Thanks MRO; I thought that they we're throwing in a fair bit - was suprised when you said its possible to get the GPS as well. I guess they just mix'n match their freebies while trying to maintian that 70k profit you mention.

(interesting, I was just talking to someone about how much profit they make on a new car - I remember reading Toyota gets 2pc on a car??)

I don't think its worth squabbling too much more. I'd rather have good and reliable customer care and service from here. Thinking I will give it another month as I've got a bit on over the next coupla weeks.

MRO, would you happen to have a link to instructions on installing the WDTV?? ... am looking for a guide for Amnuay.

Also I'm changing the speakers over to Alpine - they sound a lot better in the showroom, but at 6k a pair are they gonna be worth the difference?

And... he reckons I should install a locktech

device ... might be good to have some extra security, but I don't like having to add yet another key to the keyring.

AFAIK, I'm still the only one who's done the full integration install with relocated remote sensor. There's a few guys that have installed media players on the Thai forums, but all have just fitted it under the glovebox - it'll get remote signals there but looks a little bit too "ghetto" for me.

Here's a DIY guide for the USB ports: http://www.pajerosportsociety.com/society/index.php?topic=5423.0

And some pics of other installs:

Alpine are nice kit, but there's a lot of choice when you start paying that kind of money too.. If you're not up for shopping them around some more, make sure you're at least getting a 10% discount off retail and free fitting ;)

As for the lock-tek, it's not the kind of thing I'm at all fussed with. Too much bother on a day-to-day basis, already covered by insurance without it, and useless for thefts where they get hold of your keys anyway. YMMV :D

Thanks for taking the time MRO - that will all prove very helpful - is there any special trick required to getting the WDTV working through the touch screen??

Amnuay has given 500 off the price which includes fitting - but I'm sure he has very high mark-ups - but I don't mind paying a bit extra for their excellent service.

On the locktech I don't think I would end up using it after a while, so I'll probably skip it. But wouldn't mind some sort of extra security for a bit of piece of mind.

And I did see this in my travels today - rear skirt that fills out the back but looks a little too much like a fortuner. (9k BTW) - what do people think of that spoiler?

The WDTV simply plugs into the "TV" input on the screen, but there's no touch support.. all control is remote only. I have been thinking about that for a future project though ;)

You will need the Alpine Ai-Net AUX-in adaptor in order for the audio side of things to work - this cost me 800 Baht for the genuine part.

I've seen a few Pajero's with the Zercon kit now - I'm not a big fan of the front bumper additions with the Fiesta-like chrome trapezoids, but the rest of it looks nice. It's much nicer than the Porsche Cayenne styled kit though (which just doesn't work IMHO), but yeah, it does all start looking a bit "Fortuner" - which may be good, bad or indifferent depending on your POV :D

I'm finally going for a test drive today. Anyone have any tips for negotiating a good deal??

The current promotion is 1.69% interest for 25% down with 48 months repayments, with free 1-year insurance and reversing camera (GT model only). This promotion is meant to end on August 31st, but no doubt it'll continue next month in a slightly revised way..

Standard freebies you can expect are:

  • Rear spoiler for 2WD model (already included on the 4WD)
  • Window tint (make sure you specify the brand you want or you'll end up with the cheapest grade)
  • Weather shields
  • Floor mats
  • Free Tabien Rot (registration / road tax) - this has gone from being a standard inclusion with all cars to being something you have to negotiate into the deal.

Additional freebies you can usually negotiate into the deal (usually only one, but try your luck ;) ):

  • GPS navigation (make sure it's the Alpine PMD-B100E, not the PND-B80E)
  • 5pc Body skirt package (Genuine OEM is worth 28K Baht, aftermarket it can be had for ~8000 Baht)

Also note that even with the low interest campaign in place, interest is still negotiable. Some dealers have gone as alow as 1.1% but 1.35% seems achievable at most dealerships with enough haggling.

Make sure you get one of the nicest accessories - the LED scuff plate. I got more or less every thing there is (except the skirt pack) but the scuff plate with LED is sooo nice!

Well the upgrade to Alpine speakers makes an amazing difference - I'm hearing lots of stuff on the same disc that just wasn't there before. First half of the day I was thinking that I wouldn't need to bother with an amp or sub; but speaking to the guy he reckons he could fit my old kit for 4-5k, all hidden away... its tempting.

I decided not to go for the lock-teck, who needs the bother with another key. I only have the 80pc insurance, so I'm also tempted to do a remote upgrade which will add motion sensor alarm - again 5k.

I was just looking back on another thread where MRO mentioned he got 25k for his 5 wheels. The best I can get is 16k - brand new. At that I'm not gonna bother changing; I'm pretty happy with the look for now.

Going up the Doi I had no problems, but on a windy entrance through a friends MooBaan it was leaning all over the place - I was swaying - is this what people mean by the handling of this car??

I assume you're bumping for comments on this?

