French burger chain causes outrage by banning pork

A French fast food chain has fuelled the country's bitter debate over the influence of Muslim values by banning pig products from its menu.

Quick, the No. 2 burger chain in France after McDonald's, serves halal-only food in 22 of its outlets, targeting the country's large Muslim population,

The bacon has been removed from bacon burgers, replaced by smoked turkey.

Quick claimed sales doubled at restaurants that have tested the concept but the move has opened a new chapter in the debatewar over how much society should accommodate Muslim traditions.

What pork products are there in these fast food chains?

You mention bacon - I assume maybe pork sausages.

But it's not like real food, now, is it?

No pigs trotters, pork knuckle, pork loin, pork chops, crispy crackling, whole roast sucking pig, hog roast, gammon steaks, pigs brains, sweetbreads and all the other marvellous products that this one animal provides to us through God's bounty.

The only objective and sole purpose of corporations is to increase their bottom line. Surprising?

That's what happens to all the punters as well.............

But there it's the belly line as well as the bottom line - both extending in ever increasing arcs.

That is not a crazy custom, but sound marketing logic.

However, as for accommadation of Muslim traditions, I think it is a side order here, purely a money making stance rather than a racial one.

The other point being, they are using provacative flames to stir up the arguement, 'debatewar' chipping away at the masses to ignite hostility, if a person doesn't like halal, or food in general, go to McDonalds.

The Telegraph used to be a quality newspaper. It now seems to be The Sun with big words. What a disappointment.

The British papers had fun with puns in their headlines after pop star Lady Gaga appeared at the MTV Awards in a dress made of (fake) meat.

"Gaga looks offal" - Sun

"Meat is madder" - Guardian

"Gaga looks like a dog's dinner" - Daily Mirror

"Lady Gaga raises the fashion steaks - and makes mincemeat of everyone else" - Times

Can I just say, I'd like to pork her ?

'Fat virus' blamed for surge in obesity

The obesity explosion that has swept the Western world over the past 30 years may have been caused by a virus, scientists have said.

Researchers have discovered new evidence for an illness they have called "infectobesity" - obesity that is transmitted from person to person, much like an infection.

The agent thought to be responsible is a strain of adenovirus, versions of which cause the common cold. It has already been labelled the "fat bug".

Any excuse for overeating .......<deleted>!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is a virus - but they have identified the wrong one.

The real one is "Mymateswhopiginmacdees" and you only catch it if you are fool enough to associate with it.

Sensible eating and sensible exercise are all that I need to stay under 85kg at 1m80. Not thin, but not obese.

Thought Humph woulda tossed that back at me........ phewwwww!

90kgs, 175cms, be more like it...........LOL

My loving wife, a filpino likes, balut......ewwwwww

Ever get a hankering for soft-boiled duck or chicken embryos?

Some Filipinos think there's nothing finer, even though one must sometimes pick miniature feathers out of the teeth.

Seems filipinos eat poultry before it's born and after it's dead.

No way, Jose.

I saw it, but thought you were still in the land of pounds and stones.

And anyway, it was during work, so I restrained myself.

I don't see what the fuss is regarding halal burger joints. These corporations have their marketting strategies and target certain sections of society in order to make profit (sorry for using such language this time of the day).

If this strategy does not suit your tste in food, or deeply offends your sense of culture, then don't visit the establishments. The market will decide.

Now if it were due to government legislation I'd agree that there is a point to be made.

Just done three weeks down in KL. I like the place but had forgotten just how awful chicken sausages are and beef bacon ain't much better. I would have breakfasted outside the hotel but it was included in the price and I'm as tight as a crab's ar5e. :D

Seldom have that problem in KL, but then I stay in the Chinese-owned hotels (such as the Federal). Not much in the way of extra comforts, but you do get what you want in the way of brekkers. And just 50 yards away are the Chinese street markets for night-time food.

And Sung Hung Gai (??) for shopping, although now Times Square is probably the place to go.

Was in Bangladesh for some work last year. My stomach has still not recovered from the experience. Do not go there unless you have to, then make sure you stay in one of the top chain hotels (Marriott, Interconti, Sheraton or similar) Everywhere else is sheer poison.

general cockup bin here

Tried to post a url, but no see it

(That was in reply to ZPete's non-posting at the bottom of page one)

Now I've been asked to go back to Bungler-desh for a few days. Dodgy curry and pathetic attempts at Western food. And I gather the streets are flooded at the moment.

Well, I'll try and stay in touch over the next week, maybe pick up a few viruses. (Both human and computer types)

Thanks. I will survive.

But until you've been there, one cannot understand how the vast majority of the population live. Even in the heart of Dhaka there are thousands starving on the streets, in the monsoon rains. And my contact over there, a former minister in the government, just has the basic necessities of life. He tries to help, but even he has no luxuries, just the same somewhat 'past their shelf-life' products to cook and serve. To me their quality of life is several rungs below Nigeria. And anyone who has worked in either place will know what I mean.
