Doctor'S Certificate

Featured Replies

Within the Thai context, what exactly is a "doctor's certificate"?

I had a health insurance claim partially refused because I did not have a "doctor's certificate". I had the relevant receipts from the hospital.

Recently I went to a hospital for a dental check-up, nothing more, and one of the questions I was asked was, "Do you have a doctor's certificate?"

Is it a sort of multi-purpose term covering anything written by a doctor?

What it is depends on what it'll be used for. Most are pretty basic. Thai's love paperwork.

Common uses are for WP's, drivers licences, some imm offices still want them for retirement extensions, employers might want them for work absences etc etc.

I don't believe that there is one definition that covers the subject.

There is a standard form that all hospitals and clinics have that basically just says that you were seen by the doctor/dentists on that day and lists our diagnosis. The staff will often, but not always, ask in advance if you need one. I assume this is what your insurance company was asking for. Now what the dental clinic was asking for is harder to figure out. Are you sure they were not asking if you needed a certificate?

There is also another, different, form that hospitals and clinics have that certifies that you are healthy, that's the one used for work permits, drivers license, etc.

Slightly off topic ish...

Last week needed a new doctor certificate to renew my driving licence, went to about 3 doctors in the AM and they were all unavailable until the evening as they worked in the hospital, so decided we would go to the hospital but on the way we saw another. My g'friend went inside whilst I was in the 7-11, - ok no problem can do now 40 Baht. great so I went back in expecting to see the Dr right away, but she takes a look at me and says no can't do Thai people only (in Thai). In the end Mission Hospital did it with about a 5 minute wait for 150 Baht, but it was a real check unlike ones I have had before where they just glance at you and write the certificate.
