I've been looking at getting a netbook and a good deal of them don't come pre loaded with an OS. What is the price of windows 7 home version (full version, not upgrade) in Bangkok?

Also, if a netbook only has USB ports (no cd drive), what's the best way to load the windows 7 once I've bought it?

I see most netbooks have 1.66ghz processors, and figure 2gb ram should be ok for windows 7?

Use another computer and insert the W7 DVD, then copy the whole thing to a memory stick. Insert the memory stick into your netbook's USB port and install from there. The stick needs to be 4Gb.

I believe that WIN/7 HOME is about 1,400 Baht in Thailand. Maybe less.

The most cost effective way to get WINDOWS is to get it preloaded on the PC as an OEM version. That is much cheaper but you can not load it onto another machine if you dump the netbook.

Copying a version from another machine is not just illegal, but you won't be able to use it properly as it will have already been activated. So many things you could get for free, like the Security Essentials antivirus and antimalware software, will not work.

If you get a bootleg/pirate copy it often comes with malware and trojans. So please just pay the money (to any vendor, not just MICROSOFT) and do without all the headaches.

WIN/7 HOME does not have the glass effects so the video card should not be such an issue. More RAM is always good, more important than the CPU normally.

Good luck.

Must be something new... :whistling: or maybe they deliver analgesic in the package...

Good luck with that as that doesn't make the USB stick bootable, just a set of files with no way to start the installation process. A USB DVD drive is what I use for my netbooks.

True ... you may try

http://www.pendrivel...-easy-as-1-2-3/ and then you get a choice of OSes too...It works sometimes...

Some of the links on that page goes to sites of less than acceptable quality though.

I know it may not be bootable but all that is needed is to explore the stick in DOS and use the setup.exe file. The autorun file may work. I haven't actually tried it...........

Thanks for your help guys, might just stick with one preloaded as suggested.

Is that a netbook size?

I am surprised that they come BARE (without OS). they are usually either Linux or WIN7 Starter (When I bought mine, the other option was XP, as vista would not work due to only 1Gb RAM.

I have a Toshiba netbook and my friend bought a Samsung netbook.

Both came pre-loaded with WIN 7 STARTER version, which does all a want. My Toshiba also came with a trial version of Windows office. Plus loads of other stuff.

Netbooks normally come with 1Gb on RAM, so WIN7 Starter works OK, but few can take the upgrade to allow a heavier version like Home or Pro to run.

I bought an external DVD drive, and the Samsung came with one free.

If you are going to buy the WIN 7, ask the vendor to put it on your netbook. This is Thailand, where shop people are helpful, not like the UK where they hand you a sealed box and walk away.

Why on earth deal with all these problem.... Try Ubuntu net-book if a net-book is what you have. It is free software.

It takes less time to get running than what it takes to read this thread...

I never understand why people still think pirated Windows 7 do not work.

Perhaps they had a pirated version of XP or Vista before and after the SP releases,or WGA etc.. they stop working, require new cracks, product key changers, blah blah, what a pain in the arse to save a few baht a day..

Perhaps they dont trust a crack from a torrent site. Once your base is corrupted you cant guarantee any integrity, cracking the OS is as retarded as running a cracked anti-virus solution.

From what you can see it working, but see what the service packs etc.. bring over the next 7 years. For the price to me buying a legit win7 license is worth every penny, no worries, no cracks and seamless upgrading (not just working today)..

Some what confused about price. Tesco - not know for software I know- but today had a display for some windows student thing with four major apps. in yellow and another in green which is windows 7 home and must be activated from asia only and this 7 home alone cost >4300 baht. I was thinking that was the prices I have read about in the past also so it seems anyone doing it cheaper then that is making 100% margin and giving out who knows what else with it.

If you like using windows it will last long enough that even at this price it is really not the end of the world. I won't even be thinking about using it till 2012 anyway.

pretty sure the 1400 baht one is win 7 starter, and the one you were looking at in Tesco is the home version.

Ahhh I see says the blind man. Didn't know they could come up with something less then home already is  seemed like the starter to me already.

Me thinks that with your [Linux] avitar, you are a tad biased. But that aside, here is Wikipedia's explanation comparing all the Win 7 versions (thier list inc pro, ultimate, N and VL options:

Windows 7 Starter

Windows 7 Starter is the edition of Windows 7 that contains the fewest features. The Windows Aero theme is not included in this version. Windows 7 Starter is only available in a 32-bit version. The desktop wallpaper, and Visual Style (Windows 7 Basic) is also not user-changeable.

This edition is available pre-installed on computers, especially netbooks, through system integrators or computer manufacturers using OEM licences.

Windows 7 Home Basic

Windows 7 Home Basic is available in emerging markets such as Argentina, Brazil, the People's Republic of China, Colombia, India, Pakistan, the Philippines, Mexico, Russia, Thailand, and Turkey.[13] It is not available in first world countries including in Western and Central Europe, North America, Hong Kong, Australia and Saudi Arabia.[13] Some Aero options are excluded along with several new features.[13] Home Basic, along with other editions sold in emerging markets, include geographical activation restriction, which requires users to activate Windows within a certain region or country.

Windows 7 Home Premium

This edition contains features aimed at the home market segment, such as Windows Media Center, Windows Aero and multi-touch support.

:coffee1:

Also, it is worth checking out the COMPARISON CHART before buying

Don't read the avatar then as I said " I won't even be thinking about using it till 2012 anyway. " that is why I don't know yet. BTW I was on windows XP pro when I posted that, but on Linux today. I use both Linux and XP pro as I do not have bais toward windows only. I normally use to upper shelf windows stuff and unlike many I pay for it. :jap:

I was only having a leg pull :jap: - not serious. I have been tempted to try Linux, but too scared diving in the deep end.

I too have this weird (for Thailand) idea of buying genuine software, but not high end. More like programs no-one has heard about, like Serif software which I have used for about 20+ years.

Scared? Put int the CD and press enter...

It's more dangerous in the shallow end... feet first... or maybe I should say backup first...
