CrazyFrog Posted November 10, 2005 Posted November 10, 2005 Hi Guys! I'm looking for bars who have great rock music like Pink Floyd, Scorpions, Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin etc. I know about Hard Rock Cafe in Bkk but the place is very small and the stage is realy not placed well! I went also to Musik Cafe in Silom Area! When there's a rock band, that's great! But without bands, we're fallin in popular music. I'm passing offently in front of Beer Garden near Ekkamai Sky Train station if I'm right but never ben there! So if someone knows about a good place to go for this kind of music it will be very appreciate! Thanks Guys! CrazyFrog
davethailand Posted November 10, 2005 Posted November 10, 2005 The Rock Pub opposite the Asia Hotel Hopefully another board member can tell you the name of the BTS outside the door as i've forgotten.
ronz28 Posted November 10, 2005 Posted November 10, 2005 Rock Pub Ratchatwewi BTS Station opposite side of the street from Asia Hotel. It was too loud for us to stay very long.
CrazyFrog Posted November 10, 2005 Author Posted November 10, 2005 Ok! Thanks Guys! I'll go take a look! That's not Heavy Metal music in there? CrazyFrog
davethailand Posted November 10, 2005 Posted November 10, 2005 There is of course that Morrison guy who plays in Pattaya
PanzerJohn Posted November 10, 2005 Posted November 10, 2005 (edited) There's a really good heavy rock band plays in 5 Star bar in Soi Cowboy. Bamboo bar Sukh soi 3(Nana Nua) has some good bands. Walking Street, Pattaya has 3 exellent venues, all within a couple of minutes walk of each other in Walking Street. Of course theres the Blues Factory home of the venerable Lam Morrison, then The Climax Bar has, IMHO, one the best guitarists in Thailand, the amazing Piam, and Hot Tuna a bit further up has an exellent house band as well. Theres a good website, Bangkok Gig Guide, that has lots of useful info. Edited November 10, 2005 by PanzerJohn
ProfessorFart Posted November 10, 2005 Posted November 10, 2005 The best place for metal is TQ2 in Pattaya! The DJ is a sulky t**t but will play your choice all night long if you bung him a beer or two!! The gaffer of the Immortal bar (in the Bayon Buildong just past NatII Guest House) on Khao San Road is a metalhead and they used to have metal nights there but recently it all seemed to be hip hop and techno crap to keep the Nigerian asylum seekers and funky backpackers happy. God knows why he has such turgid music which can be found all over that area on, when hes a rocker and so are most of his mates but there you have it. He does change his policy quite a bit so you should head down there early on a Friday night and look for the Thai guy with long dreads called Fah and ask him where its at as he will point you in the right direction if he doesn't have any rock going on. As rock/metal is pretty much underground in Bangkok, ask Fah if there are any gigs going on. His own band Plahn play fairly regularly and when you get metal gigs in BKK they tend to be long affairs with plenty of other bands on. BTW If you speak fluent Sepultura you'll make a friend for life as well. He's a sound guy but can be a little shy at first. Attending metal gigs a good way (if not the only way) to get into the metal scene in Bangkok. As a Westerner you'll quickly make a lot of contacts and once in the loop you'll find it hard to drop out. Chat to people and pass out your email address to those in the know. Problem is that rock is still eyed with suspicion from the powers that be who see it as subversive, so is still pretty much underground apart from the Metal Zone (usually awful but can be OK at times and always expensive) and the aforementioned Rock Pub where Lam Morrison plays every now and again. The Rock Pub is also hit and miss but is more hit than miss in my opinion.
CrazyFrog Posted November 11, 2005 Author Posted November 11, 2005 I'm realy not looking for Heavy Metal bars! What I'm looking for is realy like old Rock of the 70's, 80's like Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Scorpions and bands like that! I'm looking for these kind of places in Bkk area! Thanks!
