Of Love, War And Oil Spills...

Featured Replies

So many people have been blamed for this oil spill fiasco - BP, Obama, Bush, politicians, big oil, even regular people for just using oil causing the demand for it. There's one culprit that has escaped any blame. Not for the spill itself, but for what the public expects from our leaders and large corporations...

Hollywood. They condition us to think we can do anything - and do it quickly. It took only a few days to send some space shuttles into outer space to land on an asteroid, drill into it, plant a nuclear bomb and save the planet. So how hard could it be to plug a hole just one mile under the sea? There are countless other examples and more being added to our collective consciousness each summer.

In addition to overcoming disaster, they condition us that war can be fought without many if any deaths on our side. In old Hollywood, heroes often died. John Wayne getting shot in the back at the end of Sand of Iwo Jima for one. In the 80's and first half of the 90's almost never saw a hero die. For every Tom Hanks getting killed trying to save Private Ryan, there were a hundred Bruce Willis' walking away from an exploding skyscraper unscathed.

It doesn't end at disaster and war, Hollywood also conditions people to have unrealistic expectations of love. The scene in Ghost with Demi Moore and Patrick Swayze making a clay pot got women swooning. The film didn't show the other 23 hours of the day with Patrick farting, snoring, burping, hanging with his friends or ignoring Demi while the big game was on. We need some more realistic movies to get that divorce rate down. ;)

Once were Warriors Great Movie

I used to live in Otahuhu, a suburb in Auckland where some of this movie takes place. Although fiction, some people in NZ live very similiar lives to this movie.
