Egg Prices Skyrocket Up To 7 Baht Each

Egg Prices Skyrocket Up to 7 Baht per Egg

Throngs of people queued up to purchase and stock vast quantities of eggs for food, as floodwaters swamped over many chicken farms across Thailand, causing the egg prices to skyrocket up to 7 baht per egg, the highest ever recorded.

This year’s flood calamity resulted in a drastic price increase for all consumer products, especially eggs categorized as “Number 2” type eggs. Normal egg prices before the flood crisis struck remained at 95 baht per pack but now it sells for 105 baht per pack where one pack contains about 30 eggs. However, some merchants chose to take advantage in this predicament by selling eggs at a ludicrous price of 180-200 baht per pack and sold one egg at 6-7 baht each.

Nongphanga Kochada, a shop owner who sells eggs distributed from Yusoong Company at Sriracha, Chonburi Province, stated that as of now, there have been purchasing restrictions placed on eggs. Frequent customers at her shop will be able to buy no more than 3 packages of eggs. The reason for expensive pricing belies in the decreased supply of eggs being distributed in the market due to the flood that has drowned many chickens. Hence, there have been not enough eggs to satisfy consumer demand as well.

Nongphanga also stated that nowadays, eggs classified as “Number 0” type eggs sell at 111 baht per pack; “Number 1”type eggs sell at 108 baht per pack; “Number 2” type eggs sell at 105 baht per pack; “Number 3” type eggs sell at 102 baht per pack; “Number 4” type eggs sell at 99 baht per pack; “Number 5” type eggs sell at 84 baht per pack, and finally, “Number 6” type eggs sell at 69 baht per pack. It is also interesting to note that eggs that have a smaller numeric value are actually bigger in size than eggs that have a high numeric value.

Chanchai Chotipan, a frequent customer, stated that the flooding depleted the supply of eggs being sold especially at convenience stores. Even worse off is that in the future, a lot of these stores will no longer be able to sell eggs for consumers. Hence, he is doing whatever he can to reserve as many eggs and drinking water that is quickly out of stock as well. He voiced out concern about the government’s ability to handle the flood aftermath, as no government has ever caused the prices of eggs to skyrocket this high.

Please stay inline with government regulations and announce the price per kilo instead of per piece.:D How much a Kg is 7 baht a piece.

As for the other dream that No 2 eggs normally sell at 95 Baht per pack of 30, I have never been able to buy at even near that price, unless maybe 10 years ago.

The vision of an omlette made from a number 2 egg almost made me vomit. :bah:

News Flash: The US Aircraft Carrier and associated fleet have turned around and are heading back to Thailand to urgently transport by helicopter, 5 million chicken water wings. Uh oh, I just realized, fresh eggs sink...darn.

They should sell them by the kilo. That will solve the problem.

To make an omelet, you've got to crack some schmegeggies ...

Well, that explains the 27,000 posts  .

Maybe Thai pricing:)

They can keep their eggs.

That will teach them to try and scam the plain people.

absolutely common sense if only they were shipped to department stores put on shelves for sale....

<br />Surely Duck eggs should be down in price <img src='http://static.thaivisa.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/default/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' /> <br /><br /><br />

I suggest tv start a 2011 flood-barter page in lieu of the shortages.

I'll start-i have 2 dozen eggs willing to trade for 40 litres of drinking water.

Somebody said they had 1400 dvds the other day, willing to trade all of my wifes 200 books straight up for those-delivery not included!

You must live in a city.

Out here in the countryside not a lot changes.

A while ago I jokingly asked one of the ladies who sell eggs for a kilo of eggs and she almost fell off the chair laughing. I was laughing a lot as I asked the question.

Just because some government minister gets a law made on a piece of paper doesn't mean to say that anybody takes any notice of it.

My wife is going to the market this afternoon and I will get her to check the prices and availability.

Those prices are saved for Issan. You could buy them a few months ago for 95 baht for 30. They maybe higher if they sell them in BKK for more.
