I really have to laugh at their figures for tourism. My wife has a cousin who works for Immigration, although I'm not sure what he does, but his family was here one day and I managed to ask him some questions about how they come up with their figures for tourists. His English is surprisingly good, and here's what he told me.

Everyone getting off a plane in Thailand, who passes through Thai Immigration, even if they are only waiting to board a plane to somewhere else, is counted as a tourist.

Every weekend at the border with Malaysia there are bus loads of people who come to Thailand for a 1 day shopping trip. They are counted as tourists.

Every "border runner", as soon as he comes back into Thailand, is counted as a Tourist.

I can't speak for the rest of the country, but here in Chiang Mai I know of two 5-Star Hotels who have had to close off half their rooms in order to stay open. At one of them they lost all of their Thai Massage girls (6) in one day when they all up and quit. The reason is that a "free massage" is included in the tour package, which is fine, except that the people on the tours never bother to tip the girls, who work for tips and do not have a salary.

I know of two people who had fairly successful booths at the Night Bazaar who had to close due to lack of business.

I see a number of tour bus's that are filled with Asians, but almost never with Westerners. Friends in the tour business say the Asians, mostly Chinese & Korean, are all "packaged" tours, stay only at certain hotels, travel in arranged and managed groups in the mini vans to their destinations, and are extremely cheap.

As mentioned above, there are now countless websites devoted to the scams and ripoffs by Thai on foreigners, not to mention the seemingly increase of deaths, that people are becoming more and more aware of. Those of us who live here do so because we love the country, and the people to some extent, but we also see what Thailand is, and what it COULD be if not for completely misplaced "Thai pride" and a seriously endemic case of "National Stupidity".

TAT can spout all the fictitious numbers they want, and tell the general public anything and will be believed, but the reality is very much the opposite of what they are saying. With all the scams, ripoffs, declining world economy, strong baht, and other contributing factors, Thailand is not the "value for money" they would have people believe.

If the mods will allow it, here's something interesting from the Vietnamese Tourism web site:

nternational visitors to Vietnam in July and 7 months of 2011International visitors to Vietnam in July estimated 460,000 arrivals, increasing by 12.2% over the same period last year. Total international arrivals in 7 months reached 3,425,820 representing a 17.3% growth over the same period of 2010

Their numbers are increasing dramatically, much more so than Thailand's. Why? much better "value for money" for starters, and you don't have all the negatives that Thailand is so well known for.

"Miracle Thailand". ??

It would be a miracle if they got rid of the tuk--tuk and taxi mafia.

It would be a miracle if they cleaned up and regulated the jet ski operators.

It would be a miracle if you could actually get off a plane and not be hounded by 50 touts.

It would be a miracle if you could find a taxi at the airport that actually used their meter, and took you to the hotel you booked and not tell you it "burned down last night" and take you to another where they get a commission for bringing you.

It would be a miracle if you could walk down the streets of Pattaya & Phuket with your family without having porn shoved in your face, including kiddie porn.

It would be a miracle if something happened and you went to the police and they actually did something about it.

The list is endless.

Bottom line, despite all their slogans and advertising, Thailand is NOT tourist friendly anymore they way they once were. Greed and corruption have taken over where short term profits and a "quick buck" far outweigh the long term picture. Where foreigners, especially Western, European and Australians are viewed as "cash cows" to be fleeced in every way possible.

Sad, because there really is a lot to offer to visitors to this country. Unfortunately, the Thai don't have a clue as to the right ways to go about it.

I agree, I went down to some huge waterfall in the area near Trat. The only problem is Thai people got in free and Farangs were 400 baht per person which i thought was outrageous. Luckily i had a student id so i got in free also but there are so many scams in Thailand. Also at Kao Kiaew Zoo in Sriracha there is this ziplining exepedtion called flight of the gibbon. I went with my girlfriend and because she was thai her ticket was like 1200 baht instead of 2500.

Ha ha ha ha :D They set up stricter requirements for the tourist visas , they aim to kill the sex toutism but at the same time they complain about the lack of the rourists.

Thailand wants tourism. It just hates tourists.

Miracle Thailand? Oh c´mon, Corrupted Thailand would sound honest....

Wouldn't TITANIC Thailand be more apt ????????

I might have suggested "Tempting Thailand" or "Tantalizing Thailand" but I think "Miracle Thailand" is straining the imagination.

Personally, I don't go anywhere that has a Farang price but that is a decision every Farang has to make.

what a great post ,. could'nt put it better myself ..........congratulations on that :jap:

Are you all ( who post replies here ) live in Thailand ? I is amazing to see how much hatered most of you have to this place or yuo just like to troll . Don't you want this campain to be a success ?

It is not that we don't want it to be a success... We just want Thailand to be the Best it can be.

We are tired about the constant misuse of the English language, like it doesn't have an international impact on Thailand's reputation.

Outside Thailand, Thailand is laughed at because they use the language improperly... The government should hire the Best, not the cheapest, to check that they have made no errors. It shows a total lack of respect for the Foreigners that they are trying to attract, and leaves them with a very bad impression of uneducated Thais.

