Angkor Wat

Has anybody driven from Thailand to Angkor Wat? Which would be the best route by road to Angkor Wat. Any obstacles to avoid?

I am considering to visit Angkor Wat with three others in a rented vehicle with a Thai chaffeur.

Any feedback is appreciated. Thank you in advance.

I asked a similar question before and got some great response.

Have a look at this thread.

Flying there is the best option.

Sory but you wont find a thai chaffeur and rented vehicle that will take you there.

The roads are virtually non existant. It can take up to 24 hours to travel 140 kms and a good run would be 6-8 hours.

When taking a vehicle into Cambodia you are only permitted to drive in the province that you enter in, so it would be a risk to drive on to Siam Reap.

In theory it is perfectly legal and possible...4WD is recomended....

BUT

I've asked time and time again for anyone who has actually driven their own vehicle there (from Thailand) and I've never had a satisfactory response....i've been wanting to drive there for some time.

There was a previos poster who looked like he was about to go but haven't heard a thing since.

I still want to drive there, but I'm not going alone, I think it'll need at least 2 vehicles...there is a question mark over insurance, but it's only about 150 to 200 km each way. The wet season is not the time to go...if anyone would like to do the trip early next year, I would be very interested in forming a convoy and going. One of my Thai customers told me there is a company that specialises in organising this sort of thing....anybody know?

AnKhor Wat is a beautiful place and having your own vehicle to drive around the temples (it's a huge area) would be a fantastic bonus!