ProfessorFart Posted November 11, 2005 Posted November 11, 2005 Woodstock would have been your place but alas its now no longer. Theres rumour it will reappear somewhere else soon but I've not heard anything. One hears this kind of stuff all over especially in naughty bars for some reason but not because of any specific music policy.
snakestick Posted November 11, 2005 Posted November 11, 2005 I'm realy not looking for Heavy Metal bars! What I'm looking for is realy like old Rock of the 70's, 80's like Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Scorpions and bands like that! I'm looking for these kind of places in Bkk area! Thanks! <{POST_SNAPBACK}> It's getting harder and harder to find good tunes around, my friend. I have been to several bars and stormed out very pissed off when they shoved Eminem in my face at hi volume. It seems that many places do knot care what the customer wants to hear. It seems that the jack wipe DJs play there own favs or cater to the girls working in the bar. Here is a list of bars that I will knot go to anymore after having rap and hip hop smeared in my face on a multitude of occasions even after several complaint to DJs and management/owners. I've had it with this list of bars. I advise avoiding them if you like Floyd, Zep etc and despise hip hop rap eminem horseshit. Do Not Go to: 1. Gullivers <deleted> DJs repeat the same offensive Eminem songs 2 or more times nightly at deafening volume. I complained to the DJ once and he laughed at me. I responded by spitting on him. I stormed out and have not returned 2. Bush Gardens Same horseshit over and over every night at eardrum popping volume. Complaints to DJ and owner do nothing. I got fed up one night and told them both to <deleted> ck themselves during the 5th playng of the same Eminem song that night. I threw my checkbin money at him and never returned. I used to spend an average of 1000 baht/day there for 2 years and that's the thanks I got. I will say that the greatest moment I had there in 2 years was the day that my friend accessed the bar's DVD player and found an Eminem CD inside. We took it outside and set fire to it 3. Hard Rock Cafe...Suprise Surprise. Paid cover for my gf and me and the live band is none other than a hip hop band, idiot with sideways cap and all. I ###### near puked and bolted right quick. 4. Bullys Pub....not a lot of comments. not nearly as bad as gulliver and Bush but best avoid 5. M bar....really really bad. same owner as Bush, same offensive rap hip hop Eminem shit. Avoid like the plague 6. The bar on Sukhumvit btw Soi 7 and Soi 5. Cant think of name right now but you know the place. Same owner as Bush and M bar. Same SHIT . Avoid avoid avoid. They hate their customers. If anyone would like to set up a rap, hip hop, Eminem CD burning bash, I'd like to arrange it. All items of rap, hip hop, Eminem welcome to be put into the ceremonial fire. OK now your list of Rock Bars off the top of my head that are safe to go. 1. Country Roads: have a decent band. I heard them cranking out Paranoid by Black Sabbath, sounded pretty damned good. Soi 15? 2. Morning Night Soi 4 Nana. Always hear good rocking stuff cranking from there. sounding good. Zep, Floyd, Stones, AC/DC etc 3. Long /gun Soi Cowboy...been a while but the tunes over there were good before, hopefully no changes 4. Hilary Bar Soi 4. good tunes eminating from there the other night...Maggie May, Marvin Gaye In conclusion; be careful out there. DO NOT patronize bars that despise their customers by playing the offensive rap, hip hop Eminem dogshit. DO NOT give them your hard earned money. Don't tolerate it, just WTFO (walk the f uck out)
davethailand Posted November 11, 2005 Posted November 11, 2005 The DJ is a sulky t**t No different than your average DJ then?
kurgen Posted November 11, 2005 Posted November 11, 2005 Snakestick,I'm not surprised you don't go back to Gullivers if you spat on the DJ. I bet you're sorely missed
davethailand Posted November 11, 2005 Posted November 11, 2005 I responded by spitting on him. I stormed out and have not returned Your lucky you did'nt get your arse kicked down the street Snakestick. (make sure you don't upset my DJ)
CrazyFrog Posted November 11, 2005 Author Posted November 11, 2005 What about the Rock Pub near Asia Hotel! I don't wanna hear too much heavy stuff! Metallica at least is my limit! I want a bar with good ambience with cool Rock music! There was a Bar in Montreal named Woodstock! Beleive Me, the music was excellent! Should have a bar like that here! It can be a bussiness opportunity in Thailand! Anyways! That's seriously bad to don't find a cool place with good music! So many people don't know about the real music! Thanks guys! I will note the bars to avoid! CrazyFrog

CrazyFrog Posted November 11, 2005 Author Posted November 11, 2005 Can be possible that there's some but hard to find for someone who don't know about it! I took a look at the list that snakestick posted! In Nana Soi 4, I know these places but don't like too much the area! I'm mostly looking for a kind of bar like the style of the Irish pub in Silom Area! Like the Rock Pub, I've got some infos who's saying that it's heavy metal music and other comments that it's not! So I considere that **Hard to find**! Anyways! I'm here for minimum a year so I'll find if there's some good bars like I'm looking for! Thanks for All guys! CrazyFrog
davethailand Posted November 11, 2005 Posted November 11, 2005 Bangkok is a big place, look around. The music your looking for is played in every bloody beer bar in Thailand. I personally can't stand the Irish pubs in BKK. each to their own.