And if Thais have no respect for Foreigners, then Foreigners wonder why they should respect Thais & Thailand!

CS

Frommy experience Thai have much respect for someone who respect them - I find manyof the comments in this thread and I many threads on Thavisa almost of a racistapproach . Thais have their own way of doing and thinking and western peoplethink that have better way ( some of them ) why ?

Yes Thais do.... and the same applies in the Reverse.... The use of "Bad" English by the government (or a business advertiser) in a situation directed to attract native speakers of English is a sign of disrespect to them. You get what you give.

To say that "Thais have their own way" and to blame the Culture of Thais and Thailand, is no excuse. If it is "Thai Style" to disrespect Foreigners, then there is something wrong with "Thai Style"! There is a right way and a wrong way... and when a problem exists in a culture, it is time for that culture to evolve. Unfortunately it usually takes a stranger to show when something is wrong, as when you are too close, sometimes a problem is not recognized.

To accuse posters on ThaiVisa of racism is also just a defensive reaction and again a misuse of the English word. We choose to live here among Thai people. Racists look to separate themselves from those they consider to be a lower life form... Like a Hi-So separates himself from a Lo-So.... We live here because we love Asian culture and people. If we didn't we would not stay here. We don't call people with a darker skin than us "Black".

But living here, and loving this place, we are sad to see it present itself to the world in such a xenophobic laughable way. All we would like is for Thais and Thailand to remember that they are a part of a bigger world... Not the center of it!

CS

excuse me for being " picky", but what do YOU call someone with darker skin than you then ? "darky " ?? , coloured ?? , a black friend of mine once said to me " <deleted> you think i am , a rainbow ??.......i know its not easy today with all this PC Crap , but you have to call a spade a spade ....so to speak , ........if a danishman in a dane, a swedish person a swede , a thai person a thai, i cant understand what the pakistanis are complaining about , why is it so acceptable to call the french "frogs" ?? ,.....looking forward to some feedback if the mods dont think its off topic :ermm:

Out of 8 bn, 1 bn will be eaten up by the person who signs this approval, 4 bn shared amongst the people who asked for the approval, 2 bn for those who buy gifts and offerings to the people in TAT, 1 bn in advertising campaigns mostly shown in Thailand so that Thais know their 8bn was put to good use. Money does make miracles, but it does not end corruption.

First of All.... I call a person with Darker skin then me by their "Name"!

Secondly, the Non-color "Black" is the color of the letters in the type on this page... NO one on Earth has "Black" skin.. the same as no one has "Black" eyes....

All skins tones are shades of Dark to Light Brown.. Ranging from Dark Chocolate or Coffee.. through Olive or Tanned.. to Pink or Peach... An Albino being the Lightest. Dark-skinned, tanned skin, light skinned are Acceptable.

Finally, identifying a person by their Nationality is acceptable in this "Politically Divided World" we have created... But identifying someone by their skin color is usually a derogatory and racist expression, used historically to separate and segregate a person from others. It is Offensive and Divisive, even if that person is your "Best-Friend". Why don't you ask them if they like it?

It is impolite and no more acceptable than calling someone "Fat" rather then Heavy or Over-weight. People only use Expressions with Negative connotations to hurt or put those people down. Friends don't insult friends. And there is no need to insult others unless you want to make them your enemy, or you feel Superior to them. And to me, calling me White is just as Racist as Calling my friend Black, or a Black-American.

Hyphenated-Nationalism is also Divisive and Racist by definition... as is any term used to identify a person for the strict purpose of segregating one group from another would be. Just ask a "Black" or "Asian" in 20th century South Africa, a "German-Jew" in Nazi-Germany, a "Japanese-American" during WWII, a "Negro-American" in the 60's or a "Native-American" and a "Muslim-American" of today... or a "Gweilow" in Hong Kong, a "Gaigin" in Tokyo, or a "Farang" in Thailand. None of these are acceptable. All are Racist. Also NOT Acceptable are Insulting Slang expressions like: "Frog", "Polack", "Kraout" "Slant-Eyes", "Jap", "Nigger", "Mick" or "Kike", etc. If you think they are, then go to Paris and start calling every French-person a "Frog".. You will quickly be "frog-marched" right into a situation you would be best to have avoided.

The only acceptable exceptions to Racial-Identifiers would be in case of a Medical situation where there is a difference in metabolism and a diagnosis may differ according to racial DNA, or in a Legal situation, where "Racial-Profiling" saves needlessly wasting time, expense or suffering.

So, not to call a kettle "Black", and to End this discussion, I will call anyone that uses Insulting, Derogatory, and Race or Religious based identifiers, a Racist.

And there is Nothing "P.C." about that!

CS

Try spending that 8 billion baht on your infrastructure! What crappy roads this place has. But I sure appreciated being asked to donate 100 baht while our van was given the once over by Thailand's finest men in brown searching for Cambodians. The poor lads wanted coffee. Lovely, place. jap.gif

It is a "Miracle" if you can get in and out without getting ripped off, robbed, or looked at like some 3rd class citizen.

"Hey falang" isn't a greeting. It is an insult.

Thailand wants tourism. It just hates tourists.

Very, very well said.

