Tuna sandwiches.

Why is it that Thai's seem unable to make a simple tuna sandwich: Tuna (oddly enough), Mayo, pepper (to taste) and cucumber (optional)

Sooooo simple, one of the simplest sandwiches known to humanity but still it is just too much for them. They simply MUST insist upon adding all sorts of other crap like vegetables so that the sandwich tastes of anything but tuna.

I hope my rant will suffice.

I don't eat tuna in sandwiches. I eat it as steaks... If I want fish sandwiches I use a jar of my smoked salmon. I mix it with diced, sweet red pepper and a bit of mayonaise.

No. Don't go for mash much in SE Asia - wrong spuds.

What I do like is a few local potatoes steamed for about 45 minutes, quartered ('cos they're small), shaken in fresh parsley then plunged into very hot oil for a minute to crisp the outside. Then shaken in more fresh parsley and served.

The parsley tastes very different between fried and fresh.

I usually take the skins off after steaming, but this is optional. It is a very thin skin, like Rizla.

I usually have a bunch of stir-fry with it, veggies and meat.

Or just stir fry with chopped up bacon.

All the goodness is in the skins.

My mother (Irish) had a strange way of boiling tatties. She would boil them with their skin on, put them in a dish on the table and she and my father would then commence to take the skins off. Probably burning their fingers in the progress.

I eat them with skin and all... even mashed with lottsa butter.

Yes I know B bear, thats why I mentioned it. Im am the king of mash, nobody does it better but cannot acheive it here with these substandard spuds.

I had a mate drive 500km's once to get his fix on my mash (& a couple of cold ones from the fridge) :lol:

You can start a topic on changing the spark plugs on your car and sure to gawd it'll turn into a topic on eating. Of course, it doesn't hurt when bastards like me post photos of great meals.

Like fish, potatoes can be eaten in so many ways it's hard to believe it is the same item. In Canadian markets we can buy a variety of potatoes. Some are good for baking, some are good for mashing, some are good for frying, but the baby potatoes are best eaten boiled and slathered in butter or sour cream.

Me, I like being able to buy a fresh barbequed chicken in one of the many food stalls around Chiang Mai. A 100 baht buys me a delightful, finger licken meal.

I thought this was a rant thread, not a fekking cooking lesson. You know what I hate, I hate it when I come into a rant thread and all these cyberchefs sit around trying to see which one of them can pisse up the wall highest :angry:

Just sent my driver out for a couple of sandwiches for my lunch. I usually have a bowl of instant noodles at my desk, but decided to be different today.

As he doesn't speak English, and my Vietnamese is limited, I asked my secretary to translate for him.

He comes back with a couple of little cellophane packages, marked sandwich loaf, with some horribly sweet, soft bread inside. No filling.

So I sat "What's all this then?" to the secretary, who says that that was what I asked for. "No, it blurry wasn't" says me.

You asked for a sandwich, that is a sandwich here in Vietnam, says the woman.

Oh, no, it ain't - says I. What about if I go to Nhu Lan, or any of those roadside stalls? I'll get a proper sandwich with filling.

But that's Saigon, says this female. Here we are in Dong Nai, and this is what we call a sandwich in Dong Nai.

Shall I sack her? I'll not get anything better. Like all VN, she'll never admit she made a mistake.

(And I had specifically asked for a 'filled' sandwich, with cold meats and salad, when I sent the driver out.

So I'm still hungry (and angry) :angry::annoyed:

(Edit: Dong Nai is a province adjoining TP Ho Chi Minh - otherwise Saigon - and I have to use a ferry every morning and evening to get from Dong Nai to Saigon, which is currently home)

I know what you mean, Humphrey, but yah gotta look in the mirror first. A guy has to take responsibility for his own life. Buy some meat at a deli. Buy some bread and all the fixings and keep it in a small fridge in the office.

It reminds me of the 3 construction workers at lunch time.

