Hello, My intention is to arrive in Bangkok and get a visa on arrival....and then get an extension after the 15 day visa expires. However, I read here that an extension to a visa on arrival is not possible.

Can anyone please clarify or confirm/deny if that information is correct?

If it is correct, what is my best way to initially or eventually get a 3 or 6 month visa?

Thanks,

Terence

PS: I am 63, and American citizen

What you mean is a visa exemption entry stamp (30 days at airports, 15 at land crossings), the VOA is a different thing altogether.

Exemption entries are, or used to be, extendable by seven days so effectively in your case no use.

Best option is probably a double entry tourist visa, provided your local Thai embassy is handing these out. Many Embassies interpret the rules different and many only give single entries. Even those that do give them ask for confirmed flights to support the application.

A single entry tourist will get you 30 days, then you can do a visa run to a neighbouring country and get a second one.

Hope this helps, but I'm sure others will be able to give fuller advice (I'm in a rush at the moment - off to work in 3 minutes) :D

As said you are not entitled to a VOA. You would get a Visa Exempt Entry.

Without a Visa you might not be allowed on the flight.

You need a Visa.

A single entry will give 60 days and can be extended by a further 30 days. For 6 months a double entry Tourist Visa will fit the bill.

Thanks to both of you.

LB, if I understand you I need to go to a Thai consulate and get this single entry or double entry visa?

You can apply for the visa by mail. No need to go there personally. Best call them first to ask what they need from you. For the tourist visa it usually it is the completed and signed application form, your passport, application fee, stamped and addressed return envelope, tow passport-size photos.

Yes that's the norm but last time I got a tourist visa here in Sai Gon the Consulate lady demanded a copy of my airline ticket to Thailand. Goes right against my instincts, normally the M.O. is get the visa first then book the flights though, provided you're not on the Interpol Xmas card list, a refusal is unheard of.

btw apologies for the 30 days for tourist visa, too early in the morning and too much of a rush. :D
