Gov/ Private Hospital Birth Costing

Hello All.

First of, I live in Pattaya. So right forum or not, not sure of correct placement?

We, wifey and farang hubbie, were curious to find out about Expats and their shared experiences of preganancy-birth delivery in the Privately run and or Government run hospitals in the Pattaya locality?

Do you have some personal experiences to share, whether it be the Private or perhaps Government hospitals in Pattaya City or even Chonburi Municipality?

Wife and I are prepared at this stage, five months into preganancy, to put aside fifty thousand baht for the eventaul day, two or three days is what is expected?

However, have heard that some of the Private hospitals may be o.t.t on excluded expenses? Especially if the joyous ocassion should turn to more the complicated Caesarean section, i've heard it rumoured one hundred thousand baht upwards?

I guess what i'm trying to finding out is are the Private hospitals in Pattaya as cracked up as they are purported to be and were you overly priced at the end of the day when having checked out at the Outpatient Department? Like to know all?

I would welcome any personal stories and or recommendations, good or bad, about the local hospitals even the Government run hospitals? Bangkok-Pattaya seemingly the best, although Pattaya International has it's own supporters, true?

If I can't find any conclusive evidence to support not using the Banglamung hospital in a secondary instance. I would really welcome any stories from this hospital as I i've an idea of the cost for Thai costing, but for farnag not sure and this is for the the more complicated Caesarian delivery, quoted at 15,ooo baht?

For the two better run English speaking and etiquette private Hospitals, i've been quoted between 30-32,000 for 2-3 days, there abouts for normal vaginal delivery and Caesarean delivery package 46,000-50,000 baht. Sound cheap-expensive?

I can't think of what i've missed out, but then this is the first time and they do say experience counts for everything? Must be a few extended families in LOS, guys?

What was your experience, good or bad, and what would you recommend I do?

Thank you for your time.

Kind Regards. DCQ :o

hello, if i can remember i have a friend who prepared to gave birth in a government hospital. and she put the money in an envelope and gave it to her doctor who paid all the expenses including the doctocs fee. but she's suprprised that her doctor gaave back the change (1,500baht) but she didnt accept it and told the doctor just keep it for you. (like tip). then after than another couple asked my friend where did she gave birth bcoz here private hospital asking her for 60k for normal delivery and more than 100k if CS.which is a big amount. so in short she also gave birth in a government hospital and paid the amount of 3.5k inclusive everything. they have a private room like u're in a 3 star hotel.

good luck!!

The quote for caesarean came from a Taivisa posting I viewed last night.

The pricing included most necessary inclusions, although the total I mention in my posting of 1oo,ooo baht was for the more luxurious Bumrungrad hospital in Bangkok, with McDonalds and all I believe.

I can't see normal vaginal delivery being more than 6o,ooo baht in Pattaya?

Anyone been charged heavily for outpatient costing in Pattaya Hospitals, at all? DCQ

Interesting read ilyushin. At five months in, I probably do need to see a paedetrican as opposed to a monthly check at the local clinic! I note the telephone number. Thank you for help. DCQ

Not many couples at it then? :o

Did really want to know if anyone had used the Banglamung Hospital recently, anyone took their dearest to this hospital for birth, perhaps not at all in a given life time?

On a another note. Here's some info:

I remembered an article yesterday mentioning that you could go to Bangkok Pattaya Hospital on Saturdays and perhaps even Tuesdays for breathing exercise classes in the morning period, possibly 10 am if I remember rightly.

I told GF about this and she told me absolutely no way she's interested, charming!

Just wanted to share that piece of information for future expectant couples trying to get clued up. Any other input, surely someone has been through it all, tell all!

Anyone been to any of the classes at the Pattaya Bangkok International Hospital?

No, not a lot of breeders here. Perhaps it's something in the water -- like all that whiskey!

All my Thai friends are too scared to go to Banglamung Hospital. I have no direct experience.

I wish I'd known that 2 months ago!

Yes, well Thai girls are generally clueless about childbirth -- Whaddya mean it hurts? Our obstetrician preferred to not show my wife any childbirth movies. For a C-section under optional general anaesthetic breathing is moot. I've only been through it once but Pattaya International seems OK. C-section and 3 nights in a private room, 24 hour care for mommy and newborn, you won't even have to change a diaper. Everything included (except for husband's meals) for 44K baht. Oh, and don't even ask about diaper services unless you want to get your head chewed off.

For Birth costing:

In Thai gov. hospital: If you have no money and your wife has gold health card(Thai gov. provide all Thai resident ppl) You pay only 30 baht.

But If you use special dr. or stay in private room. You pay around 3,000-5,000 Baht.

Private hosptal: should to pay around 40,000-80,000 baht .Mostly will suggest to do the caesarian section, but in fact woman no need to do that because gonna have effect for her body not like by natural.

Samitivej Hospital in BKK charged us 120K, caesarean section. They said it was going to be 39K if normal.

Bangkok Pattaya Hospital belongs to the same chain, their pricing could be similar.