CrazyFrog Posted November 11, 2005 Author Posted November 11, 2005 Davethailand! Are You able to name some bars that the music style I'm looking for is played? It will be very appreciated! CrazyFrog
davethailand Posted November 11, 2005 Posted November 11, 2005 In BKK i'm not sure to be honest as said most beer bars, small bar bands only play stuff like that.
ProfessorFart Posted November 11, 2005 Posted November 11, 2005 I want a bar with good ambience with cool Rock music! There was a Bar in Montreal named Woodstock! Beleive Me, the music was excellent! Should have a bar like that here! There was a bar like that until recently as I said in Nana Plaza and they tore it down to make way for a go go bar! In fairness it had no so much slid downhill but plumetted ever since Andy (? I'm awful with names but he was a Brit from Notts) left. Memories remain forever though. There is talk about a new Woodstock being built elsewhere on Sukhumwit but for me a part of its appeal was that it was a safe haven amidst the chaos. A big shout goes out for Morning Night bar (which I'd forgotten all about until I saw Snakestick's post - you want to lighten up a little mate but I do know how you feel!) which plays anything from the Stones through to Metallica. The only minus is that they have a bog bloke and the girls can be a little irksome! Its a great place to sit and watch the world go by if you are lucky enough to get a street view!! If not go in anyway and wait til a space appears!
raggedjagged Posted November 11, 2005 Posted November 11, 2005 How about any places with newer rock music? Not nu-metal, but stuff like System of a down, disturbed, korn(i don't consider them to be exactly nu-metal), lamb of god, etc..I'm pretty sure no such place exists where they play that kind of music, but just in case someone knows, it would be good. I actually would love it most if there was a gothic scene in bangkok and venues that played gothic metal music, but I guess the chances of that happen in Bangkok are as much as the chances of it snowing here. I'm one of them who'se particularly sick and tired of hearing hiphop and rap being spewed around the entire city.
ProfessorFart Posted November 11, 2005 Posted November 11, 2005 Ragged Jagged. See my earlier reply and try the Immortal Bar route. The only place I have heard this kind of stuff as a part of a music policy is TQ2 in Pattaya and even then you may have to ask for it. Even places with a 'rock' policy tend to stick to 'safer' kinds of music like Ozzy, Aerosmith, AC/DC etc
stevehaigh Posted November 12, 2005 Posted November 12, 2005 The world greatest progressive rock band, Dream Theater, is comming to the Impact Arena Exhibition and Convention in BKK on Jan 25th. I doubt most of you have heard of Dream Theater. They sound a lot like Yes/Genesis/Rush/Pink Floyd. I HIGHLY recommend you get their latest CD, Octavarium. Listen to it a thousand times then go the the show on Jan 25th. see http://dreamtheater.net/tourdates.php This will likely be your only chance to see one of the worlds greatest bands in LOS. steve

Nickkbh Posted November 13, 2005 Posted November 13, 2005 Country Road on soi 19,the late band is good. The band in 5 star on cowboy, really good band tight sound. For some more bluesy rock,go to tokyo joes,on soi 24. I can vouch for all 3 places, and jam there regularly. And have yet to hear eminem in either place.
CrazyFrog Posted November 13, 2005 Author Posted November 13, 2005 Nickkbh! Thanks for the infos! I realy appreciate it and will visit these places for sure! CrazyFrog
CrazyFrog Posted November 13, 2005 Author Posted November 13, 2005 Hi Guys! About the bar Country Road, is possible that there's another location than the one in Soi 19? Thanks! CrazyFrog
Nickkbh Posted November 13, 2005 Posted November 13, 2005 well, there is also one in soi cowboy, but i prefer the one in soi 19.
davethailand Posted November 13, 2005 Posted November 13, 2005 You need to come to pattaya crazy frog. Easyriders. hot tuna Climax Bar. and literally a hundred other bands scattered around.
CrazyFrog Posted November 14, 2005 Author Posted November 14, 2005 Pattaya! I will go for sure one day! But for now, I have to go on Koh Mak for few days! On the way back, I will probably stop to take a look! Thanks! CrazyFrog
