November 6, 201015 yr My view is quite eloquently stated by Mr. George Will in his most recent article: "Liberalism's ideas are "about replacing an unimaginably large multitude of diverse and competing ideas . . . with a relatively paltry set of 'Big Ideas' that are politically selected, centrally imposed, and enforced by government, not by the natural give, take and compromise of the everyday interactions of millions of people." This was the serious concern that percolated beneath the normal froth and nonsense of the elections: Is political power - are government commands and controls - superseding and suffocating the creativity of a market society's spontaneous order? On Tuesday, a rational and alarmed American majority said "yes." http://www.jewishworldreview.com/cols/will110410.php3 Not looking for insults. Just curious about where those who disagree would place the blame.
November 6, 201015 yr So Why Did The Republicans Win.... Same reason they lost when Reagan was in office.... Same reason why they won when Clinton was in office... Same reason they lost when Bush was in office..... It is not complicated..... Don't worry I am sure you will in your life see them voted out again & then in & then out till the majority figures it out....don't hold your breath
November 6, 201015 yr I don't think it had much to do with Liberalism or Conservativism. They won because of the poor economy. When people are working and making money, they are happy and feel secure. Whoever is in power at the time of economic hardship is going to to pay at the ballot box. The reason the Republicans won so big is that the Democrats IGNORED the economy almost completely. The so-called stimulus didn't fool anyone including most democrats. People know from their own lives that if you are broke, you need to cut back on spending. This congress has done the opposite.
November 6, 201015 yr I don't really think the Republicans won it so much as the Democrats lost it. The Dems had the bully pulpit, the incumbents, most of the main stream media and the triumvirate of Pelosi, Reid and Obama yet they still couldn't win. Unfortunately, for them, they also had a Congress that practiced Chicago politics, an agenda for big government that the electorate didn't really want, out of control spending, leadership that seemed to think they knew more than anybody else what the electorate really wanted and, of course, the above mentioned triumvirate. The Democratic leadership forced through Obamacare, Stimulus, and the House approved Cap and Trade. They did it without benefit of input from the minority party and over the objections of the majority of the people. The general attitude of the Democratic leadership has been one of elitism over the electorate and voters simply grew tired of it. This anti-Democrat trend continued into the state races as well. Republicans cleaned up on the state level, too, with a net gain of 10 governorships -- Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, New Mexico, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Wisconsin and Wyoming. Republicans also picked up more than 650 state legislator pickups across the nation. The GOP now controls both houses of the legislatures of 26 states, and controls the governor's mansion in 15 of those 26. However, I think the best summation of this election came from the newly elected Senator from Florida, Mark Rubio. He said: "We make a great mistake if we believe that ... these results are somehow an embrace of the Republican Party. What they are is a second chance, a second chance for Republicans to be what they said they were going to be not so long ago." Now let's hope they live up to their promise. My two baht worth.
November 6, 201015 yr My vote is on Obama's misguided policies combined with the economy and whatever George Will said.

I agree. Rubio's quote goes further to explain what he means by the Replublican party being what they said they were going to be - which was fiscally responsible, something they lost during the Bush years and the reason I was glad when they lost in 2006. I was hoping that would l wake them up then but it looks like it might have taken 4 years (that is if they REALLY reform).
November 6, 201015 yr Because it was a flash fashion. Popular discontent. Whoever was in power at the time, dem or rep, would have been outvoted because people are what they are: impatient sheeple. The people expected Obama to perform miracles with an inherited burden. If Obama had not been elected, these mid terms would have favoured the dems. Ludicrous. A two party system, combined with the fact that "democracy" means the majority (ie "average") rules, means that sensible decisions are rarely reached.
November 6, 201015 yr "So Why Did The Republicans Win I have my theory. What's yours?" mah zeory is: the republicans winned 'cause the majority of voters is intelligent enuff to judge what is good for The Greatest Nation on Earth™, such as invading other countries and "investing" zillions on unjustified wars instead of unwisely "wasting" money on stupid undertakings like health insurance for low level citizens who were born to serve and suffer. those republican voters who did not posses afore-said intelligence were properly guided by tutors from FAUX News who told them "da n-word in da White House and his cronies did done it. they is responsible that you is unemployed, have no money to pay yewr moregauge and therefore you lose your house and be homeless."

