Wikileaks Coverage In Russia

Featured Replies

Russia is a corrupt, autocratic kleptocracy centred on the leadership of Vladimir Putin, in which officials, oligarchs and organised crime are bound together to create a "virtual mafia state", according to leaked secret diplomatic cables that provide a damning American assessment of its erstwhile rival superpower.

Arms trafficking, money laundering, personal enrichment, protection for gangsters, extortion and kickbacks, suitcases full of money and secret offshore bank accounts in Cyprus: the cables paint a bleak picture of a political system in which bribery alone totals an estimated $300bn a year, and in which it is often hard to distinguish between the activities of the government and organised crime.

Among the most striking allegations contained in the cables, which were leaked to the whistleblowers' website WikiLeaks, are:

• Russian spies use senior mafia bosses to carry out criminal operations such as arms trafficking.

• Law enforcement agencies such as the police, spy agencies and the prosecutor's office operate a de facto protection racket for criminal networks.

• Rampant bribery acts like a parallel tax system for the personal enrichment of police, officials and the KGB's successor, the federal security service (FSB).

• Investigators looking into Russian mafia links to Spain have compiled a list of Russian prosecutors, military officers and politicians who have dealings with organised crime networks.

• Putin is accused of amassing "illicit proceeds" from his time in office, which various sources allege are hidden overseas.

The principal allegations stem from a Spanish prosecutor, José González, who has spent more than a decade trying to unravel the activities of Russian organised crime in Spain. Spanish authorities have arrested more than 60 suspects, including the top four mafia bosses outside Russia.

In a startling briefing for US officials in January, González said Russia was a "virtual mafia state" in which "one cannot differentiate between the activities of the government and OC [organised crime] groups".

González said he had evidence – thousands of wiretaps have been used in the last 10 years – that certain political parties in Russia worked hand in hand with mafia groups. He alleged that intelligence officials orchestrated gun shipments to Kurdish groups to destabilise Turkey and were pulling the strings behind the 2009 case of the Arctic Sea cargo ship suspected of carrying missiles destined for Iran.

Journalist is one of the more dangerous occupations in the Russian Federation.

http://en.wikipedia....illed_in_Russia

Since 1993, 165 journalists have been murdered, another 200 have died from "murder, crossfire, terrorist act".

Okay, it was not in Russia, but videos that showed documented how journalists were murdered and documents that identified the killers were published on Wikileaks.

But you are one of those who somehow argue against wikileaks and the release of such documents.

And its at the moment mosty the USA who wants shut down wikileaks and probably get also their hands on those people who leaked and published the documents.

The whistleblower in the USA could probably get a death sentence.

I am talking about the famous video that was released by wikileaks under the title Collateral Murder.

Does that kind of stuff gets no coverage in the media you frequent? Seems so because you and koheesti and a few others kinda not understand what all this wikileaks is about.

Wikileaks has obtained and decrypted this previously unreleased video footage from a US Apache helicopter in 2007. It shows Reuters journalist Namir Noor-Eldeen, driver Saeed Chmagh, and several others as the Apache shoots and kills them in a public square in Eastern Baghdad. They are apparently assumed to be insurgents. After the initial shooting, an unarmed group of adults and children in a minivan arrives on the scene and attempts to transport the wounded. They are fired upon as well. The official statement on this incident initially listed all adults as insurgents and claimed the US military did not know how the deaths ocurred. Wikileaks released this video with transcripts and a package of supporting documents on April 5th 2010 on http://collateralmurder.com

PS. And yes also that video got coverage in Russia. The question is still open: why you think it wouldn't be the case?

You asked, "PS. And yes also that video got coverage in Russia. The question is still open: why you think it wouldn't be the case?"

I gave you the answer. Russia does not have a free press.

What country is missing?

Thailand is not on that list of whatever. where is that list coming from and what are the criteria for the rank and rating? Without stating that your list is useless. and with the missing mention of Thailand somehow very odd.

And in case you don't notice it is the USA who makes currently a big noise about wikileaks and is trying to bring it down and i think you are taking a similar position here.

So where is your argument about free press related to wikileaks? You come here up with sources that shouldn't have been made public as it is your argument in the other topics.

I was only answering your question, "The question is still open: why you think it wouldn't be the case?" Look up any list of countries and freedom of the press. Russia does not have one.

You answered nothing without given any information what this is for a kind of list and what is the ranking for and where do you get that list from.

Where is THailand? Did Thailand rank better or worse than Russia? Compare - got wikileaks coverage in Thailand? Did you take Thailand of the list or how comes that it is missing?

And because you argue against the release of this wikileaks its very odd that you think you could using it to complain about the press freedom in Russia. There is your position very illogical, except you just wanna bitch a little bit about Russia no matter what and issues like press freedom or the life of journalists are not really your concern.

In the end, if you would make any use of the things the freedom of the press offers to you you wouldn't be so terrible illinformed what wikileaks is all about

I really don't know why Thailand was not on the list. I just pulled a random listing off of Google and didn't even look at it. I know Russia is always at the bottom of any list. You can pick any list you like they are all the same.

I see your point about the WikiLeaks thing.

