What if she comes from the border area - say Bacup or Todmorden?

I guess there is a slight overlap where the accents get softer or tainted, but to my ear the accent always stays distinctive enough to tell where abouts they are from.

Can one distinguish the accent when only a couple of miles separate the two communities?

Not a couple of miles, but possibly 10-15 miles. For instance I am from Cheltenham, and if you travel north to Worcester you can start to hear the Birmingham accent, a bit further and it's full on.

Then if I travel south towards Stroud, the accent gets more broad as it gets more Bristolian

The home counties are not easy to distinguish, as they all have a 'London' accent

And how about Liverpool's Scouse accent, as against 'standard' Lancastrian? Or Mancunian?

To me, they are relatively easy to tell apart, especially the scouse accent which is um.. ehh.. unique like..

She comes from Yorkshire where it's "right parky Harky."

Nope, it's a Lancashire accent - same as Sara Cox

The shell-suit is usually a give away in itself.
