High-End Adsl Routers With Watchdog Feature ?

Hi All,

I am looking for a ADSL Router to replace my old router.

Biggest issue I have is the router hanging itself up. This happens usually

when TOT runs tests on the line, or just generally messes with the line ...

At this time I have to physically power cycle the ADSL router to get the

line back. This creates a problem when I am not at home. I can't

access my security system and security cameras.

So I am looking for an advanced router, that has some sort of a watchdog

function, which would reset the entire router if it can not ping some remote

destination, or can otherwise establish that the line is down. It should continue

resetting the router in certain intervals until the link is back up ...

Any ideas suggestion ?

(My current router is a Azteck, I tried TP-Link, and I know the standard Zylinx

ones have the same issues).

Thanks,

rudi

ADSL/Cable modems or integrated modems/routers naturally try to reestablish a connection with the DSLAM and the ISP's IP servers when the connection is lost. Sounds like you may have a funky modem/router or physical line problems with your TOT line (i.e., funky SNR, etc). But I do know that sometimes resetting the modem/router does indeed fix things like you have been doing.

Now, when a modem/router does reestablish a connection with or without power cycling, equipment like maybe a VOIP adapter or security cameras may not automatically make a proper IP connection with the router which could require power cycling of those devices hooked to the router. Depends on the equipment. A person almost needs a watch dog feature on all the equipment, not just the modem/router, to ensure a proper/complete internet connection of all the equipment.

I had the same problem with my modem / router that used to stop me from viewing the DVR over the internet. Easiest solution was to plug the modem into a cheap timer plug that automatically switched off once a day for a couple of minutes.

I would not buy a cheap timer plug they are one of the worst item's to go on fire buy a good one.

there are these cheap digital watch switches (don't know how such a device is called in English).

You can either daily or just every second day or once a week automatically switch it off for 1 min.

might be the easiest solution.

Cheap in comparision to a new modem / router. Stop being pedantic.

Check out dd-wrt.com and compatible dd-wrt models such as asus rt-n16 (Around 4000 baht).

There must be somethings or an add-on that would reset router when ping fails, I remember such thing but I can't find it in my tomatousb firmware, perhaps it is still available in dd-wrt firmware.
