Accidental 3 Day Overstay - What To Do?

Featured Replies

I was supposed to leave on the 14th (it's now the 17th) and completely lost track of time. I was planning to do a visa run, because I want to get some dental work done here (crown, root canal, etc), and that takes weeks. What can I do right now to fix the situation? I'm really scared to get some sort of an overstay stamp in my passport (do they put those?), because I'm applying for a US visa. Please help!

- can I get the 7-day extension now for 1900?

- if I do a visa run, will they let me back in?

- will I end up with an overstay stamp in my passport and if so, should I say I'm sick and go to the doctor?

Please help, thanks guys.

It is 500 baht a day fine and no big deal. Simply go and do your visa run and pay on the way out. Depending on what visa you have will determine how long you will get on your re entry. :D

Hi dudeno1,

It is unlikely now that you will be able to get an extension (although not impossible) as you have had an overstay (that being said my friend had a one day overstay and managed to get one by paying the 500 Baht fine first at immigration). If you entered the country on a visa exempt stamp (this means you don't have an actual visa, just that when you fly in you are given 30 days to stay as a tourist without a visa) I don't think you can extend this.

In regards to your overstay you will be charged 500 Baht per day, or part of day, that you have overstayed. If you do a border run (the quickest being to Cambodia) with one of the visa companies in Bangkok (I would highly recommend either of the first two that come up if you enter "Visa Run Bangkok" into Google, from my own experience) then they will take care of it for you, no problem, just pay your money at the border. Then you will be let back in for 15 days on a new visa exempt stamp.

The alternative is to do a proper Visa Run (again available from the companies on Google) and obtain a single or double entry tourist visa (free until the end of the month). This gives you 60 days after you enter the country and can be extended for 30 days at immigration in Bangkok giving you 90 days total. If you get a double entry visa you can then do a visa run again after 90 days and do the same again, effectively giving you 6 months in the country.

Yes, you will get an overstay stamp in your passport.

This has no effect when re-entering Thailand (at least, up to now).

What effect it will have on your application for a visa for the USA is hard to say.

I think it will depend on the country that your passport was issued for, and whether the US official has had a bad day.

This is what an overstay stamp in the passport looks like:

And this is an official receipt for the fine:

In your case, with 3 days overstay, it will be for 1,500 Baht only.

The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place
