NHK Tsunami Update....

The Meteorological Agency says a tsunami more than 7.3 meters high hit Soma Port in Fukushima Prefecture at 3:50 PM on Friday.

Thirty minutes earlier, tsunami more than 4 meters high hit the ports of Kamaishi and Miyako in Iwate Prefecture.

Tsunami over 3 meters high were observed at Oarai Port in Ibaraki Prefecture, Ishinomaki City in Miyagi Prefecture, and Ofunato Port in Iwate Prefecture.

NHK helicopter footage on live TV has shown a large number of houses being washed away in Miyagi Prefecture and elsewhere.

In Soma City in Fukushima Prefecture, many oceanside houses are under water.

An NHK camera installed at the Hachinohe Port in Aomori Prefecture has shown seawaters flooding parked cars.

The tsunami aftermath was also captured by another NHK camera in Iwaki City in Fukushima Prefecture, where ships and containers have been swept away from the port, before the wave hit a seaside road.

A large number of buildings and oil facilities can be seen burning in wide areas of the Pacific coast.

lots of reports (twitter) coming in that watches for NA have been changed to WARNINGS

NHK saying Japanese Meteorological Agency rating the original quake at 8.8 magnitude, largest since that agency began keeping records more than 100 years ago.

Also updating the police reported death toll to 26 thus far...

Several posts deleted as off topic. This topic is about the catastrophe happening in Japan.

Is the Thai Gulf safe? On the map it looks like it could be hit almost directly. I'm not saying it could still cause damage but it's relatively close compared to many other countries that are already on the warning list.

no way............Thai Gulf won't get this Tsunami ..

And the basis for this statement...?

Sulawesi is on the warning list, 4000 km from the location, expecting 60 cm to 1 meter of water. The southern part of the Gulf is 4500 km from the epicenter. I don't really want to rely on the local Thai authorities when it comes to events like this. I calculated that the first wave might arrive between 10 and 11 tonight.

Look at the map and try to make sense dude............... how 'bout taking a good swim tonite?

Please stop the ranting... dude.

The map with the wave travel times shows a wave heading this way between Borneo and the Asian mainland. According to this map the waves will continu after passing between Australia and the islands of Indonesia, so I would say that we could at least see SOME effect in the Gulf. Anybody here that can say something more sensible about this? (Sincerely hoping for a serious exchange of information here.)

SBK please post your lil thailand map in this thread too to alleviate concerns of boomeranging tsunamis.

UPDATE:

Tsunami warnings issued for Hawaii, California and Oregon

2011-03-11 16:18:18 GMT+7 (ICT)

HONOLULU (BNO NEWS) -- Tsunami warnings were issued for the U.S. state of Hawaii and the U.S. West Coast on early Friday morning, officials said, prompting evacuations along coastal shorelines.

The warning and watches were issued after a massive 8.9-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of northeastern Japan, creating huge tsunamis that have devastated parts of Japan. It was followed by a series of major aftershocks, including one of 7.1 on the Richter scale.

"A tsunami has been generated that could cause damage along coastlines of all islands in the state of Hawaii," the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said in a bulletin. "Urgent action should be taken to protect lives and property."

Emergency sirens were being sounded across Hawaii, and officials have ordered evacuations of coastlines in case a large tsunami reaches the islands.

For the mainland of the United States, the West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center has issued a tsunami warning for coastal areas of California and Oregon from Point Concepcion to the Oregon-Washington border. A warning is also in effect for the coastal areas of Alaska from Amchitka Pass to Attu.

In addition, a tsunami advisory has been issued for the coastal areas of California from the California-Mexico border to Point Concepcion. Advisories are also in effect for the coastal areas of Washington.

A Tsunami Advisory means that a tsunami capable of producing strong currents or waves dangerous to persons in or very near the water is expected. Significant, widespread inundation is not expected for areas under an advisory. Currents may be hazardous to swimmers, boats, and coastal structures and may continue for several hours after the initial wave arrival.

A Tsunami Watch means that all coastal residents in the watch area should prepare for possible evacuation. A tsunami watch is issued to areas which will not be immediately impacted by the tsunami. Watch areas will either be upgraded to warning or advisory status, or canceled.

And a tsunami warning is issued when a potential tsunami with significant widespread inundation is imminent or expected. Warnings alert the public that widespread, dangerous coastal flooding accompanied by powerful currents is possible and may continue for several hours after arrival of the initial wave.

If you take a map and draw radial lines out from the earthquake center you can see that most of the Gulf is buffered from the effects by other land masses. Southern Malaysia is a possibility as one of the radial arms has a direct partially obstructed line to it.

There IS a map already posted here that shows a similar pattern you describe except the waves simply go around land masses. At least something to consider.

Aljazeera just reports there is no leak in the nuclear power plant's reactor.
