"Judea and Samaria" [West Bank] and the Gaza area are lands seized during warfare

Maybe that will teach the Arabs not to keep starting wars.

On June 1, Israel formed a National Unity Government by widening its cabinet, and on June 4 the decision was made to go to war. The next morning, Israel launched Operation Focus, a large-scale surprise air strike that was the opening of the Six-Day War.

The Six-Day War has been characterized as a preemptive war, an "inadvertent war", and an action designed to preserve the credibility of Israel's deterrence strategy, among other things.

Maybe you should read a little less selectively next time. :whistling:

What led to the Six Day War in 1967?

Terrorist Attacks on Israel

From early 1965 to the Six-Day War in June 1967, the PLO through Fatah pursued a consistent policy of border attacks, particularly along the Jordanian and Lebanese borders. Criticism of these activities by the Arab governments and by local public opinion persuaded Fatah leaders to adopt a new approach known as "the entanglement theory." This involved using sabotage to force Israel to adopt an offensive position, which in turn would force the Arabs to step up their military preparedness. This cycle of action-retaliation-reaction would lead to a gradual escalation of tension on the borders, and eventually to the Six Day War in 1967.

In 1965, 35 terrorist raids were conducted against Israel. In 1966, the number increased to 41. In just the first four months of 1967, 37 attacks were launched.

The number of dangerous incidents on the Syrian border increased following Israel's activation of the National Water Carrier from the Sea of Galilee to the Negev in 1964. Syria and the other Arab countries opposed the National Water Carrier project and tried to destroy it by diverting the tributaries of the Jordan river located in their territories; Israel bombed the diversion works in response. This tension came against the backdrop of the on-going border clashes along the demilitarized zone between Israel and Syria, as Syria resisted Israel's attempts to increase use of the DMZ for Israeli agriculture. (The DMZ was the result of the terms of the Israel-Syria armistice signed on July 20, 1949.) Syria launched attacks on Israeli farmers cultivating land in the demilitarized zone and on Israeli fishing boats and other craft in the Sea of Galilee, shelling from the commanding Golan Heights that rise dramatically to the east of the border areas.

Military Provocation By Arab Countries and Soviet Disinformation

While Israel consistently expressed a desire to negotiate a peace with its neighbors, there was no matching sentiment on the Arab side. In an address to the UN General Assembly on October 10, 1960, Foreign Minister Golda Meir challenged Arab leaders to meet with Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion to negotiate a peace settlement. Nasser (Egypt) answered on October 15, saying that Israel was trying to deceive world opinion, and reiterating that his country would never recognize the Jewish State. Nasser's rhetoric became increasingly bellicose; on March 8, 1965 he said:

  • We shall not enter Palestine with its soil covered in sand. We shall enter it with its soil saturated in blood.

...

King Hussein of Jordan signed a defense pact with Egypt on May 30, 1967, under which Jordan joined the Egyptian-Syrian military alliance of 1966 and placed its army on both sides of the Jordan river under Egyptian command. He had little choice since Jordan housed 700,000 Palestinian Arabs whose rioting in November 1966 almost brought down Hussein's government. On June 4, Iraq joined the military alliance with Egypt, Jordan and Syria. President Abdur Rahman Aref of Iraq added these words to the mountain of provocation:

  • The existence of Israel is an error which must be rectified. This is our opportunity to wipe out the ignominy which has been with us since 1948. Our goal is clear -- to wipe Israel off the map.

Armed forces in the Arab countries were mobilized. Israel was confronted by an Arab force of some 465,000 troops, over 2,880 tanks and 810 aircraft. The armies of Kuwait, Algeria, Saudi Arabia and Iraq were contributing troops and arms to the Egyptian, Syrian and Jordanian fronts.

Israeli forces had been on high alert during the three weeks of tension which began on May 15, 1967 when it became known that Egypt had concentrated large-scale forces in the Sinai peninsula, an alert status Israel could not maintain indefinitely. The country could not accept interdiction of its sea lane through the Gulf of Aqaba. Israel had no choice but preemptive action. To do this successfully, Israel had to achieve surprise, not wait for an Arab invasion, a potential catastrophic situation. On June 4, the Cabinet authorized the Prime Minister and the Minister of Defence to decide on appropriate steps to defend the State of Israel.

Who initiated hostilities in the Six Day War?

