My pants were black wool, and there was a tiny stream behind me that we used to clean off the meat before bagging it. We had to back pack it 6 or 7 miles (as a crow flies) off the top of a hign mountain plateau and didn't want to carry any excess weight. It was a slide scan off of an old, faded photo taken in harsh lighting.

Anything we shot we had to carry to the lake in the distance seen in this photo.

I don't hunt much anymore because I no longer need that much meat. I still like to hike into the high country, though.

I admire your optimism. I can see it now, Ian with a blunt butter knife and a handful of herbs chasing some poor chicken around his lounge.................not a pretty thought ( and as for the noise )

With a freshly killed grouse we just stand on their wings and pull the legs. Everything comes away and leaves only a skinless breast. Chickens are a bit different.

But, with nice roosters like the one shown I do a further bit of work and cut away all those pretty feathers from their neck.

With some birds like the New Zealand wild pukeko I take the whole hide for fly tying.

And I can turn many feathers into something that looks like this..

So what i did is stick my very agile fingers underneath the chickens skin and whorly and whorly around. Just to get it tender

Then i put it in a roasting tin for about 1 hour ish.

furthermore......the cooked ones in the photo are not the home-killed farm variety. They are obviously the hormone-enriched, battery-raised chooks. Far too plump aroud the thighs and breast.
