Extension Cable For Webcam

Featured Replies

intend to place a webcam 5 metres from my notebook;

what cable do I require ?

Keep in mind that applications that using the system's electric may have a limited cable length of 1 meter, or they don't work anymore because of power loss. High quality USB extension cables are very hard to find in Chiang Mai, the cheap blue ones from China, 1,5m & 3m are crap. Instead you could buy one of those wireless 1500b spycams that work on a 9V battery or adapter but you need to have the right input in your system.

I'm using a 3 meter shielded cable that works great. The outer casing is a clear plastic and you can see the typical braided wire shield protecting the internal USB cable.

I'm in Bangkok so I have more choices to buy products but an extended USB cable needs to have a shield by my experience.

I tried first with a cheaper USB extension cable that looked just like the shorter versions but got no response and a waste of money.

Sometimes it works - depends on the PC, cable and the cam. Mine never did work well, but my cousin has one in her shop near 7 meters away from the PC. Mine would load down and not work at all. Extending it by using a self powered usb hub helped but still kind of lame and made it only about 2.5 meter.

Now I have a few small cctv cam with mic built in, they cost 650baht @ watashi and they have there own power and can run into a usb adpter or PCI card at the PC. Works up 50 meters and that cable is only 200 baht - the power is fed via the same cable so they plug in at the PC no need for outlet near the cam.. The cable come in 5 - 10 - 20 - 50 meter kit with all connection done already and color coded. Some cards will run up to 16 cams, but most any USB vid grabber will operate one cam at a time. Picture is better then any webcam I have ever had - more like a camcorder. I use them as motion detectors with the added joy they start recording and email snap shots when tripped in any of the zones. Thats if they get past three large dogs - and make it into a zone.:lol:

You are lucky, you did not mention your 10-4 :rolleyes:

Otherwise, I would vouch to try my hands on all your dogs and electro sys.... :D

All within 15 min earth time.... ha ha ha .... :jap:
