Chula, Mahidol make it to top 200 rankings

By The Nation

Chulalongkorn and Mahidol have made it to this year's list of top 200 QS World University Rankings in the field of life sciences.

They were the only Thai institutions that made it to the list, which was released yesterday.

Leading the list were Harvard University, University of Cambridge and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology respectively. Few educational institutes in Asia made it to the top 10, with the University of Tokyo securing 20th place.

Chulalongkorn held 130 ranking, while Mahidol stood at 112. Chulalongkorn won 27.2 points on the academic front, 6.7 points as a reputable employer and 19.8 points from citations. Mahidol won 28.4 points for academics, 15 as top employer and 25.9 from citations.

The weightings are 50 per cent for academics, 10 per cent for reputation as an employer and 40 per cent for citations.

Chulalongkorn is one of Thailand's oldest universities and has been winning top marks for the past four years under the Times Higher Education - QS World University Rankings. In 2008, it won 72nd place for Social Science, 86th for Technology and 108th for Life Science & Biomedicine.