One of the frequently heard claims against Israel is that she started the Six Day War in 1967, that Israel attacked peaceful Egypt, Syria, Jordan and Iraq on June 5, 1967 and seized the Gaza Strip from Egypt, the "West Bank" from Jordan, and the Golan Heights from Syria in an act of aggression.

The background to the Six Day War is quite different from the propagandistic claims of pro-Arab sources. Egypt and Israel's other neighboring countries -- all Arabs -- took actions in a series of increasingly provocative and threatening steps during May and early June of 1967, accompanied with rhetoric stating very clearly the intent to attack and destroy Israel. Attempts by Israel to negotiate, find United Nations support, or other international diplomatic resolution failed. The United Nations Emergency Forces (UNEF) stationed on the Egyptian-Israeli border were withdrawn without any discussion. A US plan to lift the blockcade of Israeli shipping found little support internationally.

Arab mobilization compelled Israel to mobilize its forces, 80 percent of which were reserve civilians. Israel feared slow economic strangulation because of the costs of long-term mobilization and the damage of the shipping blockcade. Israeli leaders feared the consequences of absorbing an Arab first strike against its civilian population, many of whom lived only miles from Arab-controlled territory. Incendiary Arab rhetoric threatening Israel's annihilation terrified Israeli society and contributed to the pressures to go to war.

Faced with few choices, on June 4, 1967 the Cabinet authorized the Prime Minister and the Minister of Defence to decide on appropriate steps to defend the State of Israel. On June 5, Israel launched a pre-emptive strike against Egypt and captured the Sinai Peninsula and the Gaza Strip. Despite an Israeli appeal to Jordan to stay out of the conflict, Jordan attacked Israel and thereby lost control of the West Bank and the eastern sector of Jerusalem. Israel went on to capture the Golan Heights from Syria by the time the war ended on June 10.

It still was Israel that started that war UG, you can't deny that.

Your reply is incorrect "Maybe that will teach the Arabs not to keep starting wars".

If that is your belief on the facts shown in the Wiki article I posted a link to but apparently you did not read, it shows that you might have been tricked into believing the Israel PR brainwashing campaign.

What happened before the six day war (as you mentioned as well):

The Tension began developing between Israel and Arab countries in the 1960s. Israel began to implement its National Water Carrier plan, which pumps water from the Sea of Galilee to irrigate south and central Israel.

The question remains,Does Israel wants peace ore not?

In another post I will show that the Israel economy has benefited a lot by their expanding military weapons sales and security companies using the Palestine/Hamas terror threat.

Take care all!

Alex

The facts say that while Israel struck first militarily, the war was started by the Arabs.

That's without any research ...

What's new?

Just making things up does not prove diddly squat and if there is no proof offered that a historical video is not accurate, using the term "groundless insinuations" about these insinuations is more than fitting.

You are correct; that "does not prove diddly squat" (sic).....ie, it does not prove nothing...a clumsy double negative that is quite appropriate here.

Leaflet dropping is common knowledge. The two "half truths" I mentioned do not need research as they stand on their own.

It still was Israel that started that war UG, you can't deny that.

The facts say that while Israel struck first militarily, the war was started by the Arabs.

Israel was surrounded by troops and advanced weapons and their enemy was publicly calling for the distruction of the Jews and purposely goading them into war. As koheesti said, Israel struck first militarily, but the war was started by the Arabs who, once again, got the s---- kicked out of them.

So, from do they want peace to who started it. Sounds about right for Bedlam.

I realize this is an extremely touchy subject and you have all been (fairly) well behaved, so I want to see the name calling dropped. We don't need a repeat of former bad behavior. You can agree to disagree and you can do so like adults, cheers.

That is because it is easy to prove who declared war first. :D

On May 14, 1948, the day before the expiration of the British Mandate, the Jewish Agency proclaimed independence, naming the country Israel.[81] The following day, the armies of four Arab countriesEgypt, Syria, Lebanon and Iraqattacked Israel, launching the 1948 ArabIsraeli War;

I'm hoping to show out of the "what's your solution" thread that most of us who disagree about Israel really want the same thing (two-state solution), just have different ideas how to go about it. I think the thread might scare away those who really want the Jews all "gone". No one wants to admit that publically. Hopefully they'll just stay away instead of being dishonest about what they want/hope for.

For the 1967 conflict, which Israel started militarily, you put forward an argument that they didn't start it because they were provoked.

