I turned up at Buriram airport tonight with my taxi fare, who, happened to be in a wheel-chair.

" Is he flying alone?" queried the Katoey (no pun intended) behind the desk.

"Yes" I replied

" Sorry we can't let him on the plane alone. If he had someone travelling with him ok"

After a long series of discussions/arguments the man? was adamant that he could not travel alone. He even rang head office to prove it.

" I'd love to help him and let him on the plane, it's alright this end, but there's no-body at Bangkok" it insisted.

Just then one of our other customers, Eddie, rolled up to collect his ticket.

" Any problems?" he asked

We explained the situation." No problem" Eddie said" I'll look after him"

Richard, our chair bound would be passenger, wiped a tear away and gave out a loud yell of triumph.

We called the guy over. " All settled " we said. " This man will look after him"

" Ahhhhhh" it stammered " I must call head office again"

" But you already said you would let him on if he was accompanied" I retorted.

" That was different,he didn't have anyone then"

He called head office again.

" Head office don't know, must ask the pilot" was it's reply.

We waited an hour for the plane to arrive, the pilot said ok,and back we came.

Another triumph for 'The Farang Connection'

Surely this amounts to gross discrimination against disabled people.

I assume that no mention was made at time of booking regarding the wheelchair. I guess the problem would have been getting the wheelchair from the plane, ramp parked, to inside the terminal. If I remember rightly there are quite a few steps to be negotiated. Probably no Phuket staff left at Don Muang by the time the plane arrived back there and the crew would have buggered off home asap. Still something could have easily been arranged. The old problem of the concept of custome service in Thailand (or should I say Bangkok) "we'v got your money and nothing else mattters".