"Thailand NEEDS a Miracle" !!! agree 100% >

nobody thought Thaksin and Sondhi would be back on the same page, except me, miracle worker Sanan,

ANYthing is possible,

mebbe the bad rub???,, it's an improper phrase!!!

[Miraculous Thailand] {Copy Right, would slide down the hatch a bit better.

Sorry... How about Calling you 'White' is a racist identification... just as much as calling a dark Skin person a 'Black'.

A dark-skinned person no more has a Black skin, then you have a White-skin.

Pink is a color, same as Blue, Yellow, Orange, Brown, Beige, Olive, Coffee, Milky, Fusia and Skin-tone.

Seems to me that Pink is the color just a few tones lighter then your neck!

And there is certainly nothing P.C. about That!

The campaign slogan is not very catchy. On another thread- In regards to you folks giving all the mirthful lip-service about the 4 billion. If you actually knew what you were talking about you would no doubt have disdainfully sited a couple of generally much lower historical figures for tourist campaign budgets. Typical- No real knowledge- just blah, blah, blah.

CS

Interesting, I have never seen a Pink person, although whites are often called that, me included, so what is Pink ??, or is this too PC for you ??

And there is certainly nothing P.C. about That!

CS

Are you referring to the sunburned area between the hairline and collar?:whistling:

I assume the Vatican has been informed.

Confirmed.

Maybe they could issue a Miracle Elite card to match the year....

The new government is also hoping to boost tourism income to Bt2 trillion per year by 2016.

Gosh, that's terrific. That amount is nearly to the entire governmental budget expenses for 2012.

The Yingluck Cabinet, this afternoon, approved the budget of 2.33 Trillion Baht (with a planned deficit of 350 Billion Baht) for 2012.

2012 to be declared ‘Miracle Thailand Year’

BANGKOK, 28 January 2012 (NNT) - The Ministry of Tourism and Sports has expressed its readiness to promote tourism in the country with a series of exciting activities this year.

In line with the government policy to make 2012 the Miracle Thailand Year, the Ministry will start drumming up the campaign in March with PR activities on Songkran Festival. The Tourism Authority of Thailand will be responsible for the arrangement of the activities.

Loads of fun-filled events will be held throughout the year including a concert by world-renowned musician Yanni at one of the country’s landmarks, and weekend One-Tambon-One-Product fairs on Ratchadamnoen Road.

To make this year’s theme widely known, the word ‘Miracle’ will be included when it comes to naming tourism campaigns and festivals in all provinces.

The duration of those events and their scales of organization will also be extended in a bid to boost local economies.nntlogo.jpg

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) will ask the government for Bt8.4 billion to finance its new 2011-2012 tourism campaign, "Miracle Thailand".

they ended up getting nearly that much...

Government budgets Bt6.3 billion for 'Miracle Year' tourism campaign

The government has earmarked Bt6.34 billion for the "Miracle Thailand Year 2012" campaign set to start in March, the Tourism and Sports Ministry says.

A source at the Tourism Ministry said it would fund the budget along with the Agriculture and Culture ministries and the Prime Minister's Office. The Tourism Ministry's share is Bt5.4 billion, including Bt4.8 billion from the Tourism Authority of Thailand.

TAT, the Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau and tourism associations will work together on the details of the campaign.

Tourism Minister Chumpol Silapa-archa said yesterday that the campaign would develop key cultural events such as the Songkran festival, Thailand Grand Sales, the Candle Festival and Loy Krathong as world-class events. For example, the length of such events could be extended from a week to month, as well as expanding single areas to tourism clusters.

Meanwhile relevant ministries will join forces to organise new events to stimulate spending by local and foreign visitors. The Tourism and Agriculture ministries plan to make Ratchadamnoen Nok Avenue a walking street to sell One Tambon One Product items and feature artistic performances. TAT will also be responsible for creating events related to highlighted products in each district in key tourist destinations.

However, not everyone in the tourism business is enthusiastic about the scheme in and of itself.

Sisdhivachr Chevarattanaporn, president of the Association of Thai Travel Agents, called for a long-term plan from the government to ensure the sustainability of Thai tourism and the travel industry.

"Creating world events luring tourist arrivals is not enough for long-term business. Promotion plans for strengthening local tourism enterprises and incentive plans for overseas investors should be among the first priorities," Sisdhivachr said.

Recently 17 countries issued travel warnings and advisories against visiting Thailand after the US government posted a warning about a terrorism threat in Bangkok. Chumpol said China, Germany, France and Israel had since lifted their advisories.

He added that the ministry would write to the US Embassy in Bangkok by next week calling for the lifting of the warning, which has had an impact on the Thai tourism industry.

.

How about investing the money into flood and water management. "Does TAT not have anything better to do than polishing up their self image?

"Miracle Thailand Card for the Miracle Journey in Thailand"

Do they seriously pay people money to come up with slogans like this?

Offered as part of a campaign entitled, "Miracle Thailand Card for the Miracle Journey in Thailand", the card is valid for use from now until December 31, 2012. This will make it perfect for those planning to do their shopping for the Christmas and New Year period while in Thailand.

The New Year period extends to slightly past the 31st of December, I would think ?
