Guys, what is the current remedy(ies) of choice for this. It's for my friend's computer. It is a desktop which he gets into from time to time changing components, devices, etc - not a proprietary stamped motherboard thing.

The problem is not new, but it's been rearing its ugly head more lately. We'll be putting in a new battery next. Anything else we should do or replace while we have it apart? Running Windows 7 but I can't imagine that would matter, but then again I've seen stranger things.

Thanks much.

The majority of the time that will be the problem. Also perhaps just the contacts are dirty or battery not seated well as he has been inside a few times, so may pull the battery and clean both the MB contacts and the battery and try again.

Thanks Tywais. BTW, while I have you on the line, he is also experiencing freeze-up occasionally while saving a PDF file with Adobe Acrobat Pro 9. Any feasible connection? Or any ideas what may be going on there? No other system or application problems that I am aware of.

Unlikely any connection with the CMOS problem. Is he saving it from a browser display of a pdf file, PDF write (printer object) of a document or editing and saving the PDF file. The browser saving of a pdf file can happen as it may have to re-download a partially completed file. Using Adobe PDF with the print command shouldn't be an issue if disk space is sufficient. Same for editing and saving. Possible problem with fonts? Make sure Adobe is configured to embed and substitute fonts.

He is using IE then saving something from a website displayed on the screen as a PDF file via Acrobat print. Interesting point about download lag time. I have experienced that when saving a simple download (a photo) on my pc. Complains about needing Admin rights. Try again in a minute and the jpeg save works. I'll verify that isn't going on with Acrobat on my friend's computer but maybe it is that simple.

That happens to me on occasion. The browser will just hang, all tabs, then start responding as the pdf file completes. This is due to the browser having to communicate with Adobe and sometimes there is a slow sync problem stopping it from responding for a while.
