My 78 y/o father in Canada has a laptop but he is not computer friendly. I am always trying to talk him through changes over the phone but he doesn't understand.

What is the simplest way I could take over his laptop remotely and maintain it myself for him? I know there is software available to do it and I think there is a way to do it through windows.

We both use Windows 7. I could ask my brother to install software for him to get started. Suggestions please........

I've been using Logmein for a while now and it works very well. The problem with tightvnc, which btw I do use internally, is firewalls and dynamic IPs. Don't need to worry about them or else you need to contact the remote user and ask them what their current IP is if using VNC.

You can download the demo version which is full featured and after 30 days it reverts to remote access only and no charges (free) at that level. Very easy to use.

+1 for team viewer

I spent 3 hours yesterday logged on to my mothers computer rearranging her photos and tidying things up.

Reliable, easy and she can watch exactly what is happening. We chatted aout what I was doing using Skype (It has its own built in chat but Skype was easier).

Team viewer is also Cross platform as I am using Ubuntu she is on XP

RRTeam Viewer is alsoo Free. If you create an acccoiunt and set the remiote end up properly the other user does not even have to give you any connnection infomration or passwords

Guys, I have been doing Remote Access for years, and yes, teamviewer is probably the easyest, but what they do is let you use free, but when you connect to a few PC's it starts dropping out all the time.

So what I see is happening is it's free for personal use, and how they monitor that is how many PC's you connect o over time.. so, if you connect to the same pc all the time then fine. There is also showmypc and mikogo,

hope that helps and good luck..

Use Teamviewer, its great, free, and even I can use it

Iv tried them all and teamviewer is the one... make sure you setup unattended access/starts with windows and the service is running otherwise when you reboot the machine it will create a new password
