Home Wireless Network Problem

Featured Replies

This is the new computer that won't allow me to connect with the home wi-fi network.

Click on control panel.

Connect to a network.

Getting information.

I then get a request to enter the Security Key, which I do.

Connecting to....this runs for a minute or two.

I then get the message:

Windows was unable to connect.

Troubleshoot problems was no help.

This new computer is running under O/S Windows 7. If I do a config command, it doesn't show any IP address and also that all the various media states are disconnected.

The router is a D-Link Dir-615. I've already got two other computers connected to this router, although the oldest computer is obsolete and I don't use it anymore to go online.

Any ideas to get this computer connected? Thanks.

Does this new computer have a wi-fi network adapter and Windows 7 compatible driver already installed? If so, then watch this video from Microsoft.

1) make sure the wi-fi is actually switched on on your new computer (are the other older 2 computer connected using wi-fi?)

2) temporarely disable any antivirus and firewall on your new computer, just the time necessary to establish a connection

3) make sure your new computer is using the same security encryption as all other computers you have (wap, wep, etc..), you might want to try to establish a connection without security to start and see if you can actually connect

:)

Check if the DHCP server in the router is enabled... If not, the other computers are setup with static IP...

I was so busy trying to sort out this problem, I didn't get a chance to see your replies. Many thanks though, I do appreciate it.

Someone last evening in another forum advised me to update the router firmware, which I did an hour or so ago. Had to go running out to Walmart this morning to buy a lan cable which I was short off, but that was a minor problem.

I ended up trying to update the router firmware. I was given warning that I may lose all my previous router settings, and to make a backup, which I did. The more I thought about it though, I couldn't see restoring to the backup file, since I would probably run into the same problem. After recreating the router and network configurations all over again, from the beginning, I've now managed to get both computers online, and I'm happy.

Thanks again.
