Will A Router From Another House Work At My House?

Featured Replies

Hi

Here's the situation. A friend of the wife's wants me to set her laptop up with port forwarding, so obviously need to connect her laptop to the Internet to make sure it's all working correctly.

She is coming round with the laptop sometime in the next few days for me to do this. Last time I did some upgrades for her she brought her router but I could not get it to connect to the Internet on my line but actually didn't try too hard as at that time it wasn't really necessary.

I'm on TOT but her router is set up for a different provider (can't recall which) but should it matter? It's all going down the same phone line so will trying to use a different provider on my line work?

I'm thinking I could just change the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) settings for my router on the laptop then set them back so it will work with her router when she gets home.

Ideas?

I think you need to tell us a little more what the goals of this is.

Oh! I thought it was fairly clear. :(

I want to use her laptop at my house by just plugging in her router (and laptop) to my TOT line without having to reconfigure her router.

Or alternatively:-

Can I just change the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) settings on her laptop so it will work with my router then reset the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) back to what it was so it will work with her router when she get it home.

Have you got a multi port router, why not just plug it into yours.

If she is a customer of True then a few things need to be changed in the settings, cannot remember them but it is only 3. This is if you want to plug her router into your line.

Is your router a wireless one? If so she can connect if her laptop is set for wireless internet, all you need to do is give her the password to log on.

You will have to set it up for your provider/password and then she will have to be able to set it back up for her use. Perhaps you can download the port forwarding information for her specific modem/router and run her through the procedure with a phone call easier? The port forwarding is done in the modem/router (at least in my experience) so using her computer with your router will not help her.

connect her lappy to ur home network, change setting to be DHCP so that her laptop can get tcp/ip info frm ur router. whether u can get her router connect to ur ph line. It depends on the provider's settings

Just click "obtain IP address automatically" and plug in the cable to your router.

What confuses me is "A friend of the wife's wants me to set her laptop up with port forwarding."

As lopburi3 already mentioned, that is something you do on her router if you want to reach her computer from the internet side... or maybe you mean something else?

Maybe you can just ask her to read the WAN IP of the router and if security sucks, which is normally the case, you can log in to the routers admin page from your hope. no legs needed.

Will A Router From Another House Work At My House? Without Reconfiguring the router

The simple answer is No.

The router logon and password is specific to your telehone line.

Thanks everyone

I don’t' have a multipoint router nor is it wireless, even if I did it would not help as has been pointed out her router has to be set for port forwarding.

This is why my original question was if her router would work on my phone line and as "astral" brief and to the point said "no".- shucks!

My other thought was to set her computer up initially using my router but on reflection this would not work as it has to be her router that needs to be set. - double shucks!

Guess I'll just have to give her detailed "Simple Port Forwarding" instructions and hope she can do it herself when she gets home.

I'm going to be installing uTorrent and some other stuff for her as well as doing a general clean up which I can do without Internet connection so she can leave her router at home.

Why don't you take my advice and do it remotely...? Then you can do it properly and she can test it before you give up....

The simple answer is No.

The router logon and password is specific to your telephone line.

Also the VPI and VCI settings are different for different ISPs.