One guy says... "Wow! what a sandwich my wife made me!! 3 slices of ham, 2 slices of cheese, half a tomatoe, pickles, cucumber and lettuce with mayonaise"

The second guy says... "That is nothing. My wife made me multi grain sandwich with 6 ounces of siced sirloin roast beef with all the trimmings!"

The third guy says... "dam_n, peanut butter on white bread again. That's the fourth time this week"

The other guys say..."That's too bad, I would give my wife hel_l if she did that!"

I think it's important to use the " Turkish" prison approach to staff who bugger up sandwich orders.

Hang the offender from a beam and beat the bottom of the soles of their feet with a big stick.

That's also the Libyan police technique for questioning a suspect. Very effective.

I would make my own sandwiches if I had time. That's why I take all those packets of noodles to work. So that I can have an instant lunch that takes very little time to prepare or eat.

I wake up at five in the morning - shit, shave, shower and shampoo, plus brekkie. Out by six for an hour of hectic driving and ferry to get to work by seven. It's at least twenty minutes drive to the nearest side-of-road sandwich stall, so I.d waste an hour going to and fro. Not worth it when I have a driver fast asleep, doing nothing.

But he don't speak English, although he's a good driver. I previously had a guy who spoke English, but was a lousy driver - far too slow. I don't get back home until after seven in the evening, so lunch is an important thing for me.

Why does anyone in their right mind spend their lives building power stations or refineries? The client always wants rush, rush, rush and we're idiot enough to try and humour him. Bloody insane.

Today is my 'off' day. Was just going out shopping when it started to rain. Monsoon time. So I'm waiting for it to ease off now.

Personally, I think that waterboarding would be a more suitable technique when educating simple minded fools on sandwich creation.

I would love to know where one goes to catch tuna and salmon on the same fishing trip. I love both of those fish.....and lets not forget scallops!!!

You might like to try Bombay Aloo. Very easy, and I'm sure you can get the ingredients locally.

Steam or boil your spuds until just done. Cube them into 2cm cubes.

In a wok, heat some oil to just under smoking point and add a tsp of black mustard seeds, a half tsp of jeera (cummin), a few curry leaves and when the mustard starts cracking and popping, throw in your spuds.

Stir fry to coat with the oily mustard and jeera, and add a (heavyish) sprinkle of tumeric powder and salt.

Continue to gently sir fry until just short of the potatoes breaking up....they should be browning at the edges just slightly.

If you like chillie you can add chillie powder with the tumeric or fry the fresh chillies just after adding the mustard and jeera.

Hehe...no, I was actually asking. It wouldn't suprise me if the coast of Newfoundland or wherever bears forth tuna, salmon, swordfish and more.

It brings to mind NZ....but I'll take that subject to Secret Men's Biz.....

Nahhhh. Any stewed curry ruins tuna. The only way to curry tuna is to make the curry without the tuna, and add the tuna to the hot "stew" or stir fry at the 2nd last minute.

I'm talking fresh tuna now of course.

Try and substitute your tuna with the local brands like massaman tuna or Tuna Penang.

We can catch both species off the west coast of Vancouver Island where I live. But, you have to go much further off shore for the tuna, and you need a GOOD boat with lots of fuel for that. Scallops, clams and oysters are also common if you know where to go. I will admit that New Zealand probably has an even greater abundance and variety than we do in BC. New Zealand is the only other place where I could be happy living year-round... if it weren't for my love of the ladies.

Pacific Northwest USA or offshore BC in August/September. Surface jig tuna, or chum with pole and 3 meter line, troll salmon.

Is a troll salmon an internet kipper ?

Kippers are salted herring. Herring are caught in nets.

This is a commercial salmon troller. They run multi-lines on down-riggers with dozens of lures trailing behind the boat. Troll caught salmon are usually the best quality because it's a one or two man operation.The fishermen get paid a higher price because the salmon are usually better taken care of rather than dumped in a hold with thousands of other salmon.

They have little floating buoys (called pigs) out the back that they run more lines off.
