Problem is, of course, many Thais mispronounce Thai, as Bambina pointed out, many mispronounce the "R" sound. And then argue with you that they are saying it correctly!

Two comments here, both have to do with the middle syllable ‘rhu’:

1. It may be true that often the Thai tongue gets lazy and pronounce without the vibrating ‘rrrr..’

But it still must come out with the ‘R’ sound as in ‘rhu’. Thai ears will pick up right away if it veers off too far to the ‘L’ sound as ‘luh or loo’ and it sounds wrong.

2. Make sure the pronunciation of this word is short. Has to be short! To mispronounce it long as ‘roo’ can be offensive. The long sound means ‘hole’ and Yes, it does mean her private part!
