Things My Muslim Driver Told Me...

Featured Replies

On the way back from a meeting in Abu Dhabi, my Muslim driver (from Ethiopia) and I discussed several things including religion. Two things that surprised me were...

1) Jesus Christ was Muslim. Even though Islam didn't come around until about 600 years after Jesus died, he was still Muslim. So was Moses. It reminds me of that professor in Pakistan who was jailed for telling his students that Mohammed's parent weren't Muslim.

2) Muslims cannot like Jews or even say any Jew is a good person.

3) My driver attended a Catholic school in Ethiopia. Interesting.

Which is the oldest "god" in the world?

I think the Romans where the first people to beleive in Gods....

but then ................................

if you look at some Cave pictures from millions of years ago, stone age people draw pictures of ' Spaceman ' ect ...... or people from the sky, which over thousand of years got transcripted into different things, so was the first god an Alien? or a human who traveld back in Time >?

The Romans took their gods form the Greeks. The Egyptians before them had gods. The Jews might have been the ones to introduce monotheism, I'm not sure.

Nahhh! Way before the romans. I think the Greek gods predate the Romans, and there were plenty of others of older heritage.... Take for instance the druids of Britain... Pagan culture existed from very early on. Think of Ra with the Egyptians....and many more, I'm sure.

Actually, I have seen some pretty interesting stuff about Egyptian deities that suggest that Judaism and Christianity have their roots there.

But to the OP.... An Ethiopian driver. Right. Ok. I had a gardener that had some odd-seming beliefs too.

Perhaps there was something lost in translation between him (the driver) and koheetsi, or between his teachers and him; Jesus Christ was/is a Muslim prophet, The Qu'ran does rail a bit at the Jews, and, as Endure has said, Ethiopia has some very early Christian heritage and is still the place to find some very ancient Christian traditions, artifacts and relics. Some even believe that the Ark Of The Covenant resides there.

I think that we can all agree that the Greeks had the best Gods! :D

I believe that Zoroastrianism was the first monotheistic religion.

But regardless, ignorance is ignorance regardless of race, religion, color or creed. I am certain you can find just as many utterly ignorant pronouncements from around the world.

Muslims do recognise Jesus as being a Prohpet. Maybe the driver was getting his understanding a tad confused as well as getting lost in translation.

Nothing lost in translation. His English is very good, practically fluent. I've met quite a few Ethiopians over here and am quite impressed witih their language skills.

Sounds to me like the age old religious practice of: "Making it up as they go along"

tales and opinions from an Ethiopian Muslim driver is something like the gospel combined with a dozen fatwas from the scholars of al-Azhar University. the same applied to my Nigerian Christian driver who educated me what Jujus i have to place strategically on my land and around the house to ward off evil spirits, ghosts and witch doctors' curses. the Jujus would also ensure that my loins get very strong and therefore my descendants will be numerous. naturally i could enhance that performance by taking more wives. he could never understand why i had one wife only because if he could afford three wives i should be able to marry at least a dozen... like his father.

Gospel? I'm sharing the opinion of someone from an area of the world that few here get to meet. Is the opinion of my Ethiopian Muslim driver the same as "gospel" or "law" or the same as everyone else from the region? No more than some "uber-intellectual, world financier" German-Swede's opinion. Myself and many others don't buy into that "master race" crap anymore - even if I might qualify at first glance. So I don't belittle educated African taxi drivers. Just like taxi driver in America, many here are educated in their home country where the standard of living is much lower. They come here but have to take what job they can get and it still pays enough to live and send money back home to family.

So I don't belittle educated African taxi drivers.

i only belittle taxi drivers (and others) when they talk shyt² [Muslims cannot like Jews or even say any Jew is a good person] and i belittle or ridicule people who come up with "master race" crap and personal attacks when they don't have anything tangible to say.

moreover, i pity people who use the expression "my driver" when it concerns a taxi driver and i find people disgusting who open a dozen threads in a discussion forum which are meant in a derogatory way against Muslims and Ayrabs but pocket the Dirhams, Riyals or Dinars which they make in muslim and arab countries.

3. He was my regular taxi driver from March until about a month ago when he started working for us as a driver because we needed someone and I trust him behind the wheel. Since I don't drive, he's the one who drives me to and from work and to anyplace where I have company business. In such cases, he is my driver.

4. I earn USD, paid directly to a US bank. Which means I actually bring money INTO this country.

5. Have you posted your true opinion on the solutiuon to the Israeli-Palestinian problem in that other thread yet? [self-moderated]

I believe that Zoroastrianism was the first monotheistic religion.

You are correct. Also Zoroastrians were the first religion to have a Shaitan(Satan).

My Muslim driver in Isfahan, Iran, took me to the Zoroastrian Fire Temple in the mid-70's. We climbed to the top of the mountain and, since he spoke six languages, he gave me a nice tour of the ruins.

Wikipedia has an interesting page on the religion:

If Satan exists (for the believers) and has "powers", then surely any religion which has a devil is not strictly monotheistic?
