Retirement Change To Non Imm

I am moving to Thailand from US on a retirement visa. If i wish to teach given I find a position can I change the retirement visa to a Non Imm visa without leaving Thailand?

It should be doable at a cost of 2,000 baht. Even if it were not, as in the past, it only takes a trip to Penang or such to obtain one when you have the paperwork. But these days it can be done at immigration without a trip.
