Laser Computer Is Linux Only

Featured Replies

We bought a Laser brand computer years ago and it is still going strong, so, if anyone has one are they still a good brand? How good is the Linux on it? Reviews if any!

hi'

that' a good news :D

a pc with linux from years ago, so surely with kernel 2.2 or 2.3 :o

I currently use Suse 9.3, but any time somebody(customer)ask to build their machine, I always propose a Linux distro, even if for now it's not this popular...

so, any company builing PC with Linux inside is welcome, but the final decision stays with the customer ...

I read this has a Thai Linux on it, what do you suppose that means?

The pc we bought from Laser years ago was win98, apparently they changed over last year. But the quality of the machine itself has been great, we are right on the ocean and it has no rust, fan still works great, only had to upgrade the RAM but the hd is about 4 years old, same with cd player --all the hardware is still going strong. So, when another pc we had built finally dies (it is not in as good condition as our old one) we were looking at the Laser Linux pc.

hi'

your first post didn't say that you "old" pc was on win98 ...

anyway, having Linux installed is not a bad thing, just check a few things.

1.which distro; red hat, fedora, Suse, mandriva ... else

2.what is the hardware inside?

cpu P4 or AMD, ram DDR or DDR2 and which one and which amount, 256 or more?

motherboard, what name?

video card is there one or is it on board?

same for sound!

what kind of connections on, USB, how many? firewire? ethernet?

what do they give along with? keyboard, mouse(optical?), printer?

tell us this and someone will say if it is worth or not :o

Sorry Francois, I didn't mean I wanted to install it on my old pc, I am looking to the future when it dies and wondering if anyone knows what kind of Linux (and how good it is) is installed on the Laser brand pc.

hi'

alright, so.. :o same question; what's the hardware inside, cpu hdd, ram, video, sound, plugs ..etc, the distro inside if it's a thai one can anyway be setup for 2 users, one in Thai and one in English, this is Linux :D

the brand is surely an assembler name, but what's important is what do they put together inside! :D

Ok, good questions for me to ask when I finally go computer shopping.

Not sure if this is a stupid question since I am totally Linux ignorant but if its in Thai does that make it like the dreaded Windows Thai machines where the help and office stuff is all in Thai?

I bought a 13,000 baht Laser computer for the kids a few months ago from Lotus and it was not Linux so don't count on all Laser having Linux installed.

Did it have anything installed?

I got this info on Laser from an article :

PC manufacturer Laser Computer has replaced HP (NYSE: HPQ) Latest News about Hewlett-Packard as Thailand's top PC seller. Laser Computer sells only Linux PCs and has been growing at an annual rate of 300 percent.

http://www.linuxinsider.com/story/32110.html

Granted it is a few years old.

I suspect that article means it does not include Windows - rather than the more positive includes Linux.

The computer had what appeared to be a 30 day trial version of Windows XP installed but no software operating disk of any kind.
