Strange Cravings For The Old Country

Featured Replies

I've been in Thailand, content as all get out for six years with one visit home in that period. Today I had the strangest desire to go back for the Seattle Sail Boat Show which I hit a few times in the past. Quite odd to get this compelling desire to go back. Wondering if others have odd afflictions for travel back home and what those fantasies might be.......

I have this strange desire to go back to collect my inheritance. Unfortunately nobody wants to give it to me.

Even the government has gotten selfish and won't give real Aussies the old age pension (not that I'm old enough for it yet), they reckon they've gotta save it for all the refugees that have found their way to Australian shores.

At this time of the year I sometimes have a desire to go back (UK), put on a set of waterproofs and walking boots and take a canalside walk in the cold drizzling rain.

Funny you mention that. The boat show was usually in the spring when a cold wind with rain would be blowing through. We had to go into the Hooters on the dock there at Union Bay often to have a beer and warm up!

They will give it to you Blinky, unless you have your money not properly hidden away, but you have to live in Australia for two years after getting it to re-establish your residency.

Some people I know are planning to put this to the test soon, it doesn't appear it will stand up to a court challenge. B)

So don't let your hopes die yet little Blinks, all that tax we paid could come home to Poppa yet.

I was thinking I might go back at Chinese New Year and try and catch Edinburgh Eagles in the first round of the Challenge Cup, but finances will not allow.

I could fair go a haggis supper, though, with lashings of brown sauce. I had a scotch egg in the pub last night.

Hey, quite a while ago we were talking about Diggers Pub on another thread. Did you ever make it back there? Great place.

I've not been back. Patsy was going to check in for us, but she never had time, last Christmas, and I think Smokie is heading back for a night out first quarter next year. Apparently the jam tarts are up for grabs, so I reckon he might be able to pick them up in a special deal if he buys a big round of heavy.

I did some research on the internet, and apparently its still there

I believe that most of my friends left in Auld Reekie are Easter Roadmen, but I'll ask anyway; I doubt derbyday is the best day to go

SC

by the way, the map's rubbish; its right on the corner, at the gusset of Angle Park Terrace and Henderson Terrace.

It used to be closed until 5 pm on a Saturday (and, quite possibly, every other day) so there would be a queue formed outside after the football.

but where is the 'old country'?...things quickly become so much part of the past that it's hard to make a judgement anymore regarding stuff that is missed or craved for...one just knows what one useta like in various circumstances...

a good midterm exam result in engineering school...a cottage cheese taco in beat surroundings in Venice, CA...sunday lunch at home on a winter's day in the UK East Midlands...'une madeleine...'

OK - I got a reply already on Diggers' condition

"

Same as it ever was but with more tv's.

Not sure how he recognised you all; unless tv's is short for transvestites. Which seems unlikely in Diggers'.

Gillespies' Oatmeal Stout

Deuchars' IPA

Lorne sausge

SC

I knew a girl called Lorne once - she was lovely... and certainly not square.

yeah...that square sausage my MiL useta get up in Glasgow fer breakfast was a killer along with the bacon and the black pudding, eggs, toast and strong tea...grand...

was the girl's name pronounced Lorn or Lornah like in Lorna Doone?...there was a brand of short bread cookies in the US, etc (see the scene in Alex Cox's 'Repo Man')...there was a tartan on the package that the cookies came in...

I knew a girl called Lorne once - she was lovely... and certainly not square.

Was she French?..... if so, we need to talk.

I had a first cousin (one of dozens) named Lorna in Bolivia who I knew in the 60s...she was very dark and had large breasts and an incestuous inclination...

tutsi remained chaste only to have it off with her sister nearly 20 years later when settling my mother's affairs after her gruesome and tragic death near the steps of the church of the Jesuits in the plazuela Colon in a small town in the Andes...them cousins were relentless, libidinous and low class...

Its mental torture this thread is. I'm missing my fingers going blue on my early morning trip to the bakers....the roar ay the crowd when arbroath score....fishin' for crabs on a Saturday morning...walking along the cliffs with my dog....the butterflies...sparrows...smelling the rose bush in the garden....and the silence at night.

the silence at night is always a nice one...in Pasadena, CA there was a railway crossing not too far from our house and there was a train noise (toot on the horn) every night at the same time and when I heard that when I was about 8-9 y.o. I then drifted comfortably off to sleep secure in the knowledge that everything was OK in the world...

I've had the same affection for distant railroad noises ever since...

"roar of the crowd when arbroath scores"

You are joking, aren't you? Arbroath has never scored against a team that attracts a crowd, have they?

Although, to be fair, as the judge said "For letting in 36 goals for Bon Accord against Arbroath there can be no punishment too severe.." but they were a cricket team (See-Blether?) so a score like that might have been not so disheartening.

I could go a tartan special right now - where is the Tartan Pimpernel?

You're mostly right...but I always looked forward to Partick Thistle's trip......great bunch of fans they have....

missed Cardiff on six nations international weekend when they play the English.

Cheltenham on gold cup day.

Camden town for almost everything about the place and my local on top of Harrow on the hill, standing in a lovely warm pub on a winters day sipping a pint of Fullers ESB.

Partick always took a big crowd to Meadowbank; much bigger than Meadowbank ever did. I used to laugh about having - I don't know, maybe a thousand fans shouting "THISTLE!" The Bankies never had such support! I'm sure the players couldn't see the thin black line in the supporters' scarves...

If you can get a thousand Thais to shout "THISTLE" I'll be very impressed.

You finally got to me at "the silence at night!" A few months back we were camped out in the middle of the jungle, rain coming down, not a soul for miles...but..... some hilltriber had a Karoke Bar a'blarin.

Its a decent bakers I miss most in fact. The kind who make bread that lasts 12 hours rather than a week and a half.

Easy enough to make that. Excellent bread is a bit trickier I've found.

I went round the new Gourmand Market, near Sukhumvit 28 and Rama IV, but I couldn't see any haggis; I suppose I should've gone round the store anti-clockwise...

SC

I was really trying to scavenge some lunch, but my favourites (8-Noodles in Tesco - closed temporarily for some explained reason) - the little food court on the way to Soi 28 - replaced with fancy developments, and the food court in Soi 35 near the Bull's Head (now Royal Oak - not my Royal Oak, a different Royal Oak - probably a slightly pricier, but busier, Royal Oak) was now a construction site. Bangkok certainly seems to be prospering! So I went up to Soi 7 for my lunch. I've never been one for trying something new...

A second hand bread machine that was carted over by my faither does it for me . I mix whole grain flour with common cardboard paste flour for my loafs . I also add grains from the garden to the mix . I sometimes make a loaf for my old German pal ( who can remember Hitler on the radio and zieg hails after a pint ) who says , ya it's ok for toast makein der morgen wit caffae trinkin .

At this time of the year I sometimes have a desire to go back (UK), put on a set of waterproofs and walking boots and take a canalside walk in the cold drizzling rain.

I may have to return there for a year or so to wrap up some financial affairs and possibly aid my daughter in matriculating to the U Dub. I can't say I'm looking forward to it in the least, except for maybe some of the seafood. I'll spare a thought for you as I'm tucking in to the Dungeness crab stuffed mushrooms at Lattitude 47 though.
