gharknes Posted November 2, 2005 Posted November 2, 2005 since I've been out of pattaya for 6 months and arrived recently - is it my imagination or are there twice as many baht taxis, it just seems there are far too many to support the potential customer base, they are everywhere, sitting around doing nothing or moving with 1 or 2 passengers at most, seems they have flooded the market, doesn't the local council regulate licences etc. All they seem to do is cause congestion. comments?
raro Posted November 2, 2005 Posted November 2, 2005 yes, you are right. After all these years I still do not understand Thai market self-regulation either.
hopeless Posted November 2, 2005 Posted November 2, 2005 Does anyone know of the plan to scrap the bhat buses? I read in one of the papers they were looking into mini buses or something.
Veritas Posted November 2, 2005 Posted November 2, 2005 Does anyone know of the plan to scrap the bhat buses? I read in one of the papers they were looking into mini buses or something. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I remember they were planning to scrap them, but I hope they don't. They are a major part of the character of the town and they work well. Scrapping them would be like scrapping the traditional London buses, unthinkable There are too many of them at the moment though, but since when has anything been regulated properly in Pattaya ? britmaveric Posted November 3, 2005 Posted November 3, 2005 (edited) Patters tried the big motor coach - I hear it rides empty!!! Baht buses are convenient and cheap. They won't be going anywhere - so guess we have to deal with the congestion. Edited November 3, 2005 by britmaveric
Pattaya_Fox Posted November 3, 2005 Posted November 3, 2005 Long live the baht bus!! You`d soon be moaning if you had to wait 15 minutes for transport instead of a few seconds in many cases...as brit says they are convenient and cheap. Try the tuk tuks in Phuket...you`ll soon come to appreciate the baht bus service.
mrbojangles Posted November 3, 2005 Posted November 3, 2005 Long live the baht bus!! I concur. And the fact there are so many means it's easy to get one. If i'm down Soi 8 or somewhere, me and the Mrs jump into an empty one and they take us back to Jomtien (no stopping for passengers) for 100baht. I know we could do it for 20baht each but it's worth it, not to stop. I love em, though i do wish Patters had some Tuk Tuk's, as well.

CGW Posted November 3, 2005 Posted November 3, 2005 The powers that be have been trying to get rid of Baht buses for twenty years, but the "Mafia" that controls them is to powerful! Get rid of the lot! South Pattaya to Jomtien 100 Baht, same distance in Bangkok would cost less in a Air Con Taxi. Over the years the Baht buses have caused "numerous deaths and untold amount of injuries, personaly I hate em! Tuk Tuks - hate them as well! Cheers

Oh and by the way if you get your baht bus on the baht bus route to Jomtiem you will have to pay only 5 baht (or 10 baht if you are generous.)

Beep beep. Have a nice day

I shudder to think what that would cost in UK...
fxm88 Posted November 3, 2005 Posted November 3, 2005 I was confused about this too until I asked and got set straight. Apparently these guys are clockin' ducats big time! Between 15000 to 20000 a month profit. http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=41424
CGW Posted November 3, 2005 Posted November 3, 2005 I have to concur with the learned gentleman who so rightfully states they should be cleared off the streets of Pattaya at the first opportunity, they are a menace to society. Using them as a additional seawall, where one is desperatly needed at the far end of Jomtien would be a splendid idea! and would also serve as a tourist attraction. Cheers

davethailand Posted November 3, 2005 Posted November 3, 2005 Is'nt it funny that when people first come to pattaya they rave about how cheap it is? THEN after a while they complain about paying over 10bht for a baht bus... Tight <deleted>. Compare these prices to back home along with the guy that drives you tight <deleted> about everywhere for not peanuts.

Mighty Mouse Posted November 3, 2005 Posted November 3, 2005 The baht buses are great but they would be greater if they drove around silently. Does honking the horn really get them any extra business? They should only use the horn to warn pedestrians that they have no intention of stopping for them as they attempt to cross Second Road.