Whilst I have no personal experience regarding baby delivery, my local hospital the Queen Sirikit Naval at Sattahip has excellent modern facilities and I have always had great treatment there at thai prices. A friend of mine recently received 2 similar treatments for a blood condition within 1 year. The first in an International Hospital in Bangkok, 48,000 baht.In Sattahip 1900 baht. Unless it is a major operation, and you speak no thai, I find such ridiculous prices a rip off. I paid 7000 baht for my sister in law's Caesarean in Bangkok 2 years ago!

Do you think they actually ever do normal ones?

It's a con.

Caesareans don't interfere with the doc's tee times.

Maybe a year ago I participated in a discussion on this board regarding the same question. To my surprise, it turned to be a widespread practice among BKK hospitals.

So many posters had the same experience. Yes, I also believe it's a con that brings the hospitals multiple benefits.

Just think of 80K extra that I had to pay if nothing else. Then, on delivery, it's not the right time to question their decissions and negotiate and they know that.

Well, I guess you guys are living in the wrong part of the country with prices of 50,000 - 100,000 and upwards. Come to sunny Surin, spend three nights in the VIP room of the private hospital, have your baby and get change from 20,000 baht, and that price is for a Caesarean Section too. A normal child-birth is approximately 50% less. :o

Digested all that. I can see the point about the caesarian being an unwanted add-on, most painful indeed, obviously my wallet will be a casualty of miss-information!

After discussing this matter with my family and expectant Wife (wed recently!) we see validity in forseeing the birth & costing and day's ahead in Ubon Ratchitanni!?

How many expats live in this part of the world, half dozen?

How much cheaper was the billing in this province Nomad97?

If we do opt for an Ubon experience, there should be change from the bill, tad!

My latest emailings to the Bangkok-Pattaya and Pattaya International Hosp' have yielded the same package costing, and from further questioning I should pay the hospitals a visit and see first hand, if the bill matches the service.

What more can be done?

My sensing tells me that viewing the hospitals is a concern that will pay dividend!

Some of them are waiting just for that - to visit them. See the waiting room of BKK Pattaya hospital. Behind the painted glass wall is their restaurant. Beautiful.

Think about the kid in the future! All the jokes for being born in Pattaya, bloody shame.

I don't really see much devalue about being born in Pattaya but your comment IMO is not coming groundless from nowhere.

Was not Tata Young born there? Or I mixed her up but some other Thai celebrity?

I shall decree 'Chonburi Municipality' and change the subject amongst Thai elite.

What's up with hospital politcis and auspicious timing then, what's up? I read it, but find it to be another disconcerning factor, if it is changeable or not? Between a certain time, prob' mid afternoon to late evening one cannot fix the time, or such?

Anyone put out about such troublesome interfering? Is the doctor on his tea break?

If you and your wife have been to the hospital before (even if you haven't) they would admit you any time it comes up.

It's just easier (in administrative terms) if they knew you and there was a record of basic conditions.

Cobber Jr. was born at Bangkok-Pattaya nearly 2 years ago and our experience was very positive. Everything was first class.

Total cost was 27k for a natural birth with a 2 night stay.

We were initialy quoted 2 prices.

25k for natural birth without epidural and 2 night stay.

27k for natural birth with epidural, or c-section and 2 night stay.

Friends that have had difficult c-section births and needed stays of 5-7 nights have ended up with bills in the range of 40-50k.

At the time we were told that the cost at Banglamung would be about 5k,although we never actualy got a quote. Its hard to say if the extra cost was worth it. Im a bit of a fan of the Govt system and we use it occasionaly, but i can honestly say that our experience at Bangkok-Pattaya was excellant.

Another alternative if you take the Govt. path is to go to either Sri Racha or Sattahip which are bigger hospitals than Banglamung.

You do hear of cases where Doctors try to persuade the patient into an unnecesary c-section but we did not experience this. In our case it would not have been more expensive. I think is is not only to pad the bill but also much easier and safer for the doctor to do a c-section rather than a natural birth. C-section is quicker ,easier and there is a lot less that can go wrong.

Thanx for the input. How is Cobber Junior? Looks 2B about three years!

The total cost for your birth at B-P HOSP is kosher, 27 K sounds right.

Your personal experience, without bad stories to speak off, is encouraging!

You also mention the government route, that is a possibility. Although I do hear that alot of people were pleased with the outpatient department and billing in the private, and in some cases were not presented with a padded out patient bill preceeding formalities!

That makes me more sure of myself to opt for the more expensive hospitals in the City. I'm encouraged to hear the news, hope is around the corner, for now that is!

It's also encouraging that you speak of the c-section not being a worst scenario.

I'm assured that if this is the route taken, then as such it is facile and without complication, and as you point out, quicker for the tortured-mother labouring!

I look at this as a sidelined father! I shall keep close contact with a clinic or a specialist to tell before hand what the likliehood will be of a c-section being performed. I will stick my neck out and say that in most cases there is a likliehood that the nurse-doctors will tell in advance whether or not a c-section will be needed months before or at the very worst, seconds before impact, or checking of my financial credibility!

Actually, I find the whole unearthing of fact, an impossible subject! I succeed!

Errm, I should just pay the hefty bill, come rain or shine, don't you think so?