I've never felt that the Pajero Sport has any deficiencies with handling at all, and I've punted it around virtually every mountain range in TH, at speed.

First thing I'd recommend is checking your tire pressures (there's a sticker in the driver's door jamb with the recommended values) - Thai's have a bad habit of over-filling car tires because unlike motorbikes/bicycles, the number on the sidewall is the maximum pressure, not the recommended pressure, and as they can't read English they just don't know any better..

Outside of that, it may just be that you're used to driving small FWD cars, in which case it's just a matter of adjusting to the difference in height (makes it feel like you're going slower), the different weight transfer (you actually have some car behind you now), rear wheel drive, and different acceleration curve from the TD engine..

Thanks MRO. You did well on getting 25k for your wheels. I don't suppose your willing to drop any hints on this future project to get the WDTV working with touchscreen?

The TM7 touchscreen bits are essentially just a USB mouse, so the thought was to define (invisible) zones on the screen that represent up/down/left/right/enter/back, capture clicks on these, then pass the corresponding IR code to the WDTV. I have a spare netbook the kids don't use anymore, so it could be a fairly straight forward software project using the COM port to send the IR commands..

Unfortunately with the workload I have ATM, and the fact that it's the wife's car (and now she wants to change it to an Evoque), and I have a new car coming, it'll probably be some time before I get around to it...

Straightforward my arse!!! Sounds like a great project though. I hope you document it if you do it. I'm an inch away from plunging on the WDTV idea... but maybe it'd be simpler to change the head-unit?? But then Alpine doesn't support much video, or FLAC. But it doesn't have to be Alpine. Decisions decisions.

If your getting rid of the GT, I'm sure you;ll find takers here, I would have been tempted. What are you getting for yourself? - and I hope you stay around here to give us novices advice.

Well, everything is relative I guess ;) To me the only challenge will be tapping into the USB mouse in the TM7 (Kamaz have done this for their GPS, so it can't be all that difficult) - the IR dongle is a $20 part and the software would be no more than a couple of hundred lines of code. There's plenty of other options for AV playback, but few that'll play FLAC/APE audio, and definitely none (yet) that'll playback my H.264 HD videos, so my search for alternatives ended abruptly. YMMV.

Undecided on what will happen with the PJS, but It's all several months away anyway - the Evoque doesn't launch until mid-2011, and my Cayenne S Hybrid is a special order (I'm getting a lot of optional extras so I can take full advantage of the reduced tax), so it's several months away too.

Hope you ordered the Red Evoque with the diesel it looks so cool.

The mrs wasn't down with the whole "make your SUV look like a mini" thing (she has no love for the mini at all), so has decided to stick with white.

Just wondering what the boot-up time for the WDTV is? ie how long from ignition to song-play? I notice the Alpine unit takes a while to get through disc-read phase.

Functioning GUI in 30 secs from the moment ACC is switched on (the screen takes 8+2 seconds before it's visible), but there's no auto-resume, so another few seconds to select what you're going to play. If you're using a flash drive rather than a HDD, add another few seconds due to slow read rates.

Hey guys - can someone tell me what the 'push-in' function of the volume dial does? (or is supposed to do??)

it's in the manual,

sorry I didn't read thru the manual too... 555

I think you'll find it's just something they think makes it look more high-end, and so the removable faceplate will fit into it's carrying box. It has no other function, except for maybe thwarting a 6 month old baby from playing with the volume ;)

that's a good explanation !

Thanks MRO for the sensible answer. I thought I noticed that pressing it sometimes brought up the track details... but not always.

On another note - I just installed rockbox on an ipod. Will the Alpine ipod adapter cable thingy enable me to control it through the pajero touch-screen??

The answer seems to be 'no'. Putting a sub woofer in the back and another PS is here with Alpine cable - wont recognise the rockboxed ipod, but will the owners iphone.

I'm now thinking about putting my old EePC on-board. The boot-up time for the WDTV seems too long, and the fact that there's no resume kills that idea for me.

Is there any way to get basic touch-screen functions to work? ie using the existing alpine unit to control playing functions of the EePC??

Can MRO or someone tell me the spec / model of the unit in the upcoming Pajero upgrade?

If you feel you can remember to use the power button on the wdtv remote to turn it on and off, you could leave it connected to permanent power which reduces start-up time to a few seconds (faster than the LCD's start-up) and gives you resume capability. Alternatively, add a delayed-off power circuit like I've done so it doesn't switch off during shorter stops (mine is set to keep power on for 15 mins).

The eepc is a good idea for music perhaps, but the mouse part will be tricky (still haven't looked into that - no need for me now) and as none of these smaller PC's will play HD streams properly they're useless for my video library, so I canned the idea.

The stereo in the 2011 PJS seems to be an OEM unit, not an Alpine like the 2009-2010 model. No idea if it even supports a AUX video input, and doubtful it'll support a touchscreen USB mouse out.
