I am looking for a used Toyota 4wd. I have a Sports Rider 1998 modelalready, which I bought for about 500k back in 2008. I am now looking for asimilar kind. There’s a 2001 SportsRider going for 350k at a dealership in CM. Does this sound like a good price? It’s done about 150,000 km (is that a lot? I have no idea about cars). How reliable is the mileage that they tell you? AsI once heard that this means nothing because they can always change thefigures.

We use if for our business and cover a lot of miles in the MaeHong Sonand Chiang Rai regions.

Cheers,

You are in the best position you already have the same model thats presumably from your post done a lot of Kms so test driving the 2001 you should be able to tell wether it's done less than your present one, if it drives the same is there any point in getting a 3 year newer one thats probably done the same Kms which is my anwer to your question how reliable is the milage on a 10 year old 350K vehicle , driving, origionality is the key not a speedo reading.

I guess you are right, we are in a good position because we can get a feel for how this 2001 model drives compared to our 1998 one - good point

Sorry I'm not sure what you mean 'if it drives the same is there any point in getting a 3 year newer one thats probably done the same Kms '

Basically because of increased business, we now need 2 cars as we have more clients

but I do wonder, if it maybe worth spending more on a newer model, so that it will last longer in the future, (instead of having two 10yr old cars clap out on us at the same time)

Most of the used Toyota 4wds I've seen though, are not newer than 2002

cheers,

Ooops sorry. No its not the only model we have to use, I know nothing about cars, so i guess its bcos we had a good experience with the sportsrider we have already, and we like it maybe cos we are used to it

Open to other model types too! Yes it definitely needs to be 4WD and 7 seats. Flexible on everything else. If there is such as thing as a 4wD with 8-9 seats even better!

We take tourists around

As I said I don't know much about cars, so thats all the info I have ? thanks again,

The Toyota Sportrider (Hilux Surf) is the SUV version of the old Toyota Hilux Tiger, so the logical step is the SUV version of a newer design pickup (these are known in Thailand as PPV's - Pickup-based Passenger Vehicles).

If you're looking to buy something more recent and reliable than the Sportrider (or new), here's what you should be looking into: Isuzu MU-7, Ford Everest, Toyota Fortuner and Mitsubishi Pajero Sport.

Of those, the MU-7 is the biggest, and has the best 3rd row space.

The Ford Everest is arguably second for overall interior space. It's due for replacement somtime next year by a model that will take it leaps and bounds forward (but good runout deals to be expected when the new model approaches).

The Fortuner and Pajero Sport are the most popular PPV's in Thailand, but both are a little smaller inside, and 3rd row not as big/comfy as the previous two.

More recent model Fortuners (2008+) feature full-time 4WD and are thirstier on diesel when on the road. However they also feature stability control, if safety is a priority.

The Pajero Sport has the best ride comfort, and is easily the best off-roader out of the bunch (it has won 4WD PPV of the year every year since it's release), but like the Fortuner, the 3rd row is really only comfortable for people around 5'6" or less.

Chevrolet also have their first entry into the market (Trailblazer) launching early next year, if you're considering something new. Not much is known about it yet though.

The one big advantage something newer will give you is the ability to buy 1st-class insurance - most Thai insurers don't want to touch something > 6 years old - but you've probably already hit that one (and perhaps found a flexible insurer?) :D
