According to Wiki about Canadian Gun restrictions:

There are three classes of firearms and firearm licences: non-restricted, restricted and prohibited. Prohibited firearms are not actually prohibited, they simply require a prohibited licence to obtain. New prohibited licences are available only at the discretion of the Chief Firearms Officer of a province or the Federal Government of Canada.

* Non-restricted licences allow a person to own and use most semi-automatic and manual action rifles and shotguns, but no handguns. Rifles and shotguns that do not meet length requirements are classed as restricted. Some rifles and shotguns are classed as restricted by name.

* Restricted licences allow a person to own most handguns and some restricted semi-automatic rifles and shotguns. Handguns with barrels 105 mm or shorter are classed as prohibited. Some handguns are classed as prohibited by name.

* Prohibited licences allow a person to own firearms classified as prohibited, including fully automatic firearms. Generally, these licences are not commonly available and may only be issued by the CFO of a province or the Federal Government. They've made owning guns so difficult in Canada that there has been an 70% decline in legal hunters and shooters, despite the fact our population has doubled in the same time period. As far back as I can remember, handguns have had severe restrictions in Canada. Although you can own a handgun and keep it in your home, it has to be locked up in a safe. And, a special permit is required to take a handgun to and from the shooting range on specific days. Under no circumstances are you allowed to carry a handgun into the bush country for target shooting. Basically, only the army, the police and criminals are allowed to have handguns in Canada. I say criminals are allowed to carry guns because nothing ever happens to them if they get caught using a gun while commiting a crime. The guns get confiscated, but the criminals get a slap on the wrist and told not to do it again before being released into their own custody. The laws haven't prevented one murder and yet we've spent over a billion dollars on registration. If the bad guys want guns they just bring them in from the USA.