November 6, 201015 yr those republican voters... I wish we could discuss more German politics. Or even Kiwi politics. Then I could make equally uninformed comments like the above and let these guys know how it feels. The Republicans didn't have a big win because of Republican voters. They won big because of Independents and conservative Dems were also unhappy with the Dems in Congress who have been running the show for the past 4 years (which includes the last two years of the Bush admin so all that "inherited" crap you read is also uninformed).
November 6, 201015 yr They are all fffing crooks. The republicans and democrats and the fed and all the judges elected and appointed. And let them eat cake wifey didn't help even a little bit. Not only are they all crooks but their spouses and significant others are crooks too. This information is trickling down to the dumbest person with a voters registration card. The only remote chance they have of staying in office is to let illegal aliens or aliens vote. The next election will be between Hillary and the dumbest most corrupt candidate the republicans can field. And some people have the audacity to ask me why I live in Thailand.
November 7, 201015 yr The US voter has no idea what is really going on. They stand in long lines to buy an IPhone, are expectant of entitlements, and forgot how the banks and wall street stole all their futures. It appears to be a country in decline. They should only be allowed to vote on "dancing with the Stars."
November 7, 201015 yr The next election will be between Hillary and the dumbest most corrupt candidate the republicans can field. i am aware that the lady is indeed dumb² but can't judge whether she is corrupt and without any doubt her tits and derrière are more attractive than Hillary's.

I THINK I agree with Nam. Obama is an idealist. Idealism doesn't work because humans are basically lazy. Unfortunately, Republicans are realists and know they can stomp all over everyone that gets in their way. If they can't do it legally or morally, they change the laws so they can do so.

They might pretend to be but they are bigger crooks than the Reps because if it were up to them they would take over half of someone's salary for taxes.

As Mark says, all the politicians are crooks... Republicans or Democrats, It makes no difference. As far as I know, Obama is still the president of the United States, and will be for another year or so. The public voted him in and the public wil vote him out. Then, he will be replaced by another crook, and probably one of the Republic party who will then start a war with another weakling country. It will cost the American public a few billion dollars that would have been better spent on health care for those that need it. I don't see any of the politicians lacking in health care benefits... but there are a hundred million Americans who don't have health benefits that amount to anything. Pick a European country and they all have better health benefits than most Americans. It doesn't affect me in the least. I'm a Canadian. We DO look after the poor. it's proven fact that when you put money in a jar for the office coffee fund, then there will be those that NEVER pay their share. They fill the jar full of IOUs which they never repay. There IS no simple answer. Humans are greedy, and as soon as there is an unending supply of money (taxes) there will be those that always have their hand in the cookie jar.

The important elections are the local elections. You can make a difference in your local community. It has to start at the bottom anyway. I guess you don't know this. Get involved with local politics you can make a difference there. Not every American is a dummy. A fact you seem to miss and that was my point.

Wow, Ian, I usually agree with you but where did you get this one, "there are a hundred million Americans who don't have health benefits that amount to anything"? The number being tossed around during the healthcare "debate" was 30-40 million - which means 85-90% of the country has health coverage. Even then, no one is denied emergency treatment. I've always thought that the size of the USA was something most foreigners could wrap their minds around. 30 million might be the size of your country, or half the size, but it's only 10% of the ours. Our massive defense budget is higher than most country's total budget but it's still just over 4% of the economy (11th on the list and quite a bit less than the UAE and I still haven't figured out what their military does). It's also about the same as Singapore's. What are THEY up too? Hmmm. As Mark says, all the politicians are crooks... Republicans or Democrats, It makes no difference. As far as I know, Obama is still the president of the United States, and will be for another year or so. The public voted him in and the public wil vote him out. At least two more years, if he wins re-election, then another 4 on top of that. THAT is the best part of our system - the President is limited to 4 or 8 years then he's out. Not like leaders of other countries who seemingly stick around forever. Now if we could just get term limits for Congress then we'll all be better off.
November 17, 201015 yr Our massive defense budget is higher than most country's total budget but it's still just over 4% of the economy That is one way to dress it up....or down as the case may be. It still does not excuse the 685 Billion spent this year alone & set to go twice that next year....1.2 TRILLION In a country that is 13+ trillion in debt & will have to raise its debt ceiling yet again. While we print ever more Fiat ....600 billion more being distributed to buy our own T bonds as we speak.

November 17, 201015 yr Is it really set to almost double next year? That is what the projections are. Not cheap funding these skirmishes well...I guess they did promise jobs. The whole homeland security has many facets now. From satellites, FBI counter terrorism etc...Then of course you have the interest alone on all the money. Remember...as the debt grows so does the interest. There is not enough money currency & it is well beyond insane with the amount of IOU's being printed It is not like printing more gives you 2 nickels for your dime. The snowball is truly rolling & growing now
