Anyone have experience here with this? The child was hyper in kindergarten and now it seems more so with 1st grade, Phathum 1. He lives with parent over at Ban Pong.

Anyone know if there's a child psychiatrist or psychologist in Ratchaburi town? Perhaps at one of the several hospitals there?

I did find this longish article on the www:

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

A detailed booklet that describes ADHD symptoms, causes, and treatments, with information on getting help and coping.

Personally i dont think ADD/ADHD is anything more than kids with energy to burn- its only this generation of humanity where it became a 'disease' -

I have 2 kids...

Dude I was told I was add when I was 4. My mum never put me on drugs (thank god) and yes it is treatable.

You may find he has a wide variety of interests and you must encourage him to explore them himself. I have to say at that age diet is very important and as a kid I was never given chocolate, snacks etc to take to school and eat at lunch.

The trick is to let him feel free without feeling controlled but at the same time to know whats right and whats wrong

If you take him to the doctor here they will straight away put him on meds, I cannot express how much of a bad idea this is. This does not solve the problem, it only puts a blanket over it and after a while, mentally he may start to get worse and develop more serious issues. The docs will say that there are things they didn't notice/think about before when in actual fact its the drugs that have created these new illnesses/symptoms hence there is no way they would have been able to.

Unfortunately many children with add-adhd never get off drugs, they just get transferred to new ones for the reasons I mention above.

Im 27 and I still have to manage myself every once in a while but life experience will help him find his own way and that really is all you need. Just be patient and observant and above all love him.

You won't find a child psychologist specializing in this in Ratchburi, and it is something easily misdiagnosed in both directions i.e. missed when present and wrongly diagnosed when not really the case.

it would be worth bringing the child to Bangkok for a proper and thorough evaluation. After care, if required, can probably be arranged in Ratchburi but for the initial work-up, needs to be Bkk.

Dr. Umaporn Trangkasombat at Chula is probably the best specialist i nthe country for this (and other child behavioral/prychological problems. Samitivej Srinakarin also has a very good psych unit ("special Needs Child Center") with several docs specializing in children.

Avoidance of junk food and anything high in sugar are good suggestions, many kids get hyper from refined sugar and nowadays Thai kids are consuming huge amounts of very sugary junk foods. Food additives have been theorized to possibly play a role in develeopmental diosorders as well. Whether you can get the parents to enforce a ban on junk food/drinks is another matter...

Misdiagnosis is a big problem, many parents cant cope so some docs see an opportunity to make some commision and take advantage of it. There is a programme by a journalist called Louis Theroux which concentrates on the over medication of America. I think youll find it interesting as it deals with many different cases and quite clearly shows how some meds are just not needed.

Please, whatever the doc says try and stay away from meds. I use to go to a support group with people who had aspergers and add and the damage some of these drugs have done to people is quite criminal.

Good luck man

Afraid I can't day as the website does not provide any info on qualifications, experience, special interests etc. (Which in tunr is whay I tend not to use this hospital..they may have some excellent specialists, but I have no way of knowing).

No harm in trying but if you can spare the time to try to get seen by Dr. Umporn at Chula it would be worth it.

Also a good idea to get at least 2 separate opinions especially if medication is being contemplated.
