UPDATE - I'm going to go for the 4x2 3.0V instead!

Ok guys - thanks for all your input and discussion etc.

Just been down to a dealer today to start talking about figures etc. and the 4x2 3.0V is a full THB 160,000 cheaper. Having discussed thing with the Mrs. we have concluded that while the Sportivo is certainaly a much nicer looking beast, there is actually nothing in it that we need or especially want and 160k is alot to pay for the looks alone (the 4x4 is wasted on us, we'll never go off road) - we've already got a garmin nuvi thingy which serves our purposes extremely well.

Can anyone give me a good reason not to do this? ......

Many thanks,

CM.

Nope - you have a fully reasoned argument for not spending the extra dosh. The extra styling and dubious extra goodies are not worth the premium by all rational arguments.

I went in to Toyota today to buy a Sportivo III and the saleswoman told me that they are no longer making any more and that her entire inventory was allocated.

She didn't even try to sell me a normal Fortuner...which I wouldn't have bought...but at least try.

I was trading in my wife's 3 year old Wish that I bought from the same Dealer.

Did I just get a lazy saleswoman or could this in fact be true?

Lazy maybe - Sportivo's out of stock, I would believe.

I tried to buy a sportivo II a few months back, but between enquiring about it and going in to order it a week or so later, they were gone. They did try and sell me a nuvi instead but I was miffed and having none of it.

Just recently, I went in, made enquiries and told they were selling like hot-cakes...... whether they are actually out of stock now or not, I don't know, because I came to the 4x2 decision of my own accord.

Don't get me wrong, if I didn't have something else I wanted to spend the money on, I'd have gone for a sportivo too. I think they really look great, and the DVD player + 4x4 drive .....well 160k is too unreasonable...... but when I asked myself, would I rather have:

  • the nice looking trim and wheels
  • a sat nav (when I already have a good nuvi)
  • 4x4 (when I never will venture off road)
  • sporty (hard) suspension (when I prefer comfort rather than rally driving in a 4x4)
  • a DVD player (which I cannot watch when driving, and my kid can't see from the back, and I certainly don't want to listen to my wife watching some thai crap on it)

- OR - would I rather buy a couple of items that I have fancied now for a while (like a new 40" flat screen, and a few other non-essential, totally pointless, "boys toys"), then I have decided to take the cheaper motor, and wait 2 weeks rather than 3 months for it too :)

I didn't get the free insurance, but I got about 20k worth of bits and peices - some of which I would be happy to pay for, others that I am glad to take simply because its free....... plus free servicing for the duration of its warranty....... all round, I'm happy with the deal I struck and hopefully (finance pending) I will be the proud owner of a fortuner by the end of january.

I am certianly not slating anyone for buying a sportivo - I just made the decision to keep the money towards other things that I want rather than blowing it on a load of features that I niether need or want (except the wheels and trim :) )

If she told you no more then there's no more. I said not long ago if you want one grab it quick, as there were lot's of peep's that wanted one. And they are a limited addition. I think the question has now been answered about what the best Fortuner for resale is. "Sportivo" Ask top price and you'll get it. Gold dust spring's to mind.

Thanks for the responses.

Maybe they should have made a few more Sportivo's.

For me, it's just time to upgrade the wife's whip, so the Sportivo suited her and me.

But now that I can't get one, I don't want a regular Fortuner, so I will look at what else is available.

Not sure if that's a common response, but not good for Toyota - can't buy what I want, so I'll change brands. They are selling so many Fortuners, I'm sure that their marketing department don't really care about it....not yet anyways.

But what else is available and reasonable? I don't fancy the Pajero and not a fan of the CRV or Captiva...and don't want to go up to the X5. Slim pickings

Thanks Fred. Appreciate it.

I'll be honest and say that I checked that number before I call it tomorrow.

It would have been cool if you had given me a number for a Fortune teller and I called and asked about a Fortuner.

I used to do it all the time - leave sales guys a message that a Mr. G. Raffe called, please call back. And leave the number for the zoo.

...I know...I'll get my coat.

No need to check it. First off you will get a computer asking if you wan't to speak Engilsh. I think it's press 9 after ask for reception. They will then put you through to the peep's that can answer your inquiry. They will also phone you back. Best of luck & Let us know how you get on. I have made the odd joke but not when it's about 1.5 mil: And no need to get you coat it's to bloody hot here...INIT

Cambodia has Land Cruisers, not Fortuners. Thailand is lucky to have the much better looking heavy duty SUV. [There's always a dick who comes along with a know-it-all answer when you make an innocent joke].

Nothing would suprise me :whistling:

When I bought mine 18 months ago I got the distinct impression that if a local had walked in with wads of cash I would have suddenly found myself down the pecking order. Only rational explanation I could find for the studied vagueness that greeted requests about expected delivery times and the fact I suddenly got a car with 2 weeks unexpected notice. Obviously some guy's baht had turned out to be money of the freshly printed and dodgy variety.

Hope you get yours soon.

Did your phone Toyota Head office BKK or ask the plank's of wood in Surat. Interesting to know. As I've alway's found the peep's in BKK very helpful.

I did call Bkk yes they are helpful on tech question's when i asked about where on the list is my order they said only Samui will know but they are as thick as 2 plank's. I'm sure they just give out to who ever when there allocation arrives it doesn't matter too much they still have to deliver to me one day. I'll let you know when it arrives or any story.

Tip. check the tire pressure's 30lb all round. As there plank's more than likely be 50lb or something. Enjoy.
