr My view is, if you want to flounce, then flounce and do it quietly. The report button is quite important and I use it regularly, although never, I think because I have been attacked, which also happens frequently

I've used the report button a bit in my time, BUT, as what moss says, not because I'm being attacked but moreso on stuff that shouldnt make the pages fullstop. I've seen some foul stuff reach the pages and its just not appropriate. Recently a knob of a poster sent me offensive PM's because he had been reported several times for saying stuff, a couple of times he was actually attacking me. Anyway, he accused me of hitting the report button, but it wasnt me. Anyway, I basically said to him via PM, "Grow a set Russell".
June 6, 201015 yr My view is, if you want to flounce, then flounce and do it quietly. I'm sorry but I fundamentally disagree with you. If you're going to flounce it ought to be a major production with drama and sequins
June 6, 201015 yr I was always of the opinion that horse doctor was in reality a man. But what do I know. As for scead, no idea what the thread is or what caused the offense but lets face it. You can be an abrasive SOB at times. One of the things I like about you mind.

You can be an abrasive SOB at times. One of the things I like about you mind. No, I think the horse doctor was a woman. I don't find Scea abrasive so much. He usually serves up his shots with a bit of wit and in my book that makes for an entertaining read. Ah, now I'm missing "the gent". As ascerbic a wit as TV ever had. He took no prisoners but always bled his foes out with a jewel encrusted dagger.

I think I've used the Report button a total of 3 times. Twice I reported my own posts because I posted something I wish I had not. Usually only about 50% of the posts I start ever get posted but those two snuck by. Then I reported that guy from a few days ago who was heckling the guy who had his son kidnapped. I thought that was a bit much. Strangely, the mods let those posts stand. edit: Oh, I remeber one more time I used it. I reported that Russel Haintz jerk for always making insinuations about another poster. I think thatt led to him being banned, though he's probably back now under another guise.

I just want to know who reported me so I can sock him on the hooter! Probably I would report racist or blatantly offensive posts but you must be doing a good job neverdie coz I rarely spot them.

June 7, 201015 yr Author My view is, if you want to flounce, then flounce and do it quietly. The OP was about self-moderation, turning the other cheek and using soft words to turn away wrath. The gunfighter avatar would be put to bed and replaced with an "endure like" teddy bear, a symbol of my new niceness.

June 7, 201015 yr Author I'm going to make sbk proud of me. I'll generally avoid General, my presence in Thai News will be news to everybody and I'll stay well outside of Outside the Box. When she writes her tell all book on ThaiVisa she'll use my posts as an example of forum correctness and how points of argument can be made without causing offence.

June 7, 201015 yr Author MiGGy, I'm not ignoring you, I can read your PM through the automatic email alert but cannot access my PMs to reply at the moment. (Nothing to do with the new system I'm sure ). Go ahead with what you want to do, I'll get back to you when things are working properly again.