I am very much in favor of Freedom of the Press. Of all of our freedoms it is perhaps the most important one.

I am not in favor of censorship of any kind except where it may harm people like yelling fire in a crowded theater.

If you will notice my complaints about the WikiLeaks are in areas that are the same as yelling fire in a crowded theater. Listing names of Afghans who have cooperated with the US and listing critical industries and locations that if attacked could hurt the US.

We are in a war. It is not the same for you because you don't have family or friends who are fighting or who have died in this war. I don't even agree with the war but since we are there I would like to get the soldiers out and home safe before we begin to give information to the enemy.

You see I was a soldier. I understand what it is like to have access to classified information. It is a crime to steal that information and give it to a newspaper or the enemy.

Because of our laws about freedom of speech the US government has never been successful prosecuting a third party like a newspaper for publishing stolen classified documents.

So that puts them in a difficult position. I can see their position. I can also see that many on Thai Visa would like to see harm come to the US people and government. I can see their position too. But I think they should admit it. Stand up and be counted if you would like American and UK soldiers to die. I can understand that people feel that way but I think they should have the courage of their convictions and say so.

I remember watching the news videos of people in the Muslim world cheering when the Twin Towers were blown up. I think it is the same now with some on Thai Visa and they are enjoying seeing America have its secrets given to the enemy and realizing the harm that will eventually befall the country as a result of it.

Because of our laws about freedom of speech the US government has never been successful prosecuting a third party like a newspaper for publishing stolen classified documents.

Actually, the Supreme Court has ruled that the media can not be prevented from publishing such documents, but they CAN be prosecuted for doing so after the fact.

In 2010 they list Thailand on rank 153.

http://en.rsf.org/press-freedom-index-2010,1034.html

Did you hear in Thailand about the wikileaks?

Who wants to closed wikileaks and shut it down and is against the release of these documents? How these countries rank on that press freedom index list?

We are in a war. It is not the same for you because you don't have family or friends who are fighting or who have died in this war. I don't even agree with the war but since we are there I would like to get the soldiers out and home safe before we begin to give information to the enemy.

...

Wikileaks does nothing more that telling that part of the war story you wanna keep secret. War crimes, atrocities, the unlawful killing of civilians.

Is the truth the enemy? Are those who are against the war the enemy? Are those who wanna justice for war crimes the enemy?

Is the war in your country? are villages bombed in your country? Pregnant woman killed because they came to close to road check points? Journalists shot from an army helicopter like in the video above?

Does that happen in your neighborhood, to your family and to your friends?

If you lived or worked in the Twin Towers yes these things happened. If you were taking a plane with your family that flew into the ground near the Pentagon yes. SergeiY, are you from a country that is affected by the war? I am. If you are not, all you are writing is things you have read about and not experienced.

SergeiY, are you from a country that is affected by the war? I am. If you are not, all you are writing is things you have read about and not experienced.

9/11 is over rated and cannot be compared to the war in Afghanistan or Iraq nor justified it these wars.

In another comment you mentioned the difference of opinion between Americans and European when it comes to collateral damage and civilian casualties. That is probably because the Europeans know from the generation of their grandparents and parents what it means when war comes to town or to the village and that is not just for one singular terror attack at one day.

Americans totally lacking this experience. They have just the veterans and home coming heroes. That is a total different experience and they still haven't figured out that it is the war they started that kills their soldiers. If you send your soldiers to attack and occupy an other country you can hardly complain about that some of them get killed and that there is an enemy. It are the civilians that are the victims. But that gets probably no coverage in your country.

SergeiY,

You have answered some questions.

Is 9/11 overrated?

Is America guilty of war crimes?

Does America have freedom of the press?

The topic of the thread was, “Wikileaks Coverage In Russia Does this stuff get any news coverage in Russia? “

You answered that question in post # 3 and I said thank you in post # 6.

If you and flying would like to start a thread about American war crimes and 9/11 being overrated why don't you do so.

yes, and your lack of knowledge what wikileaks is all about and misunderstaning the concept of it and your attempt to imply that wikileaks maybe don't get coverage in Russia reveals that you don't make much use of that what the freedom of the press has to offer.

You started the whole 'we are at war' and 'amerikkka under attack' nonsense in your arguments. So don't blame me if i refer to it in my reply.

And these particular wikileaks you are mention in the OP just reveal how the USAmerican diplomats bitch about Russia.

So don't get to upset if someone criticize the USA or turn into your cold warrior mode if someone just made a pacifist statement.

Al Jazerra, Qatar's poodle is reporting that both China and Russia are censoring WikiLeaks. I heard it during the news between 2 and 3PM Thai time. If you want to watch.

Do you think that Larry Sanger the co founder of Wikipedia knows what WikiLeaks is about?

Larry Sanger put it in a message to WikiLeaks, “Speaking as Wikipedia’s co-founder, I consider you enemies of the U.S.—not just the government, but the people.”

Has cold war II started?

Who won the first one?

Has cold war II started?

Who won the first one?

Maggie Thatcher. If it wasn't for her we'd all be speaking Russian and eating vodka by now.

You mean there was a war between the USSR and America and England won the war? Better keep it quiet. I think it is still classified information.
