New find in Chiang saen District;

Namely Mountain Creek Vineyard;

Despite the name ,you go there for the food at the restaurant;

All Western food ,about 12 items on the menu;

Beer and wine, seating inside and out;

You can read my review on TripAdvisor...;

Adding to that review which was 3 months ago I have tried everything on the menu save two items all of the food is exceptionally good; they will make chicken cordon bleu on occasion, off the menu, the club sandwich ,the cheeseburger, the pork chop, the chicken teriyaki and the fish and chips , the schnitzel (also used in the club sandwich) are all very very good;

Coffee snobs believe their coffee is number one in the area; they also have a Bakery and make their own Sweets;

The type of place that you will likely stay an hour longer than you originally planned;

Kevin the owner will give you an interesting tour of the vineyard;

Excellent English ,German ,and Thai

Here it is : Mountain Creek

good map;

if coming from Chiang Rai City, take highway 1 30ish Km north to mae chan , go thru the bulk of the city and look for the 1016 sign turning east (right); that sign is on a 3 way intersection with traffic light on the northish edge of mae chan;

there is a sign on 1016 saying '1016' but it is largely useless as it is after the turn;

then about 20 km on 1016, you will see a good sized temple with a large tree in the front parking lot; this is on the lefthand side (north side); turn there onto 4060, which bends around the temple complex

if coming from Chiang Saen city (where i live ) , you find the huge white arch on the bypass road (there is only  one such arch); that road is 5033; that road is a killer road with tight , blind turns;

not at all suited for bicycles or night driving; often instead of  going on 5033 (i live on it) for 6 km, we go the long way around (1016 to 4060) , 16 km just to avoid that dangerous road, 5033;

twice as far but can go twice as fast

Finally made it to the highly spoken of Polar Boulangerie and Patisserie today.

Firstly it could be hard to find, take a map or get GPS coordinates.

I liked the coffees, the cakes were great, we also had a sandwich each, my dining companion had pulled pork and said the mayo should be optional.

My ham and cheese was fine, I think that for an establishment like that a better cheese could be provided than the plastic slices.

Nice surroundings, good friendly service.

Price, four coffees, two cakes, two sandwiches plus two cakes to take away, about 800B

I was downtown and hungry when I noticed a place I hadn't tried before. The Steak Specialist (I think that was the name) is fairly new located near the night bazaar. The menu has steaks, burgers, pizza, pasta and some other items. We had the burger and the kebab special. Both very nice. Nice decor, very good service and the prices were reasonable. Will go again and maybe try the steaks. Nice to have another downtown dining option.

mekong pizza is a professional place with pizza; they will do it any way you like; mix and match; half and half;

they specialize in thin crust pizzas and their prices are remarkably low for being in sob ruak (tourist hell) ;

they are closed mondays; else normally till about 9ish; a 'thai 9ish' if they have a group they will stay as long as the group does; they have wine (and a wine menu !) beers;

i used to bring my own blue cheese and they would put it on my pizza; sweeet

Nice.

But it's going to have to be pretty good to beat the pizza I had on Don Det, Laos baked in a WOK (!) over a wood fire.  Best pizza I've had in Thailand, 555.

Plus Chiang Saen, wow.  Sounds depressing.

A little out of the way, take the 1211 south of town and instead of turning to the left after the zoo intersection take the Chiang Mai road short cut by going straight on.

Quaintly named, excellent coffee and cheap snacks.

We lunched at Manorom on Sunday, feeling like a change of scene.

I had a piece of fried fish that was described as "snapper" that was better than anything I've eaten in north Thailand.

My friend had the pad thai goong that came with omelet and one of the largest freshwater shrimp, spreadeagled and bbq'd that you would wish to see.

An interesting crowd as well.

Not cheap at 1000B with 4 coffees but most enjoyable.

There's a neat little cafe, Midnight Library, opened across the road opposite the Mosque laneway on Thanon Baanpa Pragarn Road.

Inexpensive, a nice lunch spot after visiting the market.

Driven past this place many times and finally called in today.

The coffee was good and the food cheap and enjoyable.

I had the Vietnamese Wraps off the daily specials board (was warned they took a bit longer) and they were delicious with their sauce and fitted my daily diet plan perfectly.

Uses local organic produce.

The Condotel cafe has reopened with inexpensive tasty food again.

Fish and chips, pad thai and two coffees 340B.

I second that recommendation. I tried the fajita special and it was tasty at a very reasonable price. Also air con dining room which is nice.

A word of advice to anyone patronising the popular Mamorom Cafe on the river front.

I was down there today doing dreadful things to my diet and the attractive looking red brick style paving has become extremely slippery.

Tread with care.

Lunch at Surf and Turf today was of the usual high standard but an added bonus was the 10% "regular customer" discount.

Where is Surf and Turf, please?

Am I correct in saying there seems to be only two condos in Chiang Rai. The Condotel, and D2?

What did you order Scea?

The usual chicken schnitzel mate, it's just the right quantity for me at lunch time.

My mate had the Aussie Burger on special after I told him real hamburgers always had beetroot on them and he struggled with the size.

I just had lunch there again ,,, but did not get the discount. ? I wonder how regular is regular?? Anyway, the owner was not there at the time and the new staff don't know me yet. Food was good as always.

Found a new spot. All about Sweets. Have driven by numerous times but never stopped because wasn't really interested in yet another coffee shop with sweets. This time I was walking by and stopped in to see what they had.

Despite the name the restaurant offers a full menu. The owner is a Thai lady from Bangkok who opened here some years ago.  She offers Thai fusion items which are mainly pastas with Thai sauces. Also pastas with western sauces, rice dishes and wood fired pizza. We tried spaghetti with Lanna sausage and the lasagna. Both were delicious. So were the sweets. Plan to go back to try the pizza.

It's on Sanambin road a few blocks north of the hospital. Also has off-street parking, attractive decor and air con. I've been getting bored with the usual "downtown" selections so this is a nice dining option to me.
