At my school; from the time I actually started working until the time I physically had my work permit in hand took about 6 weeks.

That actually sounds about right. It probably depends a little on where you are and how quickly the school can get your papers into the Ministry of Labor.

I assume you are talking about six weeks after you received your non-immigrant B visa.

The last two I received were processed while waiting, but a person from the school was with me to translate everything. This is in the Issan region.

Our WP papers are submitted the same day, but there is a delay when the actual work permit shows up. The renewals are quite quick, however.

Yes like everything else here in thailand every office and situation is different. Ask ten different officials the same official question and get ten different answers lol, but it does make for quite the adventure most of the time.

Renewed my WP last year and was in and out within about 20mins, that included all the silly photocopying and signatures.

Both the original work permit and the renewals took one day.

Okay, here's my experience. I'm working in a government school.

- school's papers 2 days

- educational service area 1 day

- labour office, initial work permit (WP.2) 7 to 14 days, as the governor has to sign it

- labour office, renewal work permit (WP.5) 20 minutes up to 2 days.

I signed my work contract and various other pieces at the end of March.

Work permit is still "awaiting approval in Bangkok" according to the school.

Beginning to get quite concerned as once again I am "working illegally".

In Chiang Mai, initial work permit was applied for by the school on first day of employment at labour office, work permit was ready for collection 7 days later.

Renewals I have no idea, I go to the school admin a month before it expires, they get is sorted relatively quickly, I think in one visit to the labour office.

Other than it not being a school (just a director level position at a Thai company) ... my experience is the same. They said it would be ready sooner, but scheduled me to come in and sign it one week from it being dropped off. I only showed up to pick it up and pay 3010 baht, had to go in person to sign it so they could put the tape over my signature.
