Gonna Annoy Some Bangkok Teachers Now

My MIL is a Government Teacher, during the floods the school was affected but her place was nice and dry, anyhow today whilst shopping together with my wife, she mentioned that she had just received 10,500baht from the Government because of the floods. Apparently this payment is only being made to Government Teachers, but am sure those foreigners employed by Government schools do not know about it

If your house is flooded, 10,500 THB won't help much, the damage is probably much much higher.

But if you are not suffering in any way from flooding these 10,500 THB make sure you vote again for this government. Disgusting. :bah:

Even flood relief is used for political propaganda.

Foreign teachers earn much more (sometimes double or even triple) than the average Thai teacher so this Baht 10,500 doesn't / shouldn't really make much difference to a foreign teacher.

When governments hand out money you can be sure some will get it that don't deserve it and others who deserve it will miss out. That's the nature of government grants.

I used to allocate government funds in Australia as part of my job. We were as careful as we could be to disburse money fairly and effectively, but I'm sure we didn't get it right all the time.

Maybe in the present case the process of evaluating who was worthy and who wasn't was just too cumbersome, so small grants were doled out to all and sundry. It sounds bizarre, but populism's the name of the game, so I guess the government feels that giving something to everyone is a good vote-winner.

If you believe that, you should be a foreign teacher. We don't get intrest free loans, free housing or allowances, I could go on and on. Figuring all the "PERKS" Thai teachers get over Foreign teachers more than makes up for the difference in pay. You should get your head out of the sand or somewhere else.

Don't know where you get your info from, my MIL earns over 40,000 per month, from her salary the government take money and put in various saving schemes for her, so from the 38,000 she should get in her hand she gets around 18,000per month to take home. 2 years ago she received a dividend of 400,000 from the Government, and is expecting another big payout soon.

Are you able to determine the reason for the payment? Is it some form of additional salary compensation? Is it compensation for personal property damages? Is it some sort of compensation for pain and suffering? Did everyone (of her Thai colleagues) get the same amount? Did she have to make a claim? Was any tax withheld?

Obviously more detail might allow people to understand the circumstances regarding this compensation. Off the top of my head I'd say that maybe this is for having to work extra days to cover the lost time in the second semester, but that's just a WAG.

Foreign teachers in Government schools presumably have different contracts which would cover monthly salary, term and any bonuses.

Actually, my employer already made me aware of it several weeks ago, and it is available to us, so OP is mistaken. Depending on contract, legality/route of employment, others' mileage may vary.

I am more glad that I don't need it than that it is available. I am sure whatever the aid is, it will not be enough for most people who need it badly.

It would appear the "head" should be on the other foot. Either you have choosen to teach in Thailand on a low salary because you are dedicated (if this is the case congratulations) OR you have reached your "use by date" OR have found out that drinking and teaching are not accepted in the big paying western countries OR you are a "P" - fancy begrudging a Thai Teacher receiving a small handout - You heap big FARANG with your superior Degree I for one would be interested to hear why you have chosen or been forced to Teach here in a Third World Country.

Let the Thai teacher enjoy her little handout from my experience the government susidies do not compensate for the hours nor the menial tasks some of these very dedicated people have to endure.

If I were a betting man I would take odds on that you do not fit into category (1)(here because it is seen as a worthy purpose) No the betting is warming towards the latter categories - summarised under serial whinger - please prove me wrong and I will put my foot into my Gob.

Actually this would be a good POll once again I think the results would show no sympathy for your whinge but overwhelming support for the Thai Teacher it's people like you with these whinging comments that make the saying "No one makes you stay here" such a popular saying.

IJUSTWANNATEACH have not spoken with you for several years now (away in Oz a little ill all well now) but that aside it is good to hear your thoughts which as usual make very good sense and show compassion from a well respected Teacher of which there are many thank goodness. :jap:

Sorry for taking up more space but I think this needs to be said it helps put my earlier comments into perspective.

I posted you sound like a serial whinger I would take this opportunity to reinforce that statement on browsing through your posts the only "happy" one related to "payday"

What business is it of mine normally NONE but you decried the Thai Teacher getting a small subsidy and went on to say Foreign Teachers do not get these "perks" - this made my ears prick up and the following post (yours of course) says it all.

From ralphlsasserDo they have to jump through the legal hoops as falangs do? Do they have to have 800,000 to renew their visa? Can we say, "double standard?" Thailand knows falangs are a :cash cow" and take full advantage of it.

You are not only a serial whinger but also a dyed in the wool hipocrit.

I highlight 800000 it says it all you are illegal as they come How dare you critisize legal Teacher. :realangry::annoyed::angry:

No mate not a teacher but I do believe the OP to be a hypocrite and when he critized the young Thai teacher for receiving a small subsidy - he was or is out of order.

I can't be bothered going to edit all the previous posts; in future can we please:

1. Post in standard font, colour and size.

2. Not make mountains out of molehills with spelling and/or grammar errors.

Thank-you.
