Talking to someone who said that TOT are handing out wireless modems to people getting the internet put on.

Anyone had it installed recently?

I'll go in Monday and see if they will change my old hard wired one over. (Time I paid the bill anyway B) ).

Posted

Don’t know about the modems but TOT does seem to be having problems with their billing. Our bill came late and their online bill paying service is down. More evidence of the flood I suppose.

They never seem to bother though, once this year it never came at all when I was away and when they just billed me double on the next one.

That was before the wet stuff too.

There is a promotion going around but it is a wireless link giving supposedly 7Mb and if you are in the right place the installation will cost 3,390 baht, a dual port modem 390 baht or a wireless modem for 890 baht.

My next door neighbour got one and for the first few days the speed (at the right time of day was great), however it has tailed off lately and has been down completely since Tuesday.

I have been sharing it and it is better than EDGE but not as reliable so far.

It is on their website www.tothispeed.com/th/ should you wish to look but it is all in Thai.

Not sure if you get a free modem but I replaced mine (hardwire) with a TOT wifi, using G band (1200bht) and works great so far. A stand alone wifi of the same caliber is around 4000. Mind you, this wifi will only work with TOT and as far as I know, they are the only ADSL available. Have the rest of the family using it on the property, no issues. I have the old one TOT told me to keep but I think TOT would have to program it for a new user IP. Your welcome to try it.

If they are giving them out, make sure it handles G band as speed is at issue

I'm sure they're not free but some people seem to be getting them with a new set up.

Once again, only hearsay.

The reason I want it is that I'm not very good at networking and I want to run a portable laptop off the same modem without dragging cords around.

I had a land line installed in september, and a wireless modem came as part of the package. It is supposed to give 7mb. Cost around Baht 3500 or so.

I have yet to try it out, it was installed two days after I returned to the UK, and best beloved claims that "I am farmer, cannot do technology."

If I burst onto the internet at scorching speed in the new year you will know that it works. Am I being wildly optimistic? Perhaps....

I bought my own at Power Buy..it is a TP Link model W8901G which i noticed when i was in TOT office is what they displayed.

Mine cost 1600 baht which as i recall was quite a bit cheaper than buying via TOT....and the TOT guy who hooked up my internet just plugged it in asked me to give the wifi a name and a password and he had it going in a few minutes and has worked perfectly ever since. My main compute actually is wired into the modem but it also shoots the wifi signal all over my entire house/yard with excellent connection so i can use my netbook anywhere i like.

I am not sure re speeds etc but it works just fine for me. Good luck

I like that idea Pomchop, keep the main PC hardwired for downloading...

Funny all my stuff had wifi built in but I can't get them to talk to each other.

Hi!

First-the giving away thing-I heard it to,but it is only for new costumers.

I had a phone line, which was terrible-could hardly change from one site to another some times-when I did a speedtest in here I had around 2-3 MG.

Then I got a wireless-the best thing I have ever done-have 6 MG every day-all day long.

Paid 1200 baht-but then I went to KVC, and they install the antenna on the pc-500 baht-paying 590 baht each month for the wireless.

On top of that-one of the young boys in KVC-gave me his card,so if I have eny trouble whit the pc-I just call him.

He gave me a legal windows 7 for free, and are so great-some times he work here 1-2 ours-only asking 1-200 baht-but I pay him a litle extra,as I think he is good, and so fare he have fixed everything-good man to have,if you cant do it by your self.

At one stage I had 3 TOT Internet hook ups. One at my main house, one at the Kangaroo Bar and one in our house in the bush. After closing the Bar we asked to disconnect the bush house and Bar which they did. My main house connection is still running and I didnt get a bill for 2 months so before leaving for Aussie we went in to cancel the main house connection. The guy in there said that they disconnected it with the Bush house and Bar and no internet is going to the main house. I said maybe so as I havent used it and thought it was still going(liar). We have been gone for 4 months and my Son says its still working so I hope they dont catch on and send me a Bill!!!???

Once you get a wifi unit, most wifi today can communicate thro it. I use andriod cell and it talks to my laptop. I just hope they are saying nice things about me?

