Personally I think if you have any luggage you are going to take a taxi. Its cheap and door to door. While taxis remain cheap people will use this method.

At Makkasan its such a hike to get from the MRT to the platform; did they not consider people using other train routes? This seems a blatantly huge oversight. Purpose of having metro systems is that you can go from A to B by using one OR MORE of the metro lines. Anyone who has lived in a city with a metro knows this.

If they don't get the volumes of passengers anticipated then it would make sense to extend the line to Pattaya. Assuming the track can run on the ground rather than in the air, it should be much cheaper to build than the existing route.

most of the pros are purely from a personal point of view - i.e. they use a bit of it and therefore it must be OK.THe truth is that the rail systems don't address public needs correctly - they don't go to the right places nor do they extend far enough - they are still largely window dressing.simply looking at an "accounts balance sheet" is also a waste of time.In most cities the public transport systems are subsidised - the benefits arise out of the relief to road traffic, benefits of getting your employees in and out quickly and on time etc - unfortunately for the vast amount of business and commerce in BKK the system has no use and therefore no appear. To be of use requires a huge amount of public funds without corruption - so there's a snowflakes chance in hell of it ever happening in Bkk

They don't go to the right places ... meaning - they don't go to your front door.

They don't extend far enough ... meaning - they don't go to Pattaya.

Does any transport system suit everyone? Is every system suitable and cheap enough for everyone?

I imagine the Bangkok system is of use to the hundreds of thousands that use them each day. Sure, there could be more, but they are building more. They are extending lines. They are adding more carriages.

The existing system gets people into the major business districts, and in the process, gets a lot of cars off the roads.

Even with corruption, it is happening.