It follows, then, that because the newly formed, self-declared state of Israel in Arab territory stuck their flag in the ground and claimed the area as their own, that this extreme provocation was good cause for the Arab nations to militarily begin this particular part of the conflict.

You will have to blame the UN for that. The UN General Assembly voted to partition the remaining area of the British Mandate into two states on November 29, 1947, one Jewish and one Arab. The Israelis are not the only ones that pay no attention to the UN.

It was a group of Jews that declared independance and the state of Israel. It would be impossible, now, to reverse that, however, since they declared their state, surely they should stick to it instead of expanding it.

They were happy to stick to it until their neighbors attacked them - multiple times. The Arabs need to realize they screwed the pooch, accept Israel, and just get on with their lives. I always used to say that if Arafat had been a football coach, he would have been fired back in the 1970's for producing nothing but one failure after another.

Yes...the Arabs need to accept an Israel. But what Israel do they need to accept? The one that declared itself in 1948 or the one it continues to expand into?

You're suggesting that America has every right to set up shop in Germany, Afghanistan, and Iraq, by right of conquest.

I think alot of Native Americans would argue against that on principle, at least. It is one thing to claim "right of conquest" when there were no international treaties or the humanitarian thinking of nowadays, but it is an entirely different thing to claim it amidst our modern thinking and international laws.

Yes...the Arabs need to accept an Israel. But what Israel do they need to accept? The one that declared itself in 1948 or the one it continues to expand into?

I wonder what the Arab countries were thinking before all of those wars? "We will drive the Jews into the sea! If not, and we get our asses kicked, I'm sure the Jews will forgive and forget and we can all go back to the way it was while we rebuild our armies for the next attack!". The Jews used to be gullible. The Holocaust changed that. If the Arabs believed the Holocaust even happened, they might understand why the Israelis won't fall for their silly games.

It is not the same thing, but If Canada or Mexico attacked us over and over again, I might be in favor of keeping a little acreage to remind them not to do it again. :whistling:

So, your stance is (and correct me if I'm wrong) that because a bunch of Nazi Germans slaughtered a huge number of European Jews, the surviving Jews can invade and settle Arab lands?

I don't see the connection nor the logic, nor the justification.

I'll try to explain. First of all, the Jews haven't invaded anyone. Blame the Brits and the UN. Second, the Jews didn't fight back against the Nazis. They had no idea what horror awaited them otherwise they would have. So in the decades since WWII their Arab neighbors like to threathen them but if the Arabs knew the history of the Holocaust they would know...

You do not seem to get the fact that there were always Jews there and that there were large numbers of them long before World War 2. There was never a Palestine (other than a Jewish state) or any people called Palestinians. Jews bought up a lot of land legally and did not declare their own country until Arabs kept attacking them and trying to drive them off their land. The Arabs made their own bed and have done nothing but whine about it ever since. The rest is history.

It is important to note that there was a Jewish population in Palestine continuously. Even after the Jewish state was ended by the Romans, Jewish communities continued to exist. All of the successor governments tried to eliminate the Jews at one time or another, but none succeeded as numerous accounts testify over the centuries. When the Zionists started the modern "return" to Eretz Yisrael in the 19th Century, they were joining Jews who never left.

In 1918, a Yiddish book by David BenGurion and Yitzhak Ben-Zvi, Eretz Yisrael in the Past and Present, was published in New York by the Poale Zion Palestine Committee. The authors note that long after the destruction of the Second Temple — and even after the defeat of Shimon Bar Kokhba, leader of the Jewish revolt against the Romans in the second century C.E. — large masses of Jews still tilled the soil of Eretz Yisrael.

In the wars and uprisings, many cities were ruined and many communities destroyed, but the farm population could not be wiped out so easily. Under foreign oppression, city dwellers — the propertied and educated classes — chose to leave their homes and migrate to freer countries such as Babylonia. The Jewish peasant, however, like peasants the world over, would not leave his land so quickly, for it was land developed by his sweat and that of his parents.

If the Arabs believed the Holocaust even happened, they might understand why the Israelis won't fall for their silly games.

That is it in a nutshell.

The Jews declared their nation-state. They went to war (whoever started it), beat back their enemies, and now their citizens, backed by their government, are settling on lands outside that nation that they declared.

I'd call that invasion and occupation.

The Holocaust does not justify that at all.

Now if the state of Israel was to go to war with Germany and win, you might have some justification for bringing the holocaust into the discussion.