I doubt it, I get the distinct feeling my laptop sneers at me when I plug it into the TV to play movies I download.

So what if I watch 50s and 60s movies on a 2010/2011 system

I looked at TOT wireless modems when I popped into the main office to pay my bill today. 1495B but I went into a frenzy of indecision and rushed over to Central and looked at options in Power Buy.

Needless to say I came away with SFA.

Next week I'm definitely getting one.

Question. Does it make a difference on wireless modems? If not, I would like to buy a good one here in the US 1st and take it with me in February. Someone said something about having a G band capable one.

I brought one from the usa and woudlnt' work. First of course is the electricity but i knew i could get a converter...but worse the one i brought only accepts a cable like plugs into your TV in usa and my internet here is ADSL which means a phone type plug. So be careful what you buy. They do have a pretty good selection at Power Buy here in CR or of course at Pantip in bkk and only slightly more expensive than Usa but no hassles getting it to work..

It can get into a lot of search look, don't buy/buy, stuff but from what I have found, the speed at which TOT delivers bandwidth is the deciding factor on how much speed a wifi unit can send. You can buy single or dual band, good if you allow a lot of outside users and want a private band for yourself. You can even get crazy and download firmware to supercharge you wifi, again so fast it exceeds what is going in. Range also effects speed, so getting a wifi with good range, like G band may be important. Also sharing could include a printer or drive used on the network. Some where I read you can now buy a wifi unit that allows you to setup your own 3G/4G connections with remote relay boosters around your property, nice if you like to use a smartphone out in the back 40. I'm lazy and don't carry my laptop any farther then around the house or in the car to get it to the airport.

As I said earlier, I bought a TOT G band wifi, which has the modem built in, allows you to hardwire in for security, as I don't suspect anyone is soon going compete with TOT for broadband. It is TOT supported, has all the speed TOT supplies by hardwire, allows all users access to the wireless printer and you can talk dirty to any other wireless devices if you so fancy. A similar unit, with no modem was 4000bht in the new mall but you may find something cheaper.

Scea, playing old movies on a NEW flat screen will hurt it feelings!!! Get with the program!!!!!!!!!!! Shop Burma for your latest DVD's HaHaHa.....

We had a TOT wireless modem installed a few months ago - it was supplied and installed free, so if you haven't already got one I'd call TOT and tell them you want wireless and see what they say, before you rush out to buy. The speed is actually better and more consistent than any wireless I've used in the last few years in Europe, and I'm sure would handle movie downloads, but as you say why not hardwire one computer for heavy d/l if you do it a lot. Connecting to other wireless devices like printers is a straightforward end-user task, you don't need to be tech do do it.

I complained about the slowness of my internet connection and while I was down at Chiang Khong today doing vital work road-testing the alleged Mexican restaurant TOT turned up and installed a new wireless modem under the supervision of the virtually computer illiterate Mrs.

She coughed up the 1800B they requested and the download and upload speeds are just under 10 times faster by the ThaiVisa speed test.

The age of miracles is not yet past. ;)

I think 1800 is not bad installed and ready to rock & roll. If I assume we both have the same modem/wifi (TOT) unit, just downloaded a movie, 1gig in about 30 minutes. I have a monitor on the program and it goes from 500 to 650 (have seen 900) Kb/s. This is always dependent on bandwidth. The good news is, if you suffer from the same syndrom as here, furniture likes to move around for the "NEW" look, wifi makes it easier  for that bandit that does it!!!!!

There is only one problem with these new modems. The range. If do Not encrypt it with a password And stop singing around, the whole neighborhood can use the line. It happened to me almost a year ago when my speed was going down like h*ll.

It has a password but I emailed my neighbour last night and he couldn't pick up the signal, he's about 80m away, whereas I can see his quite clearly.

He pays the top rate though.

I have a password and hooked my laptop up to it very easily.

Is your unit a Tenda 300Mbps Wireless N adsl 2+

Should have good range? TOT rate will not effect range.

Was the signal too weak or did he not see it at all?
