I have a 2003 Ford Laser Tierra 1.8lt that supposedly has a problem with the ECU and it needs replacing. Local mechanic in Phetchabun quoted 98,000 THB just for part, Ford wanted 68,000 THB. Does anyone know where I can get my ECU checked out/fixed? or alternatively where I can buy a secondhand one?

Your a great fuking help when someone ask's for help.

Well if the ECU is 100K, it would be an option to check how much a second hand engine with the ECU would cost. BTW, do you have any bright ideas that would help the OP? If not, why bother to reply? :whistling:

Have ordered from autocomputerexchange.com in the states a replacement ecu for my jeep wrangler, cost including post 405 us dollars, with a 100 dollar cash back when mine is posted back to them. It is a reconditioned unit configured to my vin/ chassis number, there tel number is 954 983 4948. They would repair mine for 125 dollars + 80 dollars postage, they will send the unit back with your correct milage. They stock most makes of ecu.

Thank you everyone for the replies to my ECU problem.

Second hand Mazda motor 28,000 THB (not sure if the price includes fitting)

I found a company in Bangkok named Arun Electronics who specialises in ECU repairs.

I took the ECU there on the weekend and after diagnosing the problems it only took 15 minutes to repair it at a cost of 4000THB.

He has many in stock, but only for more common makes and models i.e. Toyota, Honda etc

Thanks Ian (Tomtaylor1) but I am glad I could get it fixed locally.

Thanks

Please let us know if, once installed, it solves yur problem. I would stagger a guess that 80% of claims that an ECU is not go are due to the "parts changer" (not mechanic or technician..they dont deserve that title) using a scanner which they dont understand.

I wonder what the original symptoms were. in 10 years I replaced maybe 5 ECu units at my service centre in the UK. one was a grand cherokee, the rest were Renault/peugeot

The scanners (even Snap on) assess the ECU information and supply it to the user in a readable form. but as the old adage goes "garbage in garbage out".

my recommendation is that once you find an ecu repair co, you let the garage do the deal with them and pay them, then if it doesnt fix the problem, its not coming out of your pocket ( yes i know TIT, but its worth a shot).

good luck getting back on the road soon

Hi Crocbait do you have an email address for Arun Electronics and did the persons you dealt with speak english?.

I have a workshop in PNG and send ECU units to NZ for repair with mixed results. Have a U/s IUZ-FE Lexus unit for repair and my try them.

Coincidence with our names.:jap: TC.

My mechanic installed the ECU but the car still wouldn't start. I wasn't there as I had to work, but my wife stayed there all day.

I still haven't found out the cause as my wife really doesn't understand mechanicals so couldn't interpret. But the car is running and back on the road again as of last night.

Scanners...... not used by most mechanics here and there is no Mazda/Ford workshop in my town. Unit was checked out by an electronics repairer I think.

The ECU repairer in BKK also did not use any scanning device, just his multimeter. I was impressed when he actually told me the symptoms that I had when my car broke down.

My local garage was not interested in trying to get the ECU repaired, only in trying to get me to install another motor.........great feasible idea to solve an ECU issue! which is why I researched options and took the unit to BKK to be repaired.

Thanks,

Mike

Hi Topcroc

Yes a bit of a coincidence with the names, I chose mine as I had a lot of encounters with crocs !

My wife has their card, so I will get you the details. The guy was very farang friendly but had only limited English.

Cheers,

well at least it is running. make sure you drive it a LOT for the next few days, watching all your clocks and making sure they all stay in the normal range. on some cars you can "re-introduce" an ECU by disconnecting the battery for a few minutes and assuming the ecu is "downed" too it may have worked. BUT he will have done all that. If, as u say, it DIDNT start at all while u were there, the chances are that he finally found the root problem and fixed it.

driving it a long way now will make sure it doesnt go into "limp mode" which is the " get me home" mode the ECU will often slip into if it starts to get bad info.

I cant remember if the ecu on a ford also contains the immobiliser, i dont think they come standard here anyway, but if it does, thats a main cause of non starts.

glad u rolling again, good luck
